Just booked MEL-KUL return with 2 nights on arrival at Hilton KL for Jnr#2 & friend. All in R$2,441 which is ~ $1,150.

Twin room at Hilton KL is currently $188 pn on HH site or $128 pn via Ex br. That puts the return airfare at ~ $319 each.

Flights without hotel were R$2,121 or $500 AUD each so 2 nights at Hilton = AUD $75 ($37.50 pn).

Checked the booking in QFF account and all looks good. Was able to select seats at no charge (Emirates metal).

make sure you go to the Emirates website and select the seats directly - ive found twice now that if i only rely on the qantas site at T80, it doesn't stick.

Can I ask what dates you got KL for at that price?

Feb 28 to Mar 14.

Thanks robd have some friends thinking of going around that time will let them know and see if they can get as good a deal.

Cheers

The seat allocation is showing correctly on Emirates website. Do I need to change seats and then move back to get them to stick?

Some feedback on .br booking.

It worked and there were no nasty surprises other than ending up on Emirates joint QF flight. I had trouble with language, but a second open tab on google translate got me through. Another hiccup on credit card, but got over this too. Conversion rate 2.1, so I saved $240. QF wins a 5 year drought & (2 years with JQ).
I also warn google translate will turn local currency to aussie currency - perhaps a deliberate bug - that may scare 99% of people off On your CC , you will get the local price. I cannot explain how BAD it is for Airlines to loose a customer, because the tricky deals are too tricky.expedia.uk and other expedias were cheaper, br seemed cheapest. Prices went up a lot on weekends, so I went weekday on a redeye arrival. They should send a custom deal 'same time, same place, same price+ offer out' if they need to fill seats - but the airlines are all too dumb to twig on. You get a QF booking number, so you go to the QF site, login and add your details. All done.
Loosers: Well SQ to HK missed out. Air Asia missed out, so did Flyscoot. And the .br was cheaper than Jetstar too.
I also noticed Scoot and Air Asia ramping up prices in low season and on weekends, and luggage fees hikes. Their mistake was being too close to 'full service' airlines. Scoot can also blame Snowden for lost sales, as I will never touch facebook, ever.
And if QF was wishing for a more $$, I was sorely tempted by a Chinese airline at around $800 all in.

However the xmas deals were too elusive for me this year, so I will stay at home, and go low season. Hats off to EK for going for market share. Maybe my next trip will be QF. I am happy to book a year ahead.

I have made changes to one of these fares before and had to pay the Qantas $100 change fee plus the fare difference, no charges from Expedia, also got lucky in that I got an agent who could speak fluent English first up.

So going on from that, I have another fare which is Q class, is there anyway I can find out the fare rules? I am looking to cancel or change it and can't seem to find the fare rules through Expedia.

Thanks for the help.

TIL.

I have been keeping half an eye on this thread........so half a question...... does this work one way or is it just as expensive (looking Brisbane to Singapore)
TIA

I am eager to know as well. I suspect not from most occasions ive played around with Expedia, but would be keen to know if anyone has booked a one way at half the cost of return.

Use matrix.itasoftware.com to find itinerary with the same class and see the fare rule there. Alternatively check the fare rule with expertflyer.

The reality is that one-ways are generally more expensive than discount return fares for the same O/Ds.

Moreover, the saving to be made with .br relates to the lack of fuel fines - wich for one-ways are by definition half as much as on return. i.e. A one way is missing at least one fuel fine- a return is missing a minimum of two.

I got quite a reasonable one way fare from BKK-SYD (via HKK) in Jan on .br and it was a lot cheaper than elsewhere. I can't remember the exact pricing as it was a few months ago but I was very impressed by the price difference.

This may or may not be related but I came across this the other day:

Fuel Surcharges on Aeroplan Award Tickets - Canadian Kilometers - Canadian Kilometers

The other interesting thing to keep in mind is if your destinations aren’t fixed, cities/countries that regulate fuel surcharge, that means those cities will be cheaper. The most obvious example is flights departing GRU which have no YQ at all, because the Brazilian government prevents excess fees on top of the base fare.

I am sure it has been mentioned but premium economy or business class is not available with Flights + Hotel?

Correct. It really doesn't work, same with trips longer than a month or so (with a hotel).
