At least something good will come out of the gimmicky PER-LHR route. Would love an A380 to Asia to give another option to avoid the A330.

Would prefer it if the A380 received a seat upgrade to match the A330. Not a fan of a stranger stepping over me in J!

Well until there is direct aisle access for every passenger in J on the A380 you could select one of the seats in a centre pair or fly with someone you know...

It would be nice if QF would select a better J seat than the 'regional' J seat they currently use in the A330 (and soon to use on the 789).

Re: Melbourne the latest City to get shafted by Qantas

...but getting a meal in a box in Y when others can serve something in a tray after a 10hr flight is hardly premium...

I really like the boxed meals. Prefer it to a standard tray covered in commercial shrapnel

MEL to EU is now 2 stop?

Doing some dummy bookings:

When the new QF9 route takes over, passengers from MEL to the EU can only buy (online anyway) QF9 then BA codeshare backtrack into EU. Maybe the fares for the codeshare EK service ex MEL to EU have not yet been released???

Re: Melbourne the latest City to get shafted by Qantas

Still a lot fewer than there used to be. This also applies to most other Australian cities

And it applies to most airlines around the world. Can you really see it as sustainable that QF can operate internationally from multiple destinations within Australia? That is pie in the Sky dreaming on your behalf. Look at the US. They don't fly from every city to worldwide desitinations. QF could not survive running multiple hubs all over the country.

There was a model previously... daily flights from all capital cities to SIN which combined into the principal flight onward to london. QF have gone back to the daily flights from most capitals to SIN, but no onward connection.

And a model that worked previously doesn't always continue to work. Industries change and competition enters the market. Hubs change to and clearly DXB is working as a better option. You cannot expect the same model to keep working when everything around it changes

Or not? QF is cutting flights through there by 50%. The A380 is going back to Asia... the market they pulled out of.

As usual QF enhancements are about enhancing the facade but cutting /reducing the underlying service. Seat reduction, prices going up, 2 stop into EU for QF pax from MEL, narrower seats in Y

PER passengers get a proper enhancement only if going to LHR, worse if going EU

I agree with JohnK that it's a gimmick. Won't take long to be replicated and highly dependant on low fuel prices.

International loads are up. They are code sharing with EK which is far better than they had with BA.

The A380 is seasonal. Big difference.

Some people may want to fly to LHR direct, and don't wish to stop in DXB or Asia. But they still can get 1 stop to EU via DXB on codeshares.

EK flights will not show if the dates you're looking at are more than 330 days in the future.

Possibly, but QF isn't making as much money on the DXB service as they are deploying the aircraft to cities in Asia. If they were making more money via DXB the aircraft would have stayed on that route.

Re: Melbourne the latest City to get shafted by Qantas

As per my previous post when I tried QF online I could not see a one stop MEL into EU, only 2 stop via QF9 + codeshare BA. Maybe I didn't look hard enough?. I'll try again later within the 330 day EK release

Aren't they? Considering they have 2 own metal services to DXB compared to what skies into Asia you are comparing apples to oranges. Care to share your figures source?

Put it this way, at the end of any long flight (not picking on these), the pilots' performance will be such that if equated to alcohol consumption, they would not be allowed to drive.

14 hours on duty/ not resting according to the study I read. The risks apply to other industires too (eg emergency services and healthcare). Time of day are also factors: eg back of clockj shifts are worse than day shifts

They'll only have a single service through DXB from next year. If the aircraft deployed on that route were making more money than flying to Asia they'd be where they're making the money.

So you don't have anything to back up your statement then?

I'm really Looking forward to giving this new route via PER a go once launched. It's great news that the F lounge will still be accessible in MEL, although I totally agree with many contributors so far regarding departure time ex MEL.
A late evening departure from MEL works best for those of us who work, who don't wish to take an additional day of Annual leave or cut the holiday to Europe short by one day to make the mid afternoon departure.
Needless to say, a late evening departure EX MEL would certainly not be feasible with the connecting PER passengers.

Whilst not ideal to PEWR having a late evening dep ex MEL it is still feasible: again it would mean a full day at work and late evening to the airport. Some airlines already to this ex-MEL as there is no curfew. It would also mean that pax from other cities could also have a full working day. To me this is quite important whether travel is for work or holiday.
