QFF points worth 4c each? Tell them they're dreaming.

Using Mel/Syd as a yardstick (QF's busiest route), a discount economy internet-booked QF fare is worth about $100 including taxes. Using QFF, the same route will cost 11,000 miles including taxes.

So for the Woolworths 'mum & dad' shopper, a Qantas mile is worth about 0.9 cents - let's be generous and call that 1c - NOT 4c!

So this 500 QFF miles giveaway will cost each supermarket about $5/week. Less than the shrinkage on a couple of 2 litre cartons of milk each week!

WW is exposed to peanuts over this one. Pretty cynical really. Glad I'm a WW shareholder and I'm looking forward to increased turnover courtesy of the ER punters during the promotional period. Methinks the share price will go up by at least a few cents and the value of my WW shareholding will rise by far more than 4 weeks x $5 = $20 over the promotional period.

The points are valued at 4c because:
Fly from Mel/Syd. Cost: $100. Points earned: 1,000
Fly 11 times. Cost $1,100. Points earned: 11,000

1/11th of 100 is 9.09c/point when points are earned exclusively from flights.

Now, take a standard redemption gift card:
$100 Woolworths Gift Card is 14,500 points
Fly 14.5 times. Cost $1,450. Points earned 14,500

2/29ths of 100 is 6.9c/points when earned exclusively from that route.

As you can see, both options are significantly higher than their 4c valuation. I assume there is some kind of advanced calculation involved in their valuation that involves how much each point is worth through each of their different methods of earning: direct earn credit, flights, shopping, etc. As well as how many points are earned in each way. Then they would equate that to how many points are redeemed in each different way: flights, gift cards, etc. and that would give them some kind of average figure.

4c is a fine valuation of the points using this interpretation?

A point is "worth" what you can get for it and not what it cost you to aquire it.

Whata point is worth will depend on how it is redeemed. This will vary, but say generally:

* Maybe a cent or less for gift card.
* Less than a cent for domestic flight.
* Maybe 2 cents for a long haul international in Y, nearly maybe for a RTW in Y.

* 4 cents in J. More if you can upgrade.

I got a little confused in what I was explaining. The equivalent discount achieved by earning those points in those ways was 9.09% and 6.9%. I also appear to have now realised this is entirely irrelevant to discussing how much each point is worth. ;)

You are pretty close. My local Woolies, St Georges Tce, opened about 4 months ago. For the first few days there was a banner at the front of the store saying 'Congratulations on Store Number 800'

What a great store that is, clean organised and well stocked. Pity they are not all like that.

Really? I thought you were on the right track, but off by a factor of 100.

In the case of the MEL-SYD fare redemption, you'd value the points at 0.91 cents/point and similarly 0.69 cents/point for the Woolworth's's voucher - much below 4 cents/point.

As noted by lovestravellingoz the 'value' of the points varies depending on the redemption and can be up to 4 cents/point for some J redemptions. :)

But yes, giving away 500 points is not exactly a great prize.

Even though I've indirectly calculated how much each point is worth I was meaning to calculate the discount achieved in those situations and was trying to say that the discount was far above the valuation of the points, which it isn't. So the direction I was trying to take my argument was incorrect. It is all well and good, though, that redeeming points with an equivalent value of 4c/point can be obtained. ;)

Maybe we should tell them to contact AMEX Marketing department, so they can learn how to entice us to shop there and get some real rewards :p

Well SGTerrace isn't my local, but I go through that store often enough on my way home - because thanks to WA's arcane trading hours everything is closed by the time I get up to Joondalup.

And no, you'll not catch me dead in an IGA.

Received targetted promo today:

Spend $1000 by Xmas and gain 800 bonus points,

or spend $750 and gain 550 points.

Dan Murphy's limited promotion 30/11 - 24/12

From an advertisement in this mornings Age:

This festive season present your registered and linked Everyday Rewards card and earn 1 Qantas Frequent Flyer point per dollar spent over $30 in one transaction on any wine purchase#

#Promotion runs from Monday 30.11.09 until Thursday 24.12.09. To be eligible to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points you must have spent at least $30 on wine purchases in one transaction. Points can only be earned on wine purchases. [...] Offer excludes phone [delivery] orders places with Dan Murphy's call centre.

Perhaps they will notify us this coming week sometime...

No double offer here, but I now have 4 ER cards linked to family members who do no use ER for various reasons.

They are linked to their QFF account which I can of course transfer back to me as required.

So I will use all of these cards in the next few days and then leave them dormant for a while in the hope of a double points offer :)

Thanks to a TV purchase at Big W earlier this week my points total has soared to over 2600 now.

I’d think they would be targeting me for promotions like that, but I wouldn’t spend that much anyway, my parents might.

Looks like Dan’s could well come onboard. That’d be perfect for some little old ladies I know, who seem to go through the scotch quite fast. :)

The Dan's offer in The Age today was:

*for a limited time only (ie no point at all afterwards)

* for wine purchases only....so your little old ladies are going to be unhappy :-|
