Qantas Platinum One experiences?

Mate, I am sure one of us (ie me) would be more than happy to send them to you (though I shudder at the postage !!!) there are plenty to go around!!!

How much DID it cost to return to QF? I also think there's a message there to them. I was considering a polite email but I thought that it would sound sour and ungrateful and I wouldn't even know where to send it (as in P1 team? QFF general?)....

re the "choice" of wine or books.. I wonder if it s to do with interests in QFF profile? I looked yesterday and noticed (damn!) I did not have food/wine selected.... I'm not saying that was the clincher, but who knows...

To buy on the QF store it's $155 + $37 postage, so not too bad. But i don't want the books that bad, haha.

Just looked at my profile & yep sure enough i do have food & wine ticked.

It's times like this I feel sorry for Qantas, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

They've given you a gift, feel free to regift it or even say thank you but please don't whinge that you've been given something.

(And yes I have been the beneficiary of Qantas' generosity including wine from FAs and have always thanked them and been grateful. I'm a teetotaller but appreciate the thought behind the gift.)

Just did a calc on auspost website from Melbourne to Perth and it would be $27.70. That's actually less than I thought.... unless I did it wrong or they missed a zero :)

of course you're right.. and that's why I didn't send an email. Whatever the reasons are yes it's nice to be acknowledged for sure. We all have our preferences.

To think potentially hundreds, or more, of the boox sets may have gone out.. that's a huge cost for QF....

Some like wine, others like books so how about let the members choose their gift?
P1 team can send an email to all members (there are not that many anyway) with the option to select the annual gift and make everyone happy :)

Well, they could send it to all the P1's (and other selected members - we're assuming it's only P1's.. presume CL get goodies too - probably better ones :) and other VIP's or CIP's).... and ask but that kind of ruins the surprise of an unexpected gift, which maybe they were aiming for?

Sure, I would have liked an option, but then again perhaps they had limited quantities of items.. let's say they had 50 sets of books and 50 sets of wines and 100 members... and 90 want wine..... yeah, that is perhaps worse to offer something then potentially disappoint them. I have no idea if this is even close to reality in terms of the situation just a thought.

As others have said you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I received some wine upon attaining P1 status, and I am a wine person, with around 500 bottles at home at any given time.

I honestly can't remember what the wine was (although I could probably look it up), and I'm not sure if I've even consumed it yet.

The books I won't forget in a hurry, though.

I don't think I've verbalised disappointment at a gift since my mother put me in my place at age seven or so.

Unless the gift is somehow offensive, sending a gift back to the giver - to make some childish point - is just bad manners.

There are clearly some P1s whom QF would be better without.

It's a Christmas gift. The spirit of Christmas is about being grateful and humble.
I'm thankful that Qantas even thought of me, let alone sent some neat books.

All that sending the books back has done has probably got some added remarks in his profile and a reminder to not bother with gifts again.

P1 is a relationship, and the relationship I've built up with the P1 team (just like others here) has benefitted me greatly, they have gotten me out of a pickle many times and I'm thankful for it.

Like all things in life you get out what you put in, effort to nurture and grow any relationship has amazing long term rewards.

Thank you, ReLoad. You took my thoughts and expressed them better than I would have. :)

Just to take this away from the "Book saga" - it's interesting to see the variety of gifts that come out from time to time.. or offers. eg Les Mis tickets. I wonder how they select whom to offer such nice things to (as in based on a spend factor, flying days, total loyalty, random...) and then how they decide who might be offered wine, or a sports ticket, or Les Mis etc.

for me, apart from the books. I was offered the flight sim when I first got P1 18 months ago (I had to turn it down) then a film preview for "Planes" when that was out (but I was ironically flying to BNE that day) and that's it. I'm NOT complaining. I see this as all well and truly aside and above the flying experience and perks which is the core airline business and what we are loyal FOR. There does seem to be a wide variety of offerings that do go on. I certainly don't expect to get stuff though reading this thread has, in some ways, been an eye opener to the sorts of items they do offer.

And here's the thing, I'm pretty sure the "equivalent" levels in the USA (eg: United GS, AA Concierge Key, etc) don't do this kind of thing as a rule (though I could be wrong) so we're pretty lucky all things considered.

My relationship with the P1 team is almost nil.. and that's great! Why? Because I haven't *needed* them. All mY QF (or even OW travel, where I may in theory have potential reason to call them to at least ask for assistance) has been smooth without incident. One cxl a year ago handled by the lounge staff and premium res proactively and I've made one call to the P1 team on behalf of a friend in a pickle who then passed me through to res who were very good in helping this (non elite) person out with some fee waivers and the like - and that was GREATLY appreciated since I certainly didn't expect that much but it seemed worth a shot. Other than that I've had no need to call or email them. I actually consider that a really GOOD thing - it shows, for my needs anyway, QF is doing the job I'm paying them to do.

just my 2 cents and a general thought rather than a direct response to ReLoad.

I'd be interested to know why some P1s receive offerings, gifts, upgrades, and others do not. Is it linked to spend, SCs, time in program, or random? I've been P1 since end May 14, currently sitting on 3285 SCs (2120 on QF metal), and will remake P1 next year with room to spare. No sign of any love from QF as a P1, other than an upgrade SYD-MEL a couple of months ago. No shadow. Nada. Rarely an acknowledgement from CSM. For those that have received books, wine, etc in this Christmas period, how many SCs do you have?

Ahhhhhhh Qantas its greatest consistency is its inconsistency.

Lets just say I am no where near making P1 this year and that is more through design than anything else.

It seems at QF that even with in the top tiers there are levels of service and attention however have no idea as to how they decide who they should love and who they should just be polite to.

I am amazed however that you have received no Xmas Present as of yet.

Happy flying and a great xmas.

For the record I am only about a 35% chance to re-make P1 for a 3rd year; I'll have reached ~1700SC 6 months in, but next year will see a slight shift in some trips and carriers, so I probably won't make it short of a double SC promo (and I hadn't had one since making P1, which makes perfect commercial sense), and I don't have any planned major QF/OW(noting the massive SC reduction there anyway) flying planned for the next 6 so it may be I won't get even to the 2400 level. C'est la vie.

It's worth noting that I certainly do not expect anything in this regard, and can (and do) buy myself books, wine as needed. It is, however, interesting that there is such a range of experiences. Am I on a "bad" list?? I've been LTG, then WP for several years. Travel exclusively on Qantas when it is available on a route. Never flown Virgin. Most runs are to US in Y+ or J. Love the F lounge at SYD. But starting to question my loyalty (member since 94), and considering, as others have, if P1 is worth it, and if I should do the next few US trips with Virgin to build status there.

Here's a thought on this issue, and I have absolutely NO inside knowledge on this, but what if in pure marketing/revenue terms, you are seen as a almost certainty.. as in long term loyalty, unlikely to shift, so revenue is assured (from QF's point of view0 thus the effort/spend they need to make to keep you is less than someone new they're trying to get. I'm not a marketing person but I understand a cor concept with loyalty is that winning new customers is X times more expensive than retaining loyal ones.

The interesting thing is if you (or indeed I, as it looks like may happen with me, not for deliberate reasons but the way things may work out) show a lower booking (forward or used) level, or stop for a bit (possibly moving to another carrier) then they may pop up and take note and throw something out there "hey, remember us?" kind of thing. Or not.

It may also be that whatever metrics used to "value" a customer's worth to the company just don't reach certain thresholds. note *I* am not trying to say someone just doesn't matter that much ("he's just not that into you!") but in this kind of world when QF's objective is to capture, maintain and hopefully raise ("It's about me, not you") then it may be seen a regular spender that has a known pattern is perhaps not as high on the radar.

I'd also suspect where there are pax that represent >5000 SC's, or 7000 or whatever in a year.. that's serious revenue. Serious spend. Scary. I'd love to know the top SC earners at QF - or rather how much, not who... I bet the mind would be boggled.

It could also come down to matching routes flown, partners, matched to competition (eg: if you're flying to LAX mostly and the competition is UA and VA that's not like you have the choice to throw serious revenue at a SQ to fly to europe on).

All I know is that in big businesses like this that invest heavily in loyalty and revenue like this, it's not as simple as reaching a certain set goal no matter what is published - I'm sure of it. Mix of fares purchased (paid F? paid Biz? mostly sale vs. flex fares?) etc can all come into the mix.

Me.. I think I made P1 with 3700ish one year and 3950 another. Sure, over the line but not by much. I'm not the droid they REALLY are looking for with the paid full-J and F fares (IMHO). I mostly buy I's and D's or fly on OW partners (before the devalue) and stuff like that, plus domestic trips. I am sure they model all this stuff internally and assign each customer a certain "value" score based on this kind of data.. and then make decisions based on that.

again, I have no real idea what QF does.. just some random thoughts.

and hey I'm cool.. win or no wine, books or no... the fact that I've been well looked after in the air, which is what I pay QF for, my J->F upgrades have ALL gone through when most wanted and so on.. that's why i value the status. Extras are just that.. nice (and unusual) unexpected surprises. I'm not hanging out for an invite to Boxing Day test or a jumpseat on the 763 or something. :)
