re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Will look out or text you when we get there...probably just after 12 noon

I should be there well before 12, whether I am successful in checking in early or not will be another matter.

Indeed I am, but with the great weather in Sydney I am considering changing to a Sunday flight and skipping the F lounge.....

If you do fly, let us know - would be good to put another face to the handle. If not, enjoy SYD :)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Given there are no JQi flights back to MEL on Sunday, and this trip was to sample the SYD F lounge again, I'll be there tomorrow for sure!

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

An impromptu F lounge AFF meet was had:)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

For the benefit of future readers, my experience was identical - no check-in counters open, but the service desk people were happy to check us in with HLO.

Was this at MEL or SYD? Which flight number were you on and what time did you get the service desk staff to check you in if you don't mind sharing?

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Earlier this month I rocked up at the MEL JQ check-in when they were open for the SIN flight.
The CSO would not check me in for my SYD flight despite me asking nicely and letting her knowI had HLO and I didn't have a problem in SYD two days before.
She said that I would have to come back 3 hours before my flight, as they may get a lot of last minute SIN passengers. About four counters were open with nobody at them, or in the queue. But she was not going to budge!

The shame of it - we had to sit in the terminal with everyone else for about an hour and how the time dragged .

And wouldn't you know it, we got the same 'so and so' when we checked in and she was sickly sweet to us.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

how did the service desk check-in option go?
I got to the J* checkin @Syd at T-3 hrs and checked in then. Got to the F lounge 15 mins later. The other AFFers came earlier and tried the QF lounges and the J* service desk but to no avail sadly...still we had a good 2.5 hrs in the F lounge, and we boarded at the final, final call:)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

I am on QF CBR - SYD, and then JQ SYD - HNL on different PNRs.

Would I be able to check in luggage in CBR to HNL and then head straight into the QF J lounge in SYD on a guest pass?

Please say yes this should work just fine.

The FAQs released by Qantas on 3 November 2010 say yes, irrespective of the different PNRs.

If you ever try again, try the JQi service desk - I'm 2 from 2 when asking there.

As noted just above I've been successful asking at the JQi service desk in MEL twice.

The first was July 2012, after checking in for a QF flight MEL-SYD, from which we were connecting onto JQ37 SYD-DPS. So, many hours before (maybe 6?), for a JQi flight departing from a different city, and with checked bags (which had already been checked through MEL-xSYD-DPS at QF checkin though) :-)

The second was February this year, for JQ2 MEL-SYD. IIRC it was about 3.5 hours before the flight. HLO this time.

Just to add a "real world" experience to what the FAQ says, as mentioned above I had no problem checking bags MEL-xSYD-DPS with the MEL-xSYD on QF and the xSYD-DPS on JQi. So, yes, it will work fine.

Awesome, thanks.

Where is the JQi service desk at MEL T2? I'm guessing around #62 in this map below?

While we're at it, where is it in SYD T1?

.
Did not work at JQi service desk in Syd yesterday for a couple of AFFers unfortunately :(

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

#62 is the QF service desk.

The MEL JQi service desk is just below #54, to the right of the square T2 label.

I don't know where the SYD one is.

Awesome, thanks.

IIRC, #62 is a shop (ditto the whole strips 48 - 52 and 60-65).

I've spent surprisingly little time at MEL T2 for someone who flies a lot and lives in MEL so I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure the JQi service desk has been located in the middle of checkin counters 200-227 (i.e. directly below the shop labelled 54 on the map, top-centre) both times I've been there. It's actually a desk that "sticks out" and separates checkin 200-213 and checkin 214-227 - in both cases it's been on the 200-213 side, as those checkin counters were being used for JQi flights. Note I say "has been located" as it was really no more than a sign and a couple of computers behind a desk, so it's possible it may move around if the JQi checkin counters likewise move.

Don't stress about it too much though, it's not hard to find - not sure how familiar you are with MEL T2 landside, but it's not that big, and quite open. Much easier to navigate than SYD international landside.

While we're at it, where is it in SYD T1?

Can't help you here, sorry - the whole point of getting my BPs in MEL for the MEL-xSYD-DPS was so that I could avoid anything JQi-related in SYD (other than the plane to DPS, of course!) :-)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Did not work at JQi service desk in Syd yesterday for a couple of AFFers unfortunately :(

Bugger :-( On both occasion in MEL the staff didn't even blink an eye - more than happy to help. Maybe the staff in MEL are "nicer"... or maybe I just got lucky.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Thanks everyone!

kpc, where was the JQi service desk in SYD where you and some other AFFers got knocked back? What did they actually say? :(

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

My understanding is the JQi service desk is just located next to the normal check-in counters ? Which is un-staffed except for when flights are departing (3 hours beforehand)

My F lounge run on Saturday went well, had to wait 1 hour for the check-in to open.. As it turns out I had to line up behind a few other AFF's :)

I just missed the earlier AKL flight by about 10 mins, as I may have been able to check in for the MEL flight when the desks were open.

Another good F lounge breakfast/lunch :)
