Should obese people pay extra for flying

Obese people should automatically get priority with having a 'shadow' that keeps free seats next to them empty.

Out with the Platinum shadow, in with the Obese Shadow. After all, Obese NEED the seat, WP's just want the extra space.

Sounds great! Technically I'm obese according to BMI. I can fit a Y seat nicely but happy to get a shadow.

Actually the only large people I'm had an issue with are those whose torso fits the seat fine but their arms then hang over.

In all seriousness I think there should be a premium economy size seat in economy with a surcharge.

No better service, no additional perks, same cabin, undivided, just s bigger seat. Make the price reasonable so as to encourage heavy weights to pay!

Funny enough I did a survey recently that suggested exactly this, a bigger seat that would allow you to spread out and work on the plane without the business class extras.

I wonder how employers would feel being forced to pay double for some people.

He said, she said?

It'd be the FA's that would note it and get it added to an FF profile.

Depending on route it's only 1.5x, but it's still more than now.

Perhaps it'll spur healthier lifestyles, although that could be seen as discrimination I suppose. So maybe it'll just be taken out of your pay.

Airline seats are getting narrower and pitch is getting smaller, but the average person is taller and heavier than ever before. I think everybody is looking at this from the wrong angle - the airlines are at fault here. It's surely just a matter of time before somebody in LOTFAP starts a class action claiming an infringement of their right to travel in reasonable comfort and with adequate personal space.

Yes - that is called paying for a seat with more room...

Fat or overweight people know they are fat but just don't appreciate how fat they are. Three months ago I took a short trip in Y SYD-ADL with my 19 and 18 year olds, and it wasn't until they showed me how much I encroached on their seating space that I actually realised how fat I was. I am 175cm and was just a touch over 120kg, blood pressure was through the roof etc etc. I actually started with LiteNeasy food and I now weigh 102kg, meaning I lost 18kg in just over 2 months. I am still considered obese by BMI standards, but my main point is fat people just don't appreciate how unconfortable they make it for fellow pax. Some people don't care, but others may have a more serious problem and have more problems correcting it.

We all know the only cause of obeseness is the amount food you eat, and everyone can do something about that. I am not having a shot at fat people because I am one, but I am doing something about it. It is apparent that some posters here are overweight, but because they pay for their ticket they don't seem to care about the person sitting next to them. Remember, the person sitting next to you has paid the same money so why should they be unconfortable when they travel. You would be aware of any problem in this regard before you buy a ticket, so travel in a larger seat (J) or buy a comfort seat, and again this is not for your comfort but the pax next to you. Don't shoot me down in flames too much, everyone is entitled to their opinion and that is what this forum is about.

Good on you for doing something about your own health.

Medication, in some instances can cause obesity. Epilepsy medication used to cause it (not sure if the medication has got better in the last 15 years).

Fantastic, good on you.... Keep it up.
I think you have made some very valid points in regard to other peoples perceptions too.

Don't lose too much weight though, if you do airlines might decide to make seats even smaller.... Q.... M.O'L

I have post this before but at 183cm, back in the mid nineties I was ~110kg and my "Muffin Top" did sit on top of economy arm rest.

My life style then included 2-3 'business' lunches a week.

Anyhoo, I won a trip to Ireland on QF, and after mixing it with three weeks there, the old dart and France, I came home at 97kg.

I had done a lot of walking and did not have food on tap during the trip. (As well as lugging SWMBO et al luggage around.)

Anyhoo I made a concerted effort to walk 18 holes of Golf at least three times a month (any who have seen me play would realise I do get a lot of metres in during a round - much more then "course length". :p

In six months, my weight dropped to ~90kg, my waist measurement from 107cm to 102cm and generally felt better for it.

No longer did I use up the full 18+" of lateral economy seat space. I was still doing those business lunches but tended to skip dessert.

Having typed thet, it mkust be said there are some who are simply Big! No realistic amount of exercise / diet will help.

Put it in the contract.



Yeah, good luck with that, one of the standard clauses you'll see in contracts is one that states that other clauses can be dropped if not legal. That wouldn't exist if contracts can overwrite other laws.

Of course there would be nothing stopping a company providing a health and fitness program and providing bonuses to employees who reach personal target BMI's.

Mine went beyond that.
