Qatar denied extra capacity into Australia

A poignant and accurate report from an Investment Manager that I follow on Livewire Markets. I’m amazed Qantas’ and the Government’s behaviour is only getting this much attention now. Better late than never though.

Not very accurate:
“Qatar Airways applied to operate an additional 28 weekly flights between Doha in Qatar and Sydney and Melbourne”

When you can’t get basic facts like that right, it makes me question the entire thing.

1 simple misquote undermines the “entire thing” among all of the other valid criticisms? LOL <redacted>.

It's not a simple misquote, it's the core act that's in question. And it's in QR's favour (effectively tripling their capacity into SYD/MEL instead of only doubling, which is much less threatening).

Edit: (removed as no longer relevant to the redacted post)

This story just keeps going and going. The Oz on-line; couple of snippets; try to read the whole article for context.

Singapore Airlines dragged into Qatar Airways debate after bizarre claim by Qantas

Singapore Airlines has responded to claims made by Qantas that the carrier may not have increased capacity into Australia had Qatar Airways been granted extra flights.

The bizarre claim was made by Qantas general counsel Andrew Finch on Tuesday, during a House of Representatives Standing Committee hearing on economic dynamism and competition.

On Wednesday, a Singapore Airlines spokeswoman said her company had experienced “strong demand for flights to and from Australia since international borders opened, and it was with this in mind that we have been able to increase our capacity into 2024”.

“Decisions to increase capacity to any destination across the Singapore Airlines network are based on a range of factors and market dynamics,” the spokeswoman said.

“Since pandemic travel restrictions gradually eased worldwide, we steadily restored capacity in tandem with the return in air travel globally.”

And of course people would have read the comments made by the PM in respect to the level of government that the rejection of Qatar's application was made. PM sheeted it home directly to the Transport Minister. This seems to weaken the argument that there was some sort of 'unseen, big issue' factors (ie international relations) at play in the decision.

On the bigger picture front, the government has a few seriously significant plates it is spinning at the moment. At least two of them are wobbling, and getting more unstable by the week if not the day, it would seem.

Ouch!

Qatar has pretty much got the green light from the LNP with all senior members saying they would approve it.

They will get the increase eventually, just need to wait for political sides to change, which I still think is another term or two away.

As much as I'd hope that to be true, I doubt it is. It's really easy to say whatever you like when in opposition. The fact is, both parties have been and are still receiving bribes from QF.

Roger has always been a straight shooter and i have also followed him for a long time.

Getting lot of coverage on the box.

I'm little surprised, I know QF get the kick in the guts often, deservedly so more so than not, but very interested how this plays out with so much mainstream media coverage. Is that still the case with social media cancer everywhere

Sooooo obvious MPs get the CL deal they protect QF, I totally get that, but there's always a tipping point, seems we're getting closer to it.

My old folks just passed through Doha for a few days and this story is fairly prominent in newspapers and media over there also.

QR just sitting back…watching…us implode…

from the SMH, hopefully a way around PayWall is avalable.

Why Qantas is a protected corporate species

This was reaally interesting from that Article.

"Did they not notice that the airline’s international division posted an extraordinary $906 million in earnings before interest and tax – a result that was in part achievable due to the elevated fares customers were paying?

Compare this with the international division’s performance in the 2019 financial year (the last full year before COVID), when it made $285 million.

Even more strikingly, it made this profit having flown around 45,000 available seat kilometres last year, which was far less than the 69,000 it flew in 2019."

So QFi flew 65% 0f the capacity it flew in 2019 but made 3.2 x the profit.

Slightly OT but I don't get the attraction of the CL. Is it just prestige? Because if it's food and drinks, I'm sure I can afford to buy the same stuff myself and can enjoy them at a time of my choosing and definitely no dress code. Even the VA lounge I just use it for the toilet, a small snack and just a place to sit. It's not like a must have.

CL a little step above VA lounge.

Yes food and beverage in layman's terms but it's more than that.

I secretly openly hope that both QF and the govt will implode. No I don't hold direct shares in any of the airlines. Don't know if my super fund does or not.
