Conversely someone like me who find out that people who never pay for premium cabins are getting easier access to points upgrades than I am would be pretty pissed off. I am dropping cash in QF's pocket and not getting a benefit.

Or conversely those who feel that they are constantly dropping cash in Qf's pocket to pay for seats in the premium cabins, but when they occasionally try the trick of traveling in Y and attempt to get a points upgrade they get bupkes. Even though there are spare premium seats on the flight QF won't give them the benefit.

Differing perceptions I guess.

I book F, J, PE & whY, depending on the length of the trip or what I can afford at the time.

I don't understand why any airline would not allow a forward cabin to fill with "the cost of points" at the eleventh hour. As a WP, I don't see any difference if I'm beaten to the post by someone that pays cash or with points - it's a free market & if it was critical to me - I would have already secured the seat.

If this type of system was introduced and as a result saw a reduction of bookings for premium cabins - well, they could always cancel it. It wouldn't be the first time that QF changed arrangements.

I also understand that there is a catering issue at remote ports but that should not be a problem at any home port.

Me 3. Slightly disappointed. Meh! EF is showing J2 and Y9 down to about L2. 4D with shadow is good.
No upgrade for me either on tomorrow's BNE-SYD flight. Can' see loadings so cannot comment if there are any business class seats available.

I still believe this is another of those wonderful Qantas public relations announcements where they simply do not deliver or never had the intention to deliver.

They delivered for me last week on a 767 and I have the same flight next week. But not tonight. As best I could count while waiting to disembark there were 9 pax in the J cabin of the 737 tonight. Y was not very full.

If you want I'm happy to check your flight loadings.

Had a couple of new cabin crew tonight as well. That was entertaining. Oxygen mask flaying around, life jacket wearing needed more practice. Funny.

I might have started the 'free wine' bit of the thread, so sorry if this caused any cafuffel (no idea how to spell that!) I was offered this (epicure inc free wine) based on the 'may' have been affected. I wasn't affected, I had bookings for the wednesday afterwards, but usually fly on a Monday or tuesday, so maybe that was an input. I didn't bother canceling because a) I wasn't paying and b) I thought it would be sorted due to the concise and controversial grounding  . I haven't received any gift yet, but have received bonus points.

BTW, haven't had a free upgrade yet, but hoping :D for an upgrade next week, when I'm on 767s instead of 737s. 737s have been rammed BNE to SYD & vv lately, so not expecting anything, especially when you can't even buy a seat!

I am on QF557 at 19:25. I'd be curious as to what the loadings look like.

Looks pretty full J7, Y4 all else is zero - QF557 2/12. Also showing a 73H is operating aircraft. That's not like you.

It's kerfuffle ;).

Would have been a crack up on Youtube.

It was a city flyer dinner flight, got given a meal and the FA then had to ask if we get given a drink. Definitely, new FAs, very much fish out of water. It was great to experience, good on 'em.

You know what they say: those things don't deliver oxygen at all - they are just there to muffle the screams!

Or those things hanging in front of you are to get away the stink from the bloody tuna rolls we are about to serve and served on the previous flight!

I can't even get into Row 23 for my SYD-BNE flight on Monday morning, which is unusual.
Seems to be in reverse at the moment (though I did get 2 op-ups recently, so I can't complain - but I think they were before this current "promotion")

The ability to frequently upgrade using points (or for free) reduces the incentive for some people to pay for premium seats.
Until you run out of points!! By which point QF will have reduced their significant points liability and can freely sell premium seats in the open market.

I have already seen a member in another thread complain that all he wanted to do is date change his award travel despite no award availability for his new dates. I would not be surprised if sooner rather than later, someone challenges Qantas in the courts regarding their accumulated points that they are unable to use.

But that is the same as paying cash for a flight and not being able to change it due to availability.

And that thread is out of context, he is wanting to change flights around Xmas which is always hard to impossible at the best of times!

Qantas can point to plenty I ways to burn points so I doubt it would end up in court.

No choice when the 6-7 flights prior to this one are priced $50+ that the current flight. Not going to spend that much extra for the 767 over the 737.

And I am also stuck in 4A as I could not get into 4CD at any stage. Row 5 back was always available. Had the middle seat vacant on off over the last 24 hours so would be interested to see what happens.

By the way has anyone actually had one of these so-called op-ups during peak travel times that were not due to full loads?

No - and not had great experiences SYD-MEL-SYD today/yesterday - difference between row 4 and 5 is huge - hadn't realised before. First time I have had two 73x flights in two days for a while - PA will be advised to book a 763 in future.
