Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

2 x discount J to F on the SIN-LHR leg of QF1 on 27 Dec, which came through in the middle of the night before (always a good text to be woken by!). We are both WP. No luck for the same leg on QF2 on 12 Jan, even though there were 2 seats showing on Expert Flyer and the request had been made at the time of booking, whereas the successful QF1 request was lodged only a few weeks before travel.

QF2 SIN-SYD 12/1 J to F - no success. Had zero to low hopes anyway with availability showing F1 in the days prior

Need to make sure that the flight is at least ticketed before putting an upgrade request in or it gets stuck in the queue. Putting in the upgrade request before getting an e-ticket PDF email is a guaranteed way to miss out on an upgrade.

SYD - LAX J to F on 19/1 confirmed. Question to the folks here - I have a middle row seat (which is perfectly fine in F) but Expert Flyer is showing 5A available (blocked on the Qantas seat map presumably since it’s marked as a “baby” seat). Should I try and move into that if it opens up? It seems pretty close to the galley…

There's really no bad F seat. Galley has never been an issue for me.

Travelling solo, I'd take any A seat over the rest.

QF60 (HND - SYD) from flex economy to business as SG. Rejected at T-9h. I was also rejected at the boarding gate, which gave me an angry beep and I was directed to report to the counter pending an upgrade due to some failed to board passengers. Upgraded to J with two others - our lucky day! Miracles can happen. Safe and happy travels everyone!

Failed to upgrade on QF8 DFW-SYD last Friday as a WP.. long 16 hours in Y, but at least I had a bulkhead aisle so could stretch out.

Look like the same flight was cancelled the day before which explains why there wasn’t an empty seat in any cabin.

Could have been worse. My colleague on QF8 DFW-MEL made it to the gate before boarding but they had given his seat away as they didn’t think he would make it when the connecting flight landed late. He ended up having to fly DFW-AKL-MEL arriving 11 hours late

Successful upgrade of 4 Y savers to J on 10 Jan Syd to HNL at T-28 as WP. Was a nice surprise!!! Got some sleep and hit the beach on arrival. Great start to the holiday. Didn’t really make use of the food and drink on board as really overindulged in the First lounge beforehand. That’s the life!

Unsuccessful upgrade on way back yesterday (18 Jan HNL date). Didn’t find out until T-10 which was rather late. Annoyingly, the text said I was unsuccessful for a business upgrade at this time but no mention of my default upgrade request for Y+ if unsuccessful in J. I gave Qantas a call to ask what was happening to the Y+ request - they said it was still pending. I asked when I would find out given flight was 5 hours away. They said should hear before flight. I never did hear back.

At the service desk check in, I asked about what was happening to my Y+ request. They said they (airport ground staff) finalise any remaining requests but I wasn’t on the list for Y+ request. They explained because I got rejected for J, it automatically canceled (rejected) my Y+ request. Is this right? It doesn’t make sense because what is the point of ticking the default upgrade option for Y+ in the online upgrade request function if it gets canceled out if unsuccessful for J? I expected to formally hear back on the Y+ request. Anyway, nothing I or they could do and they couldn’t explain the discrepancy of Qantas telling me it was still pending!

The bright side was the service was fantastic in Y yesterday. Really lovely crew, prompt and responsive (overseen by the fabulous supervisor Toby). The best ever. Not like the J stewardess who told me to make my own bed and seemed annoyed when I asked for another water bottle.

Posting late but we were unsuccessful with 2x J -> F requests on QF2 (LHR-SIN) on Jan 12.

Pretty disappointing as there was still 3x F seats showing available hours after we got the rejection SMS and our request came from a P1 account. Oh well, that's the game!

My daughter SG plus companion, QF1 SIN-LHR 13/1 Y to J - no success. But at T-12 message received that they had been upgraded to PE.
