Red Roo - No more F to HKG = No more A380/Skybed Mark 1?

Not me - I always thought Mr FM and I weren't normal! Seriously love flying, love F, 40 days to retirement (not that I am counting) so plenty of time, so much rather take a bit extra and go F. we have already booked F to Nairobi in Aug with Emirates and then a quick J down to South Africa, rather than J SYD-JNB. haven't counted the extra flying time, but probably a lot more than 5 hours!

Yes but the population of AFF are not a good sample of the general world opinion on flying, that is 'get where I'm going ASAP with as few connections as possible'

Well you are now :), and IME a droopy Mk2 is no different to an angled Mk1 from a comfort perspective.
I can't compare as I haven't flown on a MkII seat but I had no problem falling asleep on a MkI. I actually thought it was fairly comfortable and was expecting much worse the first time I tried it after reading up on it online...

yeah - while every one is different I am often surprised at the angst directed to skybed mk1.

In my case I have never had trouble sleeping on a skybed mk1 or any sloping flat option.

I do have issues in the BA business level flat bed as they are too narrow for this foetal position sleeper.

I didn't mean to imply that either were uncomfortable per se, just that there is, in reality, very little difference in comfort between the two. I can sleep in both.

TBH, the best thing about the Mk2 is the screen location and the larger privacy divider.

Agreed, I have learnt to fine tune the amount of recline and foot rest position to maximise comfort. What most people seem to forget when complaining about it, is how much better it is than whY.

or, how inferior it is compared to the competition.

personally, i don't compare business class to economy class. it's not a valid comparison.

i compare it to the competition... cx offering full flat beds for the purpose of actually (for me) getting sleep.

i compare it in terms of innovation. some carriers are on their second or third iteration of flat business class beds. and the MK1 is kind of left behind.

i don't say this flippantly... if I can't sleep, the benefit of business class is pretty much lost on me for any full service carrier.

Re: Rumour:[Denied by RR] Qantas to ban JQ SYD-MEL pax from F lounges & send to J lou

So anyone care to take a punt on my options for my F award ticket in Jan? Will I get a points refund and downgrade? The fare itself is an HND-HKG-SYD ticket in F.

wouldn't it be helpful to know?!

QF indicates they'll get around to you once they decide they're ready. So instead of you being able to make alternative arrangements as soon as possible, and snap up valuable award seats on alternative carriers, you are left in limbo.

But apparently it's not unusual for major announcements to be made and back office adjustments take place while leaving passengers totally in the dark.*

Taking a punt... you'd need to have a look and see the fare difference with just the HND-HKG sector staying in F. Does this affect the whole pricing of the ticket? (similar to the '!' where your 'business class flight to London' becomes 'your flight from sydney to london will be in economy').

*I cannot see a reason why there was not a straight out statement saying first class is to be withdrawn.

I found the same! Great for lying back and watching the IFE though.

QF has a published table of what happens when there is an involuntary downgrade (refund, etc.). I think Markis linked to it in an earlier post.

You have a point, and having now flown CX J, I concur that CX is much better. That said, isn't the CX J seat really marketed by its manufacturer as an F seat, so you would expect it to be better?

I don't think the table is available for the public, but even if it was, it doesn't make sense to me.

If I was downgraded on tomorrow's HKG-SYD from F to J, the refund table says I'd get AUD525.

Given a full F fare on tomorrow's flight is HKD31610, compared to a business saver of HKD23447, that's an actual difference of AUD1295.

How does AUD525 fit in?

Schedules are now in the GDS - 744 every day in October, from airlineroute.net

QANTAS starting 29SEP14 is changing operations to its Sydney – Hong Kong service, as the airline ends Airbus A380 operation to Hong Kong on year-round basis. The airline will operate 3-class Boeing 747-400 aircraft on daily basis from this date, replacing 5 weekly A380 and 2 weekly 4-class 747-400.
However, based on latest adjustment as of 22MAY14, QANTAS appears to continue 5 weekly A380 service from 11DEC14 to 26JAN15, however First Class service is not offered.
QF127 SYD1125 – 1745HKG 744 D
QF128 HKG1945 – 0810+1SYD 744 D

Between 11DEC14 and 26JAN15, A380 operates Day x23

Did I read right earlier there will still be an F cabin to HKG and seats will go to high tier frequent flyers in business class with business class service?

If that is the case I may as well try to use the rest of my AA miles.

correct!!!

So my flights on 6/10 and 12/10 (qf127/128) have officially been enhanced from a380 to 3 class 747. My F upgrade request now looks like :

Your Flights
From To Required Upgrade Status
Monday
06 Oct 14 Sydney Hong Kong Upgrade to:
Points: -1 Requested
You have nominated for an upgrade at the airport if your Flight Upgrade Award is not available prior.

Which would be great if it was real.

:-(

Good luck finding availability before 29 Sept......after that I wouldn't waste points trying to grab an F seat in a clapped out 747. (always the super busy x-mas period where you can try your luck)

Wont happen, there wont be any F seat 744s in the fleet.

Q - would you prefer to travel with an airline that offers a J seat that people think is just like F......or, one where people think the J seat is a joke?

Sorry JP, to that I say - Big Deal! As you would have seen in this thread: an ignorant call centre person can simply deny you a valid refund (in the linked case a window seat fee when a changed service didn't have any window seats available).

For every person on AFF this happens to, how many of the great unwashed get caught and ripped off? Just like the mASA call (non) fee - it was kept being charged months after people were complaining that they were being ripped off by being charged something they shouldn't have been. Months!
