re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

My F lounge run on Saturday went well, had to wait 1 hour for the check-in to open.. As it turns out I had to line up behind a few other AFF's :)

How does that work? You arrrived before us and still lined up behind us? :p:p

PS it was good to meet you :)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

The shame of it - we had to sit in the terminal with everyone else for about an hour and how the time dragged .

In those situations MEL is far superiour to SYD as you can easily walk to T1 or T3 and use your non-existent ATA :p

Although in practice you do have access to the QF lounge in the wrong terminal as you are flying QF or JQ for your NEXT ONWARD FLIGHT, ON THAT DAY.

Was quietly sitting just across from the counters, as I didn't want to be "that person" who was 1st in line :p:p As soon as I saw a few others line up at about 11:50 I walked over..

Yep, was good to enjoy a few ports/wines together I must agree  shame I had to drive home from MEL....

I was surprised how many domestic passengers there were, especially at 11:50.

If it wasn't obvious, I wasn't driving home (until much later that day)...

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

I have had a hit rate of 0 from dozens every time i've tried to check in with HLO at JQi service desks. I've always been told "we cannot do it you must wait till the flight opens" and when i've mentioned I know people who have done it, I was basically told I was lying as they cannot do it.

I did once, doing a same-day return, have the JQi MEL check-in staff issue me my SYD-MEL BP too. Two weeks later, I was told an emphatic 'no we cannot' when I asked to do the same thing.

And I thought QF Mainline staff were inconsistent!

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

So to clarify, on Saturday we tried the following (in order), all of which failed:
SYD T3 J Lounge
SYD T2 QP
SYD T2 JQ Service Desk
SYD T1 JQ Service Desk (when staffed just before check in opened)

We lined up at 11:50 and check-in opened a couple minutes early. It was about 12 by the time we started walking through the terminal.

I've had a 100% hit rate at T2 QP, when asked nicely (And bribed with chocolates on occasion ;)). Of course, with QF Link moving to T3, I'm assuming that QP will be closing in the near future, so no more.

Given such reports, I was quite surprised.

However the staff were adiment that they wouldn't do it, despite pulling the 'they did it here last time' line with a big smile and a slightly confused look.

It may have just been bad luck that the two people on the desk didn't really know much about "the JQ system".

I got to the J* checkin @Syd at T-3 hrs and checked in then. Got to the F lounge 15 mins later
We only got to the F lounge 10 or so minutes after you....

Every time it was printed on QF stock, and then at the boarding gate, they'd give me a JQ boarding pass (even though the QF stock had the D sticker and stamp, which I had to use at the other end). JQ are weird!

Previously you could checkin online for JQi flights, and then it was only a matter of reprinting the BP and attaching the "D" sticker. Now you cannot OLCI for JQi, and I wonder if this is the reason why the J* service desk can't issue the JQi BPs as before..

I can't believe I forgot about ATA - we have used it in the past when we were unable to check in early for an AKL flight (had checked luggage).
Thanks for the reminder

You mean you forgot about "no-ATA".

;)

Definitely not the case - as mentioned a page or two back, MEL JQi service desk checked a friend and I in, HLO, back in Feb 2013 (well after the switch to not being able to check-in online).

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

OK, time for me to ask a question instead of answering them:

Just booked a somewhat impromptu F lounge run with a friend as part of an otherwise necessary trip MEL-SYD. The flight is JQ30, departing at 12.00pm on a Friday out of MEL. Looking at the Melbourne Airport website, it appears that if we arrive ~4 hours before our flight (the plan), JQi check-in will already be open for JQ7 MEL-SIN, which departs at 11.00am.

In this scenario - when the JQi check-in counters are already open, but for a different flight - what is the recommended procedure to check-in and obtain BPs early? Try to check-in at the check-in counters? Or ask at the service desk?

Thanks.

It will be up to the check in agent's discretion. It will be easier if you are HLO as they may say that the flight is not able to receive luggage more than three hours beforehand.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

I tried to check in at the BNE J lounge in the morning (8:30am ish) for my first F lounge run last Thursday. The very helpful service desk staff member was keen to do it, as she wanted to have more experience accessing the J* system. Despite being keen, she was not able to as the flight was not open for check in.
I queued with the other F Lounge runners at 12:00 in SYD and was checked in almost on the dot of midday.

That said first visit... WOW! Thanks to all here at AFF for the knowledge to be able to do this you are all v . I raised by first glass of Taittinger to you.

There's that consistently inconsistent QF service! Glad the F lounge could help you :)

Thanks for the info. We will be HLO, so that will make it easier. That said, in this situation would you recommend approaching the check-in counters, or the service desk?

If you go to the service desk first they may say no. If you go to the check-in counter first they may direct you to the service desk if they can't help you so I would suggest that first, unless there is quite a queue.
