re: [Confirmed] Qatar May be Invited to Join One World

Delta and Alaska also have an announcement scheduled for Monday.
So we can start some new rumours.
1.Delta and Alaska announcing the end of codeshares as Alaska joining OW.:D
2.Delta and Alaska announcing closer ties and Alaska dropping AA codeshares.:(

Ah the possibilities!

PS-on a serious note went to the Alaska website and their FF site is out Friday to Sunday.Seems something happening.

1) Delta to buy AA and Alaska Airlines and form a mega mega US airline.
2) The new mega airline to defect from Skyteam to oneworld

Well Qatar it is then. This makes it interesting with EK and QF

re: [Confirmed] Qatar May be Invited to Join One World

Hooray! But as Ansett has already said, how will this work with Qantas and Emirates? I won't be so impressed if QF plans to leave OW. Surely they couldn't - or maybe the plan is to replace them with J* (God forbid!).

A significant addition for OW. For us QFFers, we now have a choice if both EK and QR, choices choices choices :)

re: [Confirmed] Qatar May be Invited to Join One World

The sandgropers who fly OneWorld will be happy with recent events, a lot more options now!

Finally, all the rumors are confirmed!

Qatar Airways has been elected as a oneworld member designate with an expected implementation time into oneworld of 12-18 months.

Wonder what this will mean for the QF/EK tie-up? Maybe QF intentionally chose Dubai to allow both QR and QF to continue their lucrative Australia-London routes...?

News - oneworld

I’m very happy with the news. I’m moving to Doha next year and was bracing myself to eventually lose my oneworld Emerald status (QF) and jump ship to Qmiles (Qatar’s FF program) – but not anymore!
I think Qatar Airways are fantastic – by far the best long haul business class I’ve ever flown. They have great connections into Europe from Doha too.

I wonder if the ACCC will look negatively on the Emirates Qantas deal as a result of this? This makes Emirates, Malaysia, Cathay Pacific and now Qatar all partners of Qantas directly or indirectly -- will interesting to see the competitive implications.

Re: [Confirmed] Qatar May be Invited to Join One World

I doubt that would be an issue, QR have an insignificant footprint in Oz compared to EK.

I see QR as the option to fly and get SC's in the event the QF/EK partnership doesn't offer SC's on EK only flights, at least we will have a regional OW airline to use.
Hopefully this will help QF make up their minds and force the hands so to speak and offer SC's on EK only flights.

Africa suddenly becomes a great option for an xONEx fare - this is friggin' awesome!

Its always worth having a fresh look at the numbers, in July for instance (before Qatar doubles it capacity over summer to Australia), given they are now carrying more traffic than BA I am not sure I would call it insignificant even before the upcoming capacity increase, and the middle eastern carriers are punching above their weight in the freight area:

Re: [Confirmed] Qatar May be Invited to Join One World

For Qantas FFlyers, here's a list of (non-QR) Qantas Partner flights from Doha.

British Airways: DOH-Bahrain and DOH-London
Royal Jordanian: DOH-Amman
Sri Lankan Airlines: DOH-Colombo (pending)

Jet Airways: DOH-Delhi DOH-Mumbai and DOH- Kochi
Emirates: DOH-DXB (perhaps)

Maybe not insignificant in relation to BA, but in relation to the EK/QF combine EK has ~1100% more inbound, QF has ~2300% more inbound with a combined 3500% more it is insignificant by more than an order of magnitude.

i.e. QR's inbound is 3% that of EK/QF combined.

Agree, however the fact capacity is being doubled, and One World becomes the dominant carrier in some cities as a result of both changes, I think its a significant factor that could influence the regulators. Qatar alone will soon have a similar number of services monthly to Etihad, making the arguments QF put to the authorities re the hookuo with DJ somewhat redundant regardless of the EK partnership.
