Qantas Green frequent flyer tier

If I'm following correctly, Green Tier bonuses are now awarded at the start of a new membership year, based on whether you re-qualified in the previous?

Would the following strategy work if you wanted some flexibility on when to redeem your Green Tier award? In odd number years.
  • Year 1 - Qualify for Green Tier, receive bonus choice at time of qualification.
  • Year 2 - Automatically re-qualify, receive bonus choice at start of membership year. Do not complete Green Tier challenges.
  • Year 3 - Green Tier membership lapses. Complete challenges again, receive bonus choice at time of qualification?

The Green Tier is evolving and the rules keep changing. It would be a bold person who set out a multi-year strategy in the face of such uncertainty. Personally, I adopt the same strategy for Green Tier as for card churning and everything else - take what is offer at the time and let the future worry about itself.

Thats nice but because Green Tier bonus is now not awarded in the year you earn it means cant factor in the SCs for requalifying, so now have to fly another 50SCs instead of claiming green tier *sigh*.

I can understand them trying to close loophole of claiming 2 * Green tier awards in the same year, but that has never been the case for me and now means zero green tier awards for over a year.

Green tier has been a pretty botched implmentation.

Just having a browse of this as I achieved the 5 leaves a couple of weeks ago and have not yet been given the choice of reward.

Last year when I qualified I received the option reasonably quickly and I can see the 50SC were credited in August. My FF year ends 31 Jan.

I was counting on the 50SC to be credited this calendar year but from explanations above it seems like I wont get the SCs until after January 2024?

Is that right? If so then I'll no longer bother chasing it.

That seems to be the case - Jan each year for you. But a 50 SC leg up each year is still better than a poke in the eye - once sync’d into the cycle.

Sometimes I'd rather a poke in the eye than deal with QF.
But....maybe this shade of green tier will run more smoothly and predictable from hereon in. Reward option once per 12months etc.

It's when they require proof of residence or the like and cut everybody from claiming Tasi resident, that'll be the end of the green tier.

From my perspective, as a points collecter rather than an SC collector, the end of the road was when they cut the survey are started to require two 3,200 point charity donations. Paying 6,400 points plus $15 or so dollars to get 10,000 points is no longer really worth the effort.

Agree, but the inconsistency and rule changing is cough. Last years received in August then I have to wait 17 months for the next lot. That means I received 0 SCs for Green Tier in this actual membership year.

Yes the requirement for the point donations is not great. I'd rather just donate in cash but that doesnt get excess points off of their books.

Although looking again at T&Cs it says reward should be available within 21 days so will wait and see.

That will be my situation too. Claimed SCs in year 1 and year 2 - but any earning in year 3 wont be given until year 4. I get they want to stop double dipping but they could surely run a report to exclude those people and not everyone from redeeming in the year the benefit is earned.

I now have to fly more segments than planned to keep WP in my next FF year.

Sounds like a win for the team in red and white.

But also a disincentive to bother qualifying in year 3. Since once cant rely on them not changing the rules yet again - why burn points if no guarantee the 50 SCs will materialise.

I only do GT for the 50SCs, i care not for a banner on the web site and dont think the points burn actually does anything to help the env.

You can aim to meet the requirements for Green Tier towards the end of your membership year if you want.

That’s what I’ll do year 2+. Get a cheap carbon flying offset and quiz early on and then wait until June for the rest.
