and I'm brave enough to say I have absolutely no idea what JohnK and mark_oz are talking about (and no, don't bother trying to explain it  - I'll pass  )

I now have to sign in to AFF on a regular basis even though I have checked the box to remember the user name and password. Has there been a recent change to AFF software settings?

This is not an issue with FT or other forums that I frequent!
no change for me. Check you are not removing cookies when closing your browser.

I have not made any changes to IE settings. If cookies were being removed then wouldn't this issue also occur with FT and other forums?

I only remove cookies when I'm closing the fridge   ....

but I have to agree with JohnK, I have to sign in everytime to AFF & FT (unless I sign in multiple times in a day, then sometimes it seems to remember me).

Still. simpler for me to sign in every time than try to work out what's going wrong....

On some occassions instead of a google ad it is displaying a message of webpage not found which behaves likes a webpage in its own right.

This is what the message looks like.

I have not had to sign in to either all day  .

One day I'll have to get you or Dave Noble to play with my laptop and get all these settings right.

Been a while since I've had to log in here or on FT. I used to have a problem here, but that problem went away of its own accord.

I dont have to sign in either my Mac, PC or iPod touch using IE, Firefox and Safari.

I have just noticed that when I click on new posts only posts for the last 10 days appear. The rest are flagged as read. Also the marker for the last read post in a thread has been reset so instead of taking me to the first new post in a thread it takes me to the beginning of the thread.

As I have been away for 16 days it is a little difficult to catch up with what has been happening on AFF.

BTW this does not happen on FT or other forums I visit so is there some setting that needs to be tweaked?

Can't help you John and I was not aware of the 10 day limit.

I feel AFF works generally better in regard to "Unread new posts" than FT.

Log on to FT look at one or two threads and go away; come back and the last read timer is reset for all.

With AFF it's set for individual threads. i.e. You can look at one or two then go away. When you come back those you have not read still appear under new posts (unless it was more than 10 days ago).

My experience with Unread posts is the same as serfty's. I much prefer the way it works here!

As an aside, I think this board needs an autolock threads after no posts for two years function :)

If a thread is posted to after a long period for no v good reason, we do manually tend to close the thread down :)

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the setup here; if it hasn't been updated in 10 days then it's likely that theres not much more to say.

I agree that the setup of new posts is much better on AFF than FT but I feel that 10 days is too short a time frame especially if you have been away for 3-4 weeks. Also the last post read in a thread marker being reset after 10 or so days is coughbersome especially for threads with more than one page.

With the type of captive audience we have here and their (dare I say it) weird travel patterns I believe that 30 days for new posts rather than 10 days would be a more realistic figure.

I have been getting errors the past few days when clicking on the link in an email notification about a thread being updated. It looks like this:

There seems to have been a problem with the The Australian Frequent Flyer Online Community database.
Please try again by clicking the
Refresh button in your web browser.
An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, whom you can also contact if the problem persists.
We apologise for any inconvenience.

Hitting refresh works fine, but I wondered if there is some problem developing with the forum database?

I have seen that message frequently on other forums - often proceeded by a fatal crash. Not that I want to raise any panic ;)

We will be running some database maintenance jobs later in the day when there are fewer users online (to minimize disruption to service). Please PM me if the problem continues tomorrow and I'll investigate further.

Thanks

I have seen that error a few times in the last few days but it has occurred when I click on New Posts!
