The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Given they were in a priority list and trumpeted as such by our PM this vaccination rate is pathetic, as is anyone who tries to persuade it us it is tremendous. Though I'm sure some rusted on supporters on this thread will try and convince us otherwise.

I think all the disadvantaged priority groups have been done way too slowly including the aged and disabled. Indeed disability is way, way behind.

I felt really angry today watching Scomo grinning and whooping about how well the vaccination program was going.

If he'd been standing up there 3 months ago doing that routine it would've been very different.

Ignore the politicians (well, the vast majority).

The indigenous community was unfortunately subject to a LOT of misinformation and anti vax types telling all sorts of bullshit stories about side effects.

The increased supply of Pfizer to Vic State Hubs, combined with the opening up of AZ to 18+ at the state hubs which both came into effect today achieved a large increase in doses there. The GP and pharmac_ Channel supply in Vic remains constrained though.

Yes, agree but I thought that pretty much went without saying! I thought the aged and disability figures had just crept past 50% (first dose) but looking at them today have dropped below 50% again, despite all the known problems in these sectors. Doubly pathetic.

Yeah I knew this but that's exactly why the Feds should have had a proactive campaign to counter this rubbish. Unfortunately missing in action again.

Is that VIC number real? That is absolutely huge..... Good on the younger Victorians coming out in force if so!

Will be AZ plus also extra Pfizer as the Commonwealth like for NSW (though a lot less) and Qld have allowed some doses from Sept to be brought forward. That started arriving on Friday and so will cause a kick up as off today.

Dan announced last week for State Hubs that he wanted the State Hubs to do a million does in 5 weeks. So 45,000 yesterday is in front of that. They could do a lot more, but do not have the supply.

Though yesterday being Day One for 18+ at the State Hubs it probably would mean that bookings at least this week should be on the busy side.

They did. Trust of government is not exactly high in remote indigenous communities, you know.

I wonder if surge in Victoria's number from the state clinics is because of the 900 odd does they apparently did on Sunday? Might not have the uploaded the Sunday doses to the immunisation register on Monday. Any does is a good thing right now

70% of 60-64 year olds have had their first dose (the last 60+ age group to reach this milestone), and also is the first 5 year age group in Australia to go past 1 million first doses.

75.1% of 65-69 year olds have had their first dose.

49.9% of 70-74 year olds are fully vaccinated.

Yes my young friend is going crazy with all the nonsense anti vax stuff her relatives (indigenous) are telling her.

I am still having trouble with the numbers from the AIR. Apparently ACT did over 9,000 yesterday. Just not feasible.

Next up....boosters...much broader than originally discussed. USA is focused on Moderna/Pfizer/J&J - no mention of AZ as the USA is not using AZ. When it is time here (sounds like post 8 months), I do hope this is treated as a race and not a stroll in the park.

So we give kudos to ineffective actions these days?
Not at all. I wish things were better. But there is a long and storied history of our governments failing our indigenous population. To pretend that low vaccination rates is a reflection of poor government efforts to communicate the benefits is to overlook or deny the centuries of neglect that mean this population by and large don't trust the government, no matter how big the stakes.

We have a lot of connections with indigenous communities and there has been a tonne of religious and anti-vax communications that have undermined efforts to vaccinate them unfortunately.

It’s actually sick. These people should be hunted down and prosecuted if anyone is permanently disabled or killed in these vulnerable communities.

Totally agree - it’s close to manslaughter. My young friend is training as a doctor and they still believe the loonies instead of her. :(

Yeah, I agree they have stuffed up their relationship with the First Nations people full stop, but I’m not happy at the suggestion it’s their fault for lack of vaccination take up. Not that I’m suggesting you are explicitly saying that but it does seem implicit in some of the narrative.
