Terrorist attacks in Paris

Borders are not closed, but ID checks are being made.

When I heard that the borders were closing, my understanding was not that no one goes in or out of the country. As you say, it is just that ID checks are being made.

This is a temporary measure which is allowed under certain conditions with respect to the Schengen agreement, which would otherwise grant free passage between member states.

This, of course, will considerably lengthen the times required for any border crossings, including trains and airports. The former may be particularly difficult as (1) border control staff / police would need to scrambled into position to account for the checking requirements, and (2) barriers and other infrastructure may need to be constructed hastily at facilities which are not normally required to have such controls.

In Switzerland, the border at the Canton (and city) of Geneva is going to get very interesting.

If you read further at some crossings it is ID checks,at others ID checks if entering but no one allowed out and others closed.
It is no wonder though. What a massive operation it would be to really close France's borders.

Risks with climate conference shortly in Paris where world leaders inc. Turnbull are to be attending.

That is most likely EXACTLY why it was organised for Friday 13th - now.

The security is always ramped up exponentially (before this happened) when there's multiple Govts involved. This was purely done on the 13th for marketing purposes.

It may have been talked about previously, and I missed it, but I don't think so.

How many of you thought about 9/11's significance?

What is the emergency phone number in the US?

911.

Perhaps the link was purposely never made by the US media, who knows.

Unfortunately I've heard on the TV and radio, since this morning, the reporters using the line "a bad Friday the 13th", "a true Friday the 13th" and "that's what we should expect on Friday the 13th."

This is done for publicity - starve them of it - do not feed them.

If you talk about it with people, think about this, and refer to it as something else - don't create their advertising for them.

We cannot let these lunatics ruin our lives . Utter cowards they are .
Tis true, but it's little comfort for those affected. I can't but help somewhat vulnerable walking through Martin Place now. Sad.

this is what the human race has created on planet earth... hate/death/destruction has been part of the human condition since day 'dot'!! And as we pass through the generations they/we all do our best to 'fix' it!! conflict/hate/war IS A MONEY MAKING BUSINESS...yes, we all get outraged...but NOTHING WILL REALLY CHANGE...Humans will continue to kill planet earth.. so I just choose to live my life as best I can without hurting others....I know it sounds very simplistic..I sleep better at night :) ....."we all just flow from one self induced crises to another"... That sums up the human race:shock:

Appeasement isn't the solution either.
The terror group involved ( I will not dignify them by using their name) like many /most want a universal Islamic state. We all know they don't represent the majority view, but frankly I can see tie (and other actions) fuelling other extremists views that are equally vile , even if they are polar opposite. To kill someone because they give offence is absurd, petulant and vile. I cannot even begin to adequately provide a description of how evil this is.

Not so long ago there were two incidents that struck me as 'odd' - intolerance to tolerance

1) Father strangling his own UK-born daughter as she refused an arranged marriage. Instead, she dared to have a 'foreign' boyfriend

2) Brother (a lawyer) shooting dead his sister who was in court for running away with a non-desirable from another village

That intolerance lies at the root of all the hatred.

Funny how all the holy 'Warriors' always select defenseless targets - the unarmed concertgoers, café guests, newspaper cartoonists etc ....

I did think what Charlie Hebdo did was like poking a bear. I am not religious and whatever a person's religious practices are, they are sacred to them and should not be publicly mocked. Of course I am in no way condoning the repercussions.

Sort of half agreeing with you there.

Should not be mocked but once irreverently done by cartoonists (whose mocking is their profession), the responses (outrage, demonstrations, fatwa, Charlie Hebo attack, Van Gogh murder etc ....) have been way disproportionate.

Instead of ignoring or responses in kind (mocking, cartoons, letters etc ...), they choose bullets instead.

Mind you, bullets are not the preferred way - decapitation by masked men is.

Mindless destruction hiding behind the banner of religion - that's what it is.

The following is a long article, and will not be for everyone. But it gives a very interesting view of what is driving IS:

Amazing the media and political coverage of France versus Lebanon where over 40 were also killed overnight

I am part Lebanese but I don't have a problem with the difference in coverage. There are so many deaths and you are never affected equally. I have been to Paris, I haven't been to the Lebanon. The terrorist attacks in Kenya really upset me, because I was there last year and just loved the people. Just natural really.

I also will not let the current state of the world stop me from travelling. Terrorism only succeeds if they stop people from doing what they would normally do. So screw Daesh and their affiliates - I will stay in Nairobi again, I will travel to Europe. I went to Turkey earlier in the year.

Thanks for this. An interesting article with good background. The followup articles are also worth the read.
Shame isn't it that Australian media just cannot produce nor support proper journalism that can offer researched in depth articles such as this.

Need a coalition of at least half a million in Syria and Iraq.

I also like Quinn's battle plan.

This is the inevitable consequence of cultural relativism and open borders lunacy. We must never forget that Australia's most idiotic senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, used taxpayer dollars to go to the Mediterranean to actively assist the people-smugglers who brought unidentifiable masses from militant zones despite ISIS warnings that they were sending terrorists into Europe disguised as "refugees".

Hanson-Young and the EU elites like Merkel and Juncker have blood on their hands.

I expect this naivety from Hanson-Young but I was quite surprised by Merkel's actions over the last few months. She always seemed to be fairly sensible.
It's only going to get worse sadly.

I was at an international conference today where the French speaker ended her presentation with a 'thank you' note for the support France received in the last few days.

The whole auditorium gave her a good 1-2 min of hand clapping.

It's naturelle that we identify more with France than with the terrible kidnapping by Boko Haram or suicide bombing in Baghdad or senseless killings in Aleppo .....

It's cultural based to identify yourself with 'similar'.
