re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

If you go to the service desk first they may say no. If you go to the check-in counter first they may direct you to the service desk if they can't help you so I would suggest that first, unless there is quite a queue.

Good thinking - thanks.

Just to save those having to read the last 241 posts, here is a simple process of how to get boarding passes early. Keep asking JQ staff until one says yes.

Sorry, your flow chart is incomplete - you didn't include all the steps involving asking QF staff to check you in and them refusing "because Jetstar is a different airline*".

* "unless it suits us to think otherwise"

Sorry, I just didn't want to make things to complicated.

The above statement implies that QF staff are at liberty to choose whether they can issue JQ boarding passes on a whim which is not correct.

QF use Altea to checkin & Jetstar use Navitaire so neither airline can access the other airlines system. Asking a QF CSA to check you in for a JQd or JQi flight (in isolation) would be just like asking them to check you in on VA flight as they physically cannot access the JQ checkin system.

The only exception would be when QF are appointed as the ground handling agent for JQ in a port and are doing the checkin for the JQi flights so would have sign-ons codes in order to access the JQ system as the checkin would be done in the JQ Navitaire system eg QF at BNE Intl used to do JQi checkin when JQ flew ex BNE trans-Tasman.

I understand that some QF Clubs do have access to a JQ system for the purpose of checking in pax on JQ Domestic flights (not international A330 flights) departing from that same port. JQ have requested them to only check pax in on those flights departing within 2 hours and is in line with their own checkin policy at the airport where you cannot checkin more than 2 hours ahead of your flight departure. Of course you can OLCI & mobile checkin at T-48 however you cannot drop off checked luggage until 2 hours before.

I imagine it would be JQ Ops who would be responsible for opening a flight for checkin so QP's around Australia would only be able to check pax in once the flight has been opened as it's not something they have control over.

A QF CSA may in some cases be able to generate a boarding pass for a JQi flight if preceeded by a QF flight by virtue of the fact that QF have an IATCI (inter airline through checkin) agreement with JQ just as they do with certain other airlines. Below are examples of such scenarios but note that they do not involve checking in to that airlines own system as all boarding passes are generated back to Altea.

MEL QF CNS JQ NRT
BNE QF DRW JQ DPS
ADL QF SYD JQ HKT
PER QF SYD JQ HNL
HBA QF SYD LA SCL LA GRU
DRW QF PER SA JNB SA CPT
ASP QF ADL EK DXB EK CDG
CNS QF BNE SQ SIN SQ TPE

IMHO whether you receive a JQ boarding pass in the above scenarios depends on the link being up between the QF & JQ systems at the moment you checkin. If you don't receive a JQ boarding pass at this time I believe you still show as having been checked in in the JQ system however the end result is with no JQ boarding pass you still need to acquire this prior to clearing customs at the city where you are boarding the JQ flight & hence the 'fun' begins.

I have only done one JQi flight within Australia and in this instance it was preceeded by a QF flight all in the same QF pnr using the multi-city tool for an ASA. BNE/SYD was a JASA & SYD/MEL was based on a Starter fare. I was able to OLCI & print out both boarding passes ie for QF8 & JQ35 - it's a good idea to save the boarding passes as a pdf doc as you only get one chance to print it out.

Other AFFers in the group who had booked the JQ35 flight totally separately via the JQ website were able to attempt OLCI (as this was permitted 18 months ago for JQi flights) & when they approached JQ staff at BNE Dom terminal they said "oh all of you are showing as having checked in already" so were happy to reprint the boarding passes. We attached our own orange 'D' stickers.

Firstly, my comment was made with tongue firmly in cheek...

Secondly, I'm aware that it's not simply at the discretion of QF staff as to when they can issue JQ boarding passes or not. My comment was a reference to repeated tales earlier in this thread of pax having mixed successes / failures obtaining JQ boarding passes at the same QF check-in counters (normally F check-in) / QCs / J lounges. Perhaps there were other factors in play which I'm not aware of, that caused the inconsistencies - but again, it was a joke, poking fun at the general inconsistency in how QF regard JQ - either as part of the same group, or a completely seperare airline, as and when it suits them - in many areas, not just this one.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

This thread amazes me. The amount of ideas generated in order to get an extra hour or two in the lounge when flying on a discount domestic fare. Check in normally 3 hours before and you will have plenty of time to relax, enjoy a meal and a few drinks in the lounge. Its already great value you don't have to abuse the benefit and waste the time of staff trying numerous ways to beat the system.

Problem being that check in is never 3 hours before, and boarding is normally called early for these flights, throw in the fact they often depart when there are big lines for security and customs and you would be lucky to get an hour, so at times every minute counts, thats based on personal experience when JQ35 was around and trips were on weekends, its a little different now compared to the situation when the thread was created.

an hour? That's not been the case the last few times I have done it. My last 4 flights I checked in right on 3 hours beforehand. Through to the lounge within 20 minutes, sometimes within 10. At least 2 full hours available in lounge. That is plenty for lunch and many glasses of champagne.

Everyone will be different, I think the thread was started after a heap of AFFers spent exactly that long in the lounge as part of a do! "There must be a better way" was the cry heard and challenge made :)

That's the absolute maximum.

It's OK being at the front of the queue, but often they don't start checkin for 5 to 10 minutes.

At least it's better than the early days when I once had to wait 30 minutes for check-in to open (& I was in StarClass).

Beating the system is part of the QFF game.

It becomes an addiction after a while...

For me though, as nice as the F lounge is, I still prefer the normal domestic flights, where I can OLCI, and turn up somewhat late-ish and simply walk onto the plane 15min before departure.

More seats to be wined and dined for the rest of us then. :D

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

An update to my recent JQ36/35 trip.

At MEL, check-in opened at 6am for a 9am departure. There were some staff members at the service desk just before 6am but I was waiting for my friend. I doubt there would have been anyone there much earlier.

At SYD, a couple of staff were at the [unmarked] JQi service desk when we got there just before T-3 (~11.45/50am for a 12 noon check-in and 3pm departure). Even when asking to check us in even with HLO they said they will opening in 10 or so minutes.

The service desk is at the front end of counter J in SYD T1. See the map in my earlier post (#214) for the location; here is a photo of the desk taken from the queue.

Here is the MEL one while I'm at it.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Sorry I have to bring up a new thread. Will be taking JQ35 this coming Sunday, am I right in assuming that OLCI no longer exists and I have to queue (#firstworldproblem)??? Also, Do we need to queue at immigration or can we use the express lane? Further, we are only doing the SYD-MEL sector, I should have really just booked the business class for the asking price, but TT's price match was irresistible. Any ODU or can we call to ask for discount upgrade to Business (*Class)? Comments/ help appreciated.

Been nearly 1.5 years since I set foot in the First lounge so really looking forward to it.

You are correct in hat you will to have check in in person as there is no OLCI for international flights. Unless you are traveling in J there is no express pass offered, so you will have to queue with the great unwashed! I have not tried for an ODU so can't answer that, but would question the worth for a flight of little over an hour. And with a few hours in the F lounge, JQ is not that bad. ;)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Not that I'd consider it... But has anyone ever considered "accidentally missing" the JQ flight and thus never actually leaving SYD? I guess by the same argument... Waiting until close to boarding time and then telling the F Lounge staff that you're no longer able to travel for some reason.

Not really sure how it would work having to leave the airside area at T1.

See this thread about my experiences on missing an international J* flight....not deliberate tho!!
