Question about the forum software

Why do I get a link to this post in my unread list (http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/your-tips/travelling-tips-10439.html), when I:

  • Cannot open it
  • Get Invalid Post when I try to do anything with it

Admin and I have looked into this event and have managed to figure what happened

AFF now has a "require moderation" feature in place; when a new member posts a reply or new thread, some software analyses the post to see whether it should be checked before being released to all. This feature has helped keep a fair number of spam adverts from appearing on the site

The new poster, created a new thread; admin approved the thread but not the post within the thread and so you were getting linked into a thread with no content. If the post had been approved, then there would be no issue

On checking the post itself, it has been seen to be spam related and so has been deleted as has the thread itself.

Ok, thanks. Looked like some bizarre bug in the software.

Putting on another hat, I could argue that there should be a rule in the software that prevents it from happening though! (But that's my day job hat!)

I did not even notice - I simply clicked my 'AFF New Posts' shortcut on my Mozilla Bookmarks Toobar ...

A question for the moderators.

I'm in Sydney at the moment and my laptop is set to EST as that's where I spend most of my life. I just posted a reply and noticed that the time stamp was EST-30 minutes (i.e Adelaide time). I live in Adelaide (on the weekends) and I'm registered on AFF from my home computer, so does that determine my time stamp?

If not, why the 30 minutes time difference?

Curious!

I'm not a moderator, but hope I can answer your question.

Your AFF (vBulletin) profile has a reference to your timezone, so any posts you make - even overseas will still reference your home time, not your local time.

I believe it's in your 'options' profile as ADL time (GMT+9.30).

'Tis interesting when in the US and logging on to AFF (and FT) and seeing MEL time for the posts - new ones are often "in the future". :)

While we are on the forum software again and only relevant to those that see Google ads syndication on AFF and FT.

In the last few weeks when clicking on a thread to view the latest posts google ads appear throughout the post, as per usual, but almost always I get an information message "website not found" on one of the ads, usually thw last one. It is like the google ad transforms into a web page in its own right. On AFF it means that sometimes I have to press the back space button twice to return back to list of posts. On FT I may have to press the back space button on a number of occassions as the screen appears to be busier with google ads.

Yes I know this problem can be fixed with Gold membership or changing a setting that suppresses google ads. I am more interested in why it has started appearing.

Is something happening to AFF today? It has taken me half an hour to display a thread and then post this reply.

I've been popping on and off over the last few hours, and I have not noticed any real change from normal.

As I often get the tasteful message
The webpage cannot be found

on my pages I thought i'd poke around, see what is happening. I can actually reproduce the problem by creating an empty page that contains exactly 4 googlesyndication banners on a page. The 4th one always, without fail, gives the error. It is actually an HTTP 400 Bad Request error that is being generated, and as far as I can tell the problem is actually with the URL generated by some Javascript on the GoogleSyndication site.

My conclusion: Google have broken something.

Thanks for answering Mark. I thought I was the only one having the issue and going crazy.

and I'm brave enough to say I have absolutely no idea what JohnK and mark_oz are talking about (and no, don't bother trying to explain it  - I'll pass  )

I now have to sign in to AFF on a regular basis even though I have checked the box to remember the user name and password. Has there been a recent change to AFF software settings?

This is not an issue with FT or other forums that I frequent!
