Qatar denied extra capacity into Australia

if VA wet-leased QR birds and flew then too Qatar, as I suggested up thread, would that count as an Australian airline flying to Qatar or count as QR itself?

Just to expand on this, having just re-read the ACCC authorisation, QR/VA would have to cease codesharing on any routes flown by both carriers.
That does mean QR could withdraw from one (or more) of the four gateway airports and leave them for VA. The same applies to UA if they want to fly to the US.

It would get messy. I'd say they would apply for a new authorisation if that was to occur. This was a wide-reaching authorisation approved rather quickly because it's just permission to codeshare.

But free market means equal footing. I love QR and Doha, having lived there for a few years, but QR is heavily subsidized making it impossible for QF or any other airline to compete.
From the airport to ground-handling through financing of aircraft's etc, competing with QR is competing against the government of Qatar and few private companies can do that.

And this comes from someone thats gold on QR and really like the airline, the country and the people there.

If the government of Qatar wants to give a gift to Australian flyers, we should say thank you!

This is similar to the whole domestic car manufacturing argument. Let the rest of the world subsidise their industries and Aussie consumers win.

What a large number of AFF newbies appearing on this thread. So interesting to see what & who comes out of the oil fields cough sorry woodwork with this topic eh 😉 😂

A pretty poor observation on newcomers to AFF. Would you have a contribution to the issue of QR denied further capacity to/from Australia? Or do we go cough on the government teat ...

The crux of it isn't about competition on price, there's plenty of that, but competition at the higher quality end of the scale.

Your earlier point re mainland Chinese carriers seems true: already, ITA Matrix searches suggest they offer cheap J and Y fares to destinations in Asia other than their home nation.

However, surely allowing QR more flights would also lead to more price competition, irrespective as to where QR sits on the low end pricewise to high fares scale?

This ongoing spat between Q and Qatar is devaluing my hard earned Q pts. When One world alliance is anything but.

QR seems to have a better relationship with other OW members than QF however, the QF earning rates on OW airlines other than AA are pitiful.

Seems to be more of a QFF issue than a OW issue

If it wasn't for the strong ties to AA, I'd question whether QF would even remain in OW at all.

I'd add AS and JL to that list. Maybe even AY in coming years.

They're still frenemies with BA. As much as they like to talk up the disagreement, BA needs the Australia/NZ connections, and QF needs the LHR connections (even more once sunrise arrives). It's similar to the QF/NZ relationship these days.

QF leaving oneworld would not be welcomed by many, if any, oneworld carriers, excluding QR.

It would be interesting to see how things would change in the event the QF/EK deal ends.

I wouldnt be surprised to see BA open more Australia flights via DOH if they had more aircraft and providing QR were allowed to codeshare, effectively giving QR more rights into AU

My SC earn on BA has always been on par with AA, but I tend to take BA flights on routes that QF do not fly.

No impact to me if QR leaves OW or EK partnership dissolves, Id personally rather see OW add a South American Partner to make up for losing LATAM (that loss leave a huge gap, whereas plenty of ways to get to Europe).

BA couldn’t fly fifth freedom from DOH to Australia, they would only be able to carry pax from the UK. Even then the ASA says “Some restrictions apply on beyond and intermediate services. Intending applicants are advised to contact the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities for further information” - so probably some confidential stuff that could well prevent this kind of thing.

Do you mean using BA metal? I doubt BA will do that even if it was permitted. It's the crew rest times and overnight stays that is the killer. They have difficulty in much closer destinations to home never mind the other side of the world. I think they prefer the code share on others metal.

I do also wonder why (although I see in this thread some reasons for why) QF remain in one world. They just seem to be in love with EK and certainly as we know, EK is no friend of QR. Personally I love using BA Avios in QF flights, I think it's great value and better than what friends get using QF miles for the same flights I think...anyway that's off topic. I wonder if QR can or will appeal against this poor Australian Govt decision regarding the extra flights .

-The bulk of their international business is in the Americas, as is Air NZ’s.
-Being in an alliance is currently a point of distinction with VA. If QF adopted a similar horrible patchwork alliance they would lose a lot of business, IMO.
-As stated earlier QF still does plenty of business with BA, CX etc

QR can’t appeal squat, it was a decision between governments, not airlines, and the default is the status quo. No reasons required.

With 18? routes to Asia from mainline and a few more on JQ, I’d guess that it is almost as important as the Americas.

But in the context of this thread Europe is just a niche business compared to the combined Asia/Americas.
