Yes, well those who book and pay for the seats earlier should get first choice! No one's forcing you to take an upgrade.

So you dont think a passenger who upgrades using points is worth or as valuable as a passenger paying for their seat?

You are correct but they already have and continue to have the opportunity to select those seats, im not taking that opportunity away from them.
Whereas when everyone else gets their upgrades confirmed, i.e WP then there isn't much benefit of being WP1 then is there?

We recently had a great experience with Qantas. On the way from Melbourne to LHR, partner and I were both booked business class on Q via Dubai. That was great in itself. But, boarding from the First Class Lounge in in Dubai I was upgraded to F. Partner was not so happy with that but I took it. I had to agree that if by some rare chance I got upgraded on the way back after Christmas I would let partner have the upgrade!

So, on the way back we were both in Business LHR to DXB but we reboarded separately in DXB as I was looking around. When I went to board (partner had already boarded) I got upgraded again to MEL fully realising that I would have to give that up. I went to seat 5A just to see what I was missing and whoaaaaa there is partner sitting in the middle seat.... so WE HAD BOTH GOT UPGRADED!!!!!.

Thanks so much Qantas. Partner has now at last travelled First Class once so I am off the hook so to speak.

That's how good being P1 has been for me!!!!

Ironically by the time they get to it, the return flight will be well within the 7 day mark as well!!

Start a book, here is my bet: I'm thinking that they will come through at T-48 and all the good seats will be taken, and ill get the centre seat in the middle row of 3 downstairs.

Its tomorrow on QF107. Ive rang them twice during the week and they said "They will look into it". The return flight next week is now also well within the 7 days and it has also been showing J9 for ever.
I really don't want to ring the P1 line on the weekend as its not urgent and they did say they would "look after it" so ill find out what that means. T-24 is in a few hours so ill see what the story is then.

To be honest the whole thing leaves the priority upgrade benefit feel a bit lame.

No need to feel upset, I have a good seat in W. As always you should expect to travel in the class you booked. Anything more is always a bonus.
(Ive got about 3 of these nested W flights to/from the US, so im bound to get more of this sort of thing)

Its more why promise something that you don't/cant deliver on.

I should have added that in no way we (status pax) should feel entitled to 'demand' something not on the contracted ticket.

It's more along the line of 'Please Sir, I wish to be smiled upon'.

Reading this brings some caution (reality check) to my points upgrade request (as a WP) on QF1 in a month or two.

If a P1 could have this much angst, then it is really a lottery.

Is this an ex-USA booking?
I have a sneaking suspicion based on a couple of mine rejected and in one case a gate upgrade that POS as well as class of fare has some factor here.

That's interesting, yes it is - I use nested Y+ (booked in T class) for my trips stateside (saves me a bundle).
Very interesting indeed, I wonder why the difference?
