SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

What are the ins and outs of wait listing awards? Currently looking at 4 Y awards ADL-SIN at the saver level. Waitlist is option for the preferred travel day, but 4 awards are available on the following day.
Any tips on how to deal with this situation - wait list and wait (when do they determine the wait list?) or wait list and book the following day as well?

I have no kris flyer status.

Depends how flexible you are/how much you want confirmed travel plans. If you definitely want to be flying, I would book the non-preferred date and waitlist the preferred date, but reasonably expect to be travelling on the non-preferred date. Clearing waitlists can't be predicted. There seems to be no definite pattern.

As a data point, I had a F waitlist recently two weeks prior to departure. But other people have reported day before/day of.

Thanks. Exactly the info I wanted. I'll have to change a couple of other bookings if we travel on the non-preferred date. Better to just bite the bullet.

Just another gold star for the SQ customer service machine.:)

I had to cancel at the very last minute ( 4 hours prior to departure) a LHR MEL Suite/F redemption . Despite my best efforts I could not get thru to Krisflyer, in any country , But managed to contact the ticketing counter in LHR. They put on the system that I would not be a no show for the flight and sent an internal email to Krisflyer, no promises of points refund etc but didn't think it should be a problem . I was not so calm as it was a standard redemption so nearly a quarter of a million points hanging in the balance :shock:. On return to Aus I contacted Krisflyer, they had received the email from LHR, apologised for the difficulty I had in getting thru to krisflyer and said points and tax refund would take place within 7 days .
On an unrelated note I was delayed in GVA 21 hours on an EY flight . The travel insurance need an airline letter stating the delay time and reason before paying out on travel delay. we are now 5 weeks after the delayed flight and still no letter from EY despite multiple emails to different departments and contacting the EY reps both here and on FT . No gold star for the EY customer service machine , that's of course assuming one actually exists:shock:

Apologies for OT - did you get your EU compensation? That might provide you with the evidence you need for travel insurance. (Maybe that's why EY won't come out with a statement - it would provide the evidence you need for your EU claim!)

I've never claimed one of these before. EY were fine with accommodation, not so great on food only one meal! Just had a quick scan of the rules. EY changed the flight number of the rescheduled plane. Does that mean they cancelled the original flight? And does that affect the claim?
And there was certainly none of this at checkin

Article 14 Obligation to inform passengers of their rights 1. The operating air carrier shall ensure that at check-in a clearly legible notice containing the following text is displayed in a manner clearly visible to passengers: "If you are denied boarding or if your flight is cancelled or delayed for at least two hours, ask at the check-in counter or boarding gate for the text stating your rights, particularly with regard to compensation and assistance".
2. An operating air carrier denying boarding or cancelling a flight shall provide each passenger affected with a written notice setting out the rules for compensation and assistance in line with this Regulation. It shall also provide each passenger affected by a delay of at least two hours with an equivalent notice. The contact details of the national designated body referred to in Article 16 shall also be given to the passenger in written form.

I might download the form tonight . Thank you for the heads up

It's either a cancellation or a delay (in fact the court has ruled delays over a certain time = cancellation anyway, so pretty much same same). Renumbering of flight makes no difference. I wouldn't focus on the lack of information at the check-in desk, but rater the claim for delay itself. The hotel and food they are required to provide by law anyway, they cannot take those out of your compensation package.

The only time EU doesn't work is if the flight change is more than 2 weeks prior to departure.

Just had another thought. Is GVA covered by this . I know its half swiss and half French but we checked in on the swiss side?

Opps just found out the answer is yes all covered

As Waitlist clearance is a hit & miss affairs and therefore cannot be relied on unless you have confirmed alternative.

The non-preferred available flights should be taken up unless they are 100% unsuitable. Once the Waitlist is cleared, it is a simple matter to swap one for the other without fee IIRC.

Would you please provide the relevant link to documentation regarding this claim for delayed/cancelled flight for the benefit of all posters rather than talk in a cloud? :)

Changing confirmed flts to WL flts has now changed - previously you could simply conf a flt and WL another on diff Booking Ref No. - then if WL cleared cancel original and conf 2nd booking in place of original booking. This was in reality substitution of 2nd waitlisted booking for award space allocated to your original booking.

It is now only under extreme circumstances where this is permitted - now if you want to WL diff flts / sectors and change original booking if they clear you need to call KF and ask them add WL to your original booking - then you can change / substitute original booking and still retain access to your original award inventory.

As soon as you cancel original booking that stock goes back into award inventory stock and your 2nd booking may now not be next in line for said award inventory. I am not explaining this that well am I - but hope you get the idea.

As legroom posted no charge to achieve this if stars align.

EU261. Switzerland is a party to it, so it doesn't matter if you checked-in in Switzerland or France.

Means more award availability as people cannot tie up award stock with multiple bookings whilst waiting for their preferred booking to appear?
Not exactly - WLs are only queued awaiting award stock availability - no stock actually take up until WL clears and booking conf.

How long does a waitlisted seat remain open to accept once it becomes available to you?
Depends a bit on lead time to dep - but as dd posted usually 3 days or so - you can call and get TTL (ticketing time limit) extended - they mostly ask for reason why - awaiting medical clearance from Doctor so you can fly will usually get you over the line.

Sorry Prozac. Yes my head was not quite there this morning, I had just written another rant to EY.

All EU countries covered.
Although these countries are not in the EU, the rules still apply to them.

Thank you MEL_traveller for the guidance today :)
Good information here with sample letters to send to the airlines and also info on how they try to wriggle out of paying
