Question about the forum software

Is anyone else experiencing time-outs on AFF when viewing threads or replying to a thread recently? It is happening to me at least once a day.

And before you ask the time-outs are occuring on the work computer, laptop in Sydney using Optus broadband, desktops in the Qantas lounges and it has become more noticeable and extremely painful now that I am using Mobile Wireless Broadband from 3.

No issues for me this evening.

May I suggest (when using your own computer) put the following sites into the restricted zone -
  • aweber.com
  • cbprosense.net
  • doubleclick.net
  • googlesyndication.com
  • s2d6.com
  • webhop.net
(On Internet Explorer, click "tools", scroll to "Internet Options", click the tab for "security" on the pop-up window, click "restricted sites" then the "sites" button underneath it. Add the above addresses.)

Thanks. Performance is a little better but the status bar is always busy with "Waiting for http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/...." and green progress bars slowly inching forward even when nothing is being downloaded. I still cannot add posts on AFF. Tried Flyertalk last night and no issues at all.

I think my biggest issue is trying to fine tune Vista Business. What was I thinking? I should also remove the free trial of Norton antivirus and install something like Spyware Doctor. And 3 mobile broadband is not much better as I am constantly losing signal from the 6th floor apartment in Spring Hill.

PCs. I would have said they are only good for games but I am having issues when the laptop freezes occasionally with whatever Vista Business feels is important to check at that point in time....

Is there anyone with Vista Business installed and able to post on AFF? As I can post on Flyertalk and other forums could the issue be related specifically to AFF? Has AFF ever been tested with Vista Business?

Unbelievable! I have a brand new laptop and it is absolutely useless....

AFF works pretty well with Vista. The version should be irrelevent ( other than between 32bit and 64bit) .

AFF works with both 32 and 64 bit

I have various Vista versions (Ultimate, Home Premium and Business) on my various machines, and no problem whatsoever.

I have a brand new shrink wrapped laptop with Vista Business and I cannot add posts to AFF. I don't know why! Perhaps I should uninstall Norton. That is the only software I installed to the laptop since buying it last week.

reinstall vista with a clean installation rather than a cruddy prebuild provided by manufacturer. just ensure have downloaded drivers for network cards beforehand

JohnK,

I'm using Vista Business 64 bit and Mozilla Firefox to make this post. It's all working fine here.

I don't use Norton but Avast (free) for virus protection.

I now refuse to use Norton. In the early days, it was pretty much the one to beat, but now, it's dire. Resource hungry, responsible for many network/firewall problems that are beyond 'Joe Average User' to sort out, and worst of all, it's lousy at what it's main job is meant to be - virus protection.
My particular favouriteis AVG (free version of course).

Reinstall Vista? Drivers for network cards?

I use 3 Mobile broadband and spend most of my time in Brisbane and I bought the laptop in Sydney. I do not have the download speed, patience or even expertise to reinstall Vista. I don't understand why there is an issue with adding posts on AFF. I will have to live without AFF when not at work in Brisbane if their is no simple fix.

The next challenge will be to use 3 Mobile broadband on the Lenovo R60 XP laptop at home in Sydney which has been configured to run Optus cable broadband. I briefly tried running it last night and I could not get 3 Mobile broadband to work.

My particular favouriteis AVG (free version of course).
I think I will dump the trial version of Norton. I have heard recommendations for AVG from a few people. How does it compare to Spyware Doctor (the free version of course).

Ah the joys of PC technology....

What browser are you using? I suspect the problems you are experiencing is something to do with the way your browser is setup.

Try download firefox and run AFF from that browser.

Where do you get to, when trying to post a reply?

(and have you tried the different options for editors, if using the wysiwyg editor, try the standard or basic)

At least try disabling Norton, if that's possible without going to the trouble of uninstalling it, and see how you go. My laptop runs Vista Ultimate and (free) AVG, and I have experienced no related problems. Can't compare AVG to anything else as it's what I have used for as long as I can remember, but I've had few, if any, problems with it. Mind you, when downloading AVG free, they do everything possible to hook you into a paid version of it! Oh, and I'm using IE7 as a browser (though I keep intending to have a crack at firefox).

I am using IE7 version 7.0.6001.18000. I have not touched the setup which was the same strategy used when I first used XP.

Well then its not the browser. Thats the default browser I use with Vista. Also, the problen you are reporting has never been reported before. Must be something specific to your setup.

Ironically with Norton, it was a huge resource hof for years. The newest ones 360(?) is the first one that *isn't*.
