SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Just scored a J redemption for Tuesday next week LHR - SYD. Not sure what to expect!

Plenty of trip reports out there on the web.

Select yourself a seat, book the cook if you fancy anything. SQ has solid service and good alcohol. Food is ok without being outstanding. The seats aren't everyone's cup of tea. BYO PJs and in-flight amenities (amenity kits aren't provided but you'll get eye-masks and can request ear plugs. WCs are stocked with everything else).

Flying MEL-SIN-ZRH next week in J for the first time. Trying to sort out meals booking and dont really understand what we're in for.

If I dont book the cook - what is generally available?

If I book the cook, are other options still available in flight? Is it the same as if I book the cook?

Mrs tizey is not a good flyer and generally is incredibly picky in terms of food (last time MEL-ZRH, didnt eat or drink for 24hrs and was physically sick when she landed and I picked her up from the airport). She's literally thinking of booking kids meals as it being easier to stomach as an anxious flyer - I just want to be able to tell her 'if you dont book the cook, this is what you're likely in for, or if you book the cook, you still have other options'

Thanks in advance :)

By all means have a look at the options for book the cook - they are available on line on the SQ site. But you're probably going to be better off with a 'special' meal - one of the selections for dietary requirements. You can order bland food, or low sodium, or maybe even regular vegetarian... something lighter which will be easy to digest. The full range of special meals is also available on the website.

You can book the cook and - if you don't care for it at the time - choose something else from the menu... but there are no guarantees that 'something else' will be available if it is a full flight and other passengers who have not booked the cook make their selections. The regular menu will have your standard fish/beef/chicken in various forms, with at least one usually being Asian inspired and one western.

The beverage menu cannot be selected in advance but there is a comprehensive range of fruit drinks, soft drinks, water, and an extensive tea and coffee selection contained in the menu.

tizey as MEL suggested go online and BTC something very simple that the 'darl' can stomach if you can. When you board seek out the IFS (In Flight Supervisor) and explain your much better half's situation - I guarantee you the Singapore Girls will look after her like a 'motherless foal'.

And pls do report back as to your experience - sharing is caring.

80,750 points.

I've done Etihad J a few times but my first time on SQ ever! looking forward to it. 777-300 and then the A380.

Well done, that is a good redemption rate considering the short notice. I have not flown Etihad so cannot compare but I have not been disappointed flying SQ J. I'd be looking forward to it as well. Please report your experience, it will be interesting to hear a comparison.

Thanks for the advice guys Cruiser & MEL - really appreciate it and will report back. Hadn't thought about having a brief word to the IFS on the plane either, so thanks very much for that advice.

Its not so much 'dietary' requirements like bland/sodium/vego, but rather an option that is stomachable with really bad flight anxiety. I'm hoping the 'wow' factor of Singapore J class put a lot of the stress of flying away, and the 19hr layover in Singapore makes a big difference rather than doing the whole trip in Y with only a few hours break in Dubai like last time.

My two cents worth having just returned from an F round trip to Delhi and back from Hong Kong, with a B777 and A380 leg both ways.

B777 old config. I liked it for day flight, just sitting, watching IFE etc, but I strongly dislike the bed. Its wide enough, but too firm for me and I don't like the feet tucked up under the screen in a 'well'. There are no personal air blowers, and the cabin was uncomfortably warm (all 3 pax in F were sleeping, or trying to sleep without blankets on). They did turn the temp down when I asked, but I still couldn't get any sleep (but I am a bad sleeper on planes). Great service, food and wines of course. Personally, I would actively avoid this product for future overnight flights (if I was lucky enough to afford the point redemption :) ) Bathrooms are small.

A380 suites. Great product. Much more comfortable bed than B777. Service, food and wines great; bathrooms not much bigger than B777. Overall, as good as its reputation.

I'd rate the Emirates suite hard product ahead of the SQ suite (beds about equal, but there is that shower .and enormous bathrooms ....); SQ service and wines well ahead of EK though.

I'd rate QF F ahead of the SQ F old config, but again, SQ wins the service and food category.

EY apartment streets everyone, of course.

RF I usually go the red wine to get off into the land of nod when I fly on SQ. I have to use a Resmed sleep machine to avoid snoring and an eye mask to stay asleep.

It was fantastic to catch up to you on TPR and out at bar if F Rooey - I wish I could find an AFF cobber every visit there to chew the fat with - just a couple of observations on your post.

It is certainly not unusual for SQ cabins to be quite warm to unbearably hot at first - just remember almost ALL SQ crew are either Singaporeans or from nearby Asian countries - HOT is normal to them so they do not notice a hot cabin most times. If you do feel a hot cabin just tell the IFS and they will readily adjust the temp - I do this regularly..
Bathrooms are small.
Agree wholeheartedly - not just small but ridiculously small.
A380 suites. Great product.................bathrooms not much bigger than B777..
Indeed the 2 bathrooms in R are al least twice the size of bathrooms on any 777 - the bathroom in A Row is larger than the bathroom in F Row - just another reason to always select 3C as the best seat in the house. Rooey you are no bigger than me - the day you or I find SQ R bathrooms too small is the day you and I best hit the pavements mate.
I'd rate the Emirates suite hard product ahead of the SQ suite (beds about equal, but there is that shower .and enormous bathrooms ....)
Yes EK has a shower - but that is the end of EK F's superiority over SQ R IMHO - the plastic bling of EK is bordering on vomitous - and as we discussed in TPR factor in the pts cost for rdpts EK F v SQ R - now remind me again which one is superior? What's that you say cove?Don't forget the Krug and Dom v the Dom only - that would be childish cove.
EY apartment streets everyone, of course.
Except for the EY bed being like a slab of marble as you noted the other night - oh and flying backwards - some can never tolerate that.

But anyways - please don't think this is a SQ R better than any other / miner is bigger than yours post - F is F on all carriers and ALL carriers have points of difference that in some ways are superior to other carriers - eg - I rate TG F on 380 superior hard product than EK F - personal opinion only - but anyways long may availability to F travel on pts live - look how much fun it gives us all.

Interesting post on ViewFromTheWing:
And reasonably accurate also - but one point for AFFers to keep in mind - there is a limit to the number of 'Chasers' that KF call staff will send off on your behalf - don't think you can WL 10 diff flts and call them daily asking for 'Chasers' to be sent off - you will be politely told 'No problem Sir / Madam - I will do this for you' - but in reality it will not happen.

Call ctr staff can pretty readily read pax booking intentions - if they see 1 or 2 bookings and can see pax genuinely seeking conf for a particular flt they will readily assist - scattergun approaches seeking multiple 'Chasers' doers not endear you to KF call ctr staff.

This latest time we stopped both ways at Crowne Plaza Changi Singapore for the night. This splits up the travel time when doing the US run.

How close to travel should one be sending off these chasers?
No set time frame - I have MEL-SIN-ZRH conf for late Aug 2017 - I have had KF send off Chaser twice already - will ask again late Jan or Feb - just play it by ear. Sending Chasers absolutely no guarantee of forcing conf - release of award inventory totally up to yield management team at back end - they march to the beat of their own drum.
