Qantas Flight Voucher Promo - earn 10x points [Expired 26DEC11]

You need to know what the fare is and what the +++ are.

My $117 all up cost I mentioned way back in post #70 - was actually $94 with $23 in +++, so a $50 voucher was in order.

Fortunately this is easy to discern before buying the voucher by clicking the all up cost on the review page (a pop-up window with with a brief breakdown will appear).
I've been looking at flying from MEL to SYD in January.

Current O fare is $117 composed of $94 and $23 in [SUB]+[/SUB]+[SUP]+[/SUP]; add $7.70 to that if paying by CC to total $125.

Earn is 1000 QFF points for the flight and 312 points with 2½point/$ card. So 1312 QFF points for trip and $125.

With this same O fare, $50¹ voucher + $67 in [SUB]+[/SUB]+[SUP]+[/SUP] to total $117.

Earn is 1000 QFF points, 500 bonus and 294 points with 2½point/$ card.

So 1794 QFF points for trip and $117 outlay.

¹ Since the base fare is less than $100 and greater than or equal to $50

I'll see how many I get through before Amex either block the repetitive transactions OR call me :shock:

Again I'll give Virgin about a week to hopefully match the offer! But I doubt they will

It seems that the voucher reference becomes your booking reference number, so you would have to do them one at a time.

I suspect Virgin have their own marketing plan, and may not copy the QF plan

Not different prices, just one of the conditions of the voucher is that the fare excluding QF surcharges must be at least the voucher amount. Thus, if your voucher is too high it will skip the lowest fares.

In the situation above, if a $50 voucher had been used there would have been unlikely to be an issue.

I was using a $100 voucher. Thanks for the info, should have went
the $50 voucher then.

Thanks :)

Well let's say about 90 seconds per transaction, not bad for 575 points I guess

WARNING: THIS OFFER IS A RIP-OFF.

I bought 2 x $200 vouchers for use for 2 sectors. Booking the first sector...

Booking on Qantas website
Flexi Saver fare (all fare classes available)
ABX-SYD - cost = $210 + $7.70 cc fee = $217.70

Voucher redemption
Flexi fare same flight (cheapest fare class offered was Flexi Saver)
ABX-SYD - cost = $255 (no cc fee, but $45 more expensive on the fare)

Caveat emptor

For non believers I have taken screen shots.

It still might be a way to "buy" FF points, but it's not a free lunch - 2000 points for $37.30

Hi Michael

See post #101, #95 & #70 for explanation.

The $210 you saw on the general website has a base fare cost (excluding taxes) of less than $200.

Only flights with base fare equal or higher than voucher amount will show up.

Not a rip-off but QF have made it a bit complicated.

They are not a ripoff, but they do contain a trap that is not always immediately obvious. That is the voucher can only be applied to the base fare. In the case of SYD-ABX, the $210 is calculated as a fare of 169.04 and taxes/charges of $40.96. A $200 voucher cannot be applied to this fare, so the booking engine finds a fare that will work.

A $150 voucher would have been able to be applied to the $210 fare.

This has been covered. The $200.00 coupon value might be too high - it exceeds the cheapest $210.00 base fare (the fare minus taxes). If you give me the dates, I'll try the booking using a $50.00 voucher.

I wonder how many they'll snare with the issue as encountered by MichaelD. :-|

D'oh!

Yet another subtlety to account and plan for (despite what I thought was some very careful reading of terms & conditions on my part). Thanks to all who clarified this.

Oh well, off to buy and test out a $150 gift voucher, then.

I wonder if QF really intended to teach folk how to avoid the CC fee

Based on my experiences so far, I'd suggest that people inadvertently booking a more expensive fare bucket would MORE than make up for the loss of the $7.70 credit card fee.

It will work if you purchase a return however, because 2x$169 (base fare) is greater than $200. I did this with a $100 voucher for a return ADL-SYD to get sale fares, which would not happen with a one way.

So I bought 6 x $500 vouchers for a couple of intl trips next year - from what I understand now I'll get 30,000 points plus save the $30 Intl CC fee.

Only boring bit was having to buy them all seperately. And the seperately register them to my FF account.

Amex didn't call to ask about the repeat transactions - suspect it was happening quite a bit yesterday ......

Cheers

So I bought 6 x $500 vouchers for a couple of intl trips next year

Remember - just one coupon is allowed per booking (6 vouchers for 2 trips?). And the trip must be from Australia, so you couldn't use them for one-ways to Australia.

Just a follow-up on this.
I bought a $150 voucher and using this the Voucher Redemption cost = $210 with no cc fee, the same as that available on the website directly.

...so it is indeed a free lunch (with careful planning).

Logic would say that I should therefore buy a fistful of varying $ amount vouchers for next year's travel.

Thanks for confirming this again!

I am going to purchase $7500 in Vouchers now, majority being $50 and $100

Since the Virgin rep ignored my post in the Virgin Australia forum (but decides to rant on about a Darwin lounge) to see if VA were going to match or have a similar offer, I will happily obtain a refund of my VA lounge access purchased a few months ago (as I'll hit Platinum on VA soon anyways) and spend the next 12months + flying Qantas.

Since I'll hit Platinum on Qantas again it also means my international trips in 2012/2013 will go to Qantas

As a rough figure probably about $30k in airfares that would have been spent on VA will now go to Qantas.

Thanks Qantas, it'll nice to be back with an airline with a wide choice of lounges, similar pricing, free food and a true full service mentality!

Does anyone know if you can use a voucher for one person to make a booking for multiple people? I'm planning to look after my commuting needs with $50 vouchers for myself only. But we also have a family trip in 2012, can I use one of my vouchers for the family booking? Or do I need to get a voucher for all of us?
