Question about the forum software

There was time there that I was experiencing a GPF and/or blue/black screen of death on a regular basis. Now I have stopped installing new software it has become a little more stable but my PC still has its fair share of problems.

I have said it before and I will continue to say it. PCs are great to play games and surf the internet but should not be used to run any type of business application. YMMV.
Unfortunately my mileage does not vary! I've just wasted a day and a half on a new PC that I need to get setup as a workstation for a user. For some reason it is preventing me from installing our main business applications on it. Installshield just won't start, no errors or anything, just silently does nothing. I can usually solve most problems but even after disabling Symantec's rubbish, Acer's own DEP garbage and even resorting to wiping the HDD clean and resetting the machine back to factory defaults, I have waved the white flag.

I now have to wait 3-5 days for the Acer guy to come out and replace the image on the partition as about the only thing left is that it must be corrupted. I have wasted more of my time than the PC cost in the first place.

I HATE WINDOWS COMPUTERS!!!!!!

Right, that feels a bit better. I am now going to eat my sandwhich and browse the Aussie Arcade forums. :)

We made the switch in 2005 getting an iMac then in 2006 getting an iBook for mrssimongr. We will be upgrading to a new iMac in June/July depending on when the updates come out. They "just work" although if you are a real geek the lack of personal upgradability does annoy so initial selections are critical. I wanted to get a macbook air but our IT dept wouldnt let me use it instead of my company issued laptop and they dont open flt so my current <A href="http://"http://www.standit.com" target=_blank>standit thing wont work with it.

Sounds like your IT dept is quite smart, and you are making Steve Jobs even richer.

Well my options are to make Bill Gates richer by having an PC tower cluttering up my workspace or make Steve Jobs richer by having a great form factor and something that is less prone to BSOD, virii and doesnt require complex software installations to add a blue tooth mouse.

In relation to the work IT dept - we will have to disagree on that - given you have no facts about my IT dept or what I have considered you are in no position to make a judgement.

One of these days I am sure I will post something that you wont make a snide commen about - but I am not convinced about that.

Keep working on it...

Stills seems to be slow now.

I managed to log on around midday and was able to read a few posts but it was extremely slow.

It should be much better now.

We were having some disk storage issues today.

The engineers have just identified the problem. And, hopefully, have corrected it.

Apologies for the slow response today.

I have noticed recently when viewing 'New Posts' the thread description in the internet explorer browser has been corrupted. If I click to view a thread the browser description changes to '#185974#185974#185974#185974', where #185974 is the first unread post in the thread, instead of 'Question about the forum software - Page 27 - The Australian frequent Flyer Community'. Not a big issue but can become confusing trying to keep track of the thread currently viewing.

JohnK,

Not an issue for me either using Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari.

Maybe the issue is at your end.

Hmm, doesn't seem to do that for me - looks normal...

If it is then it is my profile and not the computer I am using.

The issue is noticeable on the work PC, the BNE J lounge desktops and now my home laptop.

John, you are not alone, it just happened to me. I took a screenshot if mods/admin is interested.

Using IE6 here at work. 99% of threads are fine, just once just now it came up as "post#118223post#118223post#118223" in the title bar.

HELP please.

From last night, when using Mozilla Firefox (my primary browser) the AFF forum has lost most of its graphics. I've no idea how to sort this out so I'm seeking ideas to sort this out.

It only seems to happen on AFF and does not occur on IE or Safari.

Interesting, and a little weird. A few things to try.

I'm assuming you're using Firefox 3, and that images from other sites work correctly.

Start Firefox in "Safe" mode. Start. Programs. Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox (safe mode)
Visit AFF and check if the images are visible.

Note whether the images are working or not. Exit Firefox.

If they are, then post back. If not:
Launch Firefox normally, Tools, Options, Privacy. Under "Private Data", Click "Clear Now".
Close and re-open Firefox.
Try again. If still not working.
Tools, Options, Privacy. Under "Cookies", Click "Show Cookies". In the search box, search for "frequentflyer", select all Cookies and remove.

Quit and restart Firefox, and revisit AFF. You'll need to log back in to the site.

See how those things go, and post back.

Also - ensure that File, Work Offline hasn't been ticked, and that Tools, Options, Content, Load Images Automatically is ticked (and that frequentflyer.com.au isn't in the "exemptions" list)

BTW, I use Firefox 3.0.1 on Windows Vista without any issues.

I am using Firefox 3.0.1 right now (and have been all day) and no issues with viewing graphics on AFF.

Mal,

Thanks for that. :D

I followed your instructions through and all is now OK. Not sure exactly what the issue was though. I use version 3.0.1 on XP and I've used FF for years without issues so this was a first for me.

Is there a specific reason why we lost the member list and the ability to sort members by the number of posts? Any chance of getting this feature back as I cannot what harm can be caused by leaving the feature on AFF?

Since the software outage yesterday, (Or was it just a server change, I notice the ip address has changed). When I log in I now have ads all over the places and can not access the gold members area. Any other paid members affected?
