SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Well that has been a fun few days transferring points and flipping itineraries around.

Hopefully 6 months will fly by like it has since the original booking.

(SQ R)SYD-SIN-HKG
(CX F)HKG-ZRH
(SQ F)LHR-SIN(R)-SYD (+waitlisted better times)

Not sure if my partner will fly economy again after this .

Anyone know if I can claim the $40 worth of vouchers on my way back through Sin in a weeks time?

I am here at SIN now but the line is massive and will be coming back through next week.

You can claim in either direction as long as you have an onwards flight and are just transiting. It's only a $20 voucher now if you are ex Aus departure round trip.

you can claim either inbound or outbound as long as one of those involves a transit less than 24 hours. The other way can be a full stopover if you want (ie no requirement both times be transit only).

Stopped on one the way to the gate, no que so got my $20 and promptly spent it. Now onboard SQ852 to CAN - completely full flight tonight.

So as not to distract from JessicaTam's Trip Report, I'll post this here:

<snip> Just a pointer here for all - there are basically no constraints on what the F chefs will prepare for you if you have dietary reqts or just preferences - basically if the chefs have the ingredients they will be happy to prepare it for you - just ask.
<snip>.

Sounds like a challenge to me ... "I'll have a Four 'n Twenty, thanks, with dead-horse on the side".

Also from JT's report ...
I visited the Private Room three times whilst in SIN. The first visit was on arrival, at about 0030 for a little over half an hour. My booking at the transit hotel was for 0200, so I didn't want to be too early. The staff were very attentive and escorted me through the rabble of the SKLounge and the plebs in the F lounge. ;)

What is the difference between the SQ 'First lounge' and The Private Room (besides being obviously different spaces)? If you rock up to the lounge entrance without a TPR invitation (as mentioned above), with a F boarding bp , will you be escorted to TPR or jest be left to range in the F lounge?

SQ R or F BP get's you access to TPR - SQ SKL F for eligible SQ status pax / eligible *A pax etc - of course SQ R and F BP holders can enjoy SKL F too - it has a fully fledged manned bar there - Mohammed is the barman Sun to Fri - always fun to chat to him.

So as not to distract from JessicaTam's Trip Report (Heading towards the light), I'll post this here:
There was an amazing amount of room in front of row 1. I could not discern its purpose other than "because it's there".:)
The reason that space is there is that you were on 773 - it has a bigger F cabin footprint than 77W - so when they refitted the 773 with the identical F product that is in 77W they ended up with the space in front Row 1 and space behind Row 2 - and you had O/H bins too
I had a look at the menu, but there was nothing there that either appealed, or suited my diet. No matter, that is what the F lounge dining area was for, with plenty to choose from.
Just a pointer here for all - there are basically no constraints on what the F chefs will prepare for you if you have dietary reqts or just preferences - basically if the chefs have the ingredients they will be happy to prepare it for you - just ask.
I spent a little while in the 'telephone room' in the lounge. This was offered to me as a quiet place to rest. Quiet it was, just not very comfortable. One failing of the lounge is that there really isn't anywhere to stretch out for 40 winks. Not that I could see at any rate.
Indeed there are no 'nap' facilities in TPR - space constraints. Just reading bw the lines the footprint of TPR is just not big enough for SQ to do the upgrade of TPR which has been postponed and postponed - I have no doubt they want to add nap space of some type and upgrade the lounge in general to match the gulf carriers offerings - BUT - SQ do not own the real estate but rather lease it from Changi Airport Group - therein lies SQ's dilemma.

If one needs to make date changes to an award booking, can you do it yourself online or you have to call/visit an SQ customer service centre ?

Date change simple to do online provided there is suitable rdpt stock available on the date you require - no penalty to change dates.

We flew HND SIN and SIN SYD in F with SQ this past week. Check in at HND was fast but no invitation to TPR offered. Flight and crew great, despite quite a few blocks of CAT, I think it was almost an hour after takeoff before the seat belt sign went off. I enjoyed both the Dom 2006 and the Krug en route and the lobster tagliatelle from the menu was delicious. My partner doesn't travel well and chooses not to eat on the plane so on arrival in SIN we headed to TPR after showing our F boarding passes. Incidentally, I was asked to show our itinerary for our onward flight to SYD 2 days later. We enjoyed a late lunch somewhat disrupted by a very loud telephone conversation that lasted the duration of our lunch. I was amused that one of the desk ladies advised us that the TPR would close at 2am so we couldn't stay there all night - I think she thought we were going to camp out there until our flight 2 days later.

As this was the end of a two week trip to Japan, I chose to stay at the Crowne Plaza Changi as we were flying SQ 211 on Monday morning. Our first time at the CP and it was a lovely hotel. Despite the busy construction zone adjacent, we didn't hear any noise inside the room on the first night. The second night we were woken at 11pm by a hammering sound that carried on all night unfortunately. I can't imagine how noisy it was outside of the room - we didn't investigate - and I didn't think there was any point in changing rooms as I couldn't imagine that any room would have escaped the noise.

While walking through the check in area we were asked if we needed assistance and I asked for directions to the F check in lounge. We were escorted to the lounge and quickly sorted with BPs and TPR invitations - our first ones despite 3 previous sectors in F. We had A14 listed as our departure gate.

Once in the TPR, we were welcomed back by 'Joey', who had looked after us when we were there on Saturday - pretty impressed with that. On leaving the TPR, I asked the lady manning the desk if we could have the invitations back and she said they had already been destroyed. Hmmph! Anyway, before we got to the escalator the lady caught up with us and gave us the invitations. She asked if we would like them rewritten as 'notes' had been made on them, I said no, it was fine. The 'notes' were our respective hair colour and clothing description - I've gone from brown to black hair and my partner from grey to white :)

We headed off on the long trek to A14 at 8.50am to find the gate deserted and then found that the flight had been moved to gate B9 - double the trek the other end of the terminal. Is it unrealistic to have expected the TPR staff to have notified us of the change?

I ordered BTC Boston Lobster but it was a very, very small serve. Dom 2006 and Latour - both very enjoyable. Service great and we had lots of bumps again with crew having to suspend service and be seated several times. As a nervous flyer, I appreciated the updates from the Captain about the turbulence.

Slightly OT but for us, flying J or F is a real treat, however, I appreciate that for some it is everyday and mundane. This trip has highlighted for us how inconsiderate people have become to others around them. Whether it be the couple in the Q Lounge at SYD in shorts, singlets and thongs (and filthy feet to match), the man having the skype conversation over his breakfast in the TPR with a patchy connection so we heard 'can you hear/see me' a dozen times, the several people in the TPR taking photos of anything and everything (the TV???) including US which we felt was a great intrusion on our privacy and enjoyment of the lounge or the absolute devastation of a toilet cubicle at SYD with one or other of human waste product completely covering the toilet bowl. Don't get me started on those who simply cannot close a hotel room door without slamming it shut!

Youngest son did the TPR this morning so the champagnes went in the following order. PH Rare in the lounge then change into PJs on board and go the Krug and then the Dom. I think he is enjoying my Kris Miles.

He told me yesterday the PH was his favourite. Said he was going to thoroughly enjoy his flights.

Long day at the TPR office.

Arrived on SQ 479 from CPT at 6.00am

Piper Rare was served after a shower.

Despite the brekky menu, I requested the lobster ( takes them about 20-30 mins to organise).

Served on time, then 2 hours of emails etc before boarding the free Heritage tour

Jumped off that in town ( didn't head back to Changi).

A quick curbside bite of lunch in in Haji Lane in Maylasian quarter .

$14.50 for 2 pax with a fresh lime drink.

Gotta love going from TPR to a big budget show like that.

Much walking then Marina Bay Gardens and a visit to Skypark on top of Marina Bay Sands hotel for a couple of cold beers and night lights

$20 cab back to F class check in , another shower, AFF post and dinner next

Lobster double for me ;)

Plus 1 always lobster as she preferred teh 8 oz on the flight
