The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Are laptops allowed to be stowed in seat-back pockets on domestic? Sitting in 4D on a 737 and just witnessed a fairly heated argument between a pax and an FA - pax saying he’s a frequent flyer and he’s always been allowed to keep the laptop in the pocket, with 2 FAs saying it needs to be in the bin overhead. Descending now, and they made a deliberate move to come back to him and make sure he put it back overhead for landing.

Well live from the field, sitting in 4D now on QF645. CSM just walked by and I asked. It was a clear no, a laptop is too heavy.

More to the point, why argue with the crew. It's not a battle you're going to win.

No, not during takeoff and landing. Even a tablet with an attached case with keyboard out will be queried - but it's OK if you can fold away your keyboard.
https://www.qantas.com/au/en/qantas-experience/onboard/communication.html - refer to the bullets under "Using your personal electronic device in flight mode":
  • Secure hand-held devices by holding them or placing them in a seat pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Items heavier than 1kg such as laptops will still need to be stowed.
You could put the laptop under the seat in front, I had mine in my tote bag under the seat in front on the weekend. Although I didn't use it all in-flight, it was there for ease of going through security.

Mrs Excel will be 8 SCs short of WP qualification after an upcoming trip. We have a loyalty bonus we can cash in, but would prefer to hold it to next membership year. Has anyone seen recent reports of courtesy bumps?

Do classic upgrades disappear/become unavailable for some reasons?

My flight no longer accepts classic reward upgrade bids despite the option being available a week ago. I have commenced travel on the PNR and would've thought it would have no bearing on my return flight.

Bid cash+point is still open.

Worth calling. There was a “Gimme” for someone who was 1 or 2 SCs short.

Otherwise, is it possible to reroute via somewhere to get extra SCs?

I totally agree, just curious on what the policy is and whether it may have changed recently.
On all recent flights the FA has announced that laptops must go under the seat in front if in a case or in overhead bins for take-off and landing.

Only devices weighing less than 1kg can go in seat back pocket such as a phone or tablet - those that are small enough to also be allowed to be hand-held during take-off and landing, and use the seat back holder once the seat belt signis off.

This has been the case for as long as I can remember.

Hi there, anyone out there knows if Cathay Pacific is releasing J tickets for Qantas points redemption pls? I just can’t seem to find any J tickets on any route.
Thank you in advance,
Chris

Some of the QF 737s do not have seat back tablet holders.
Just smooth back of the leatherette seating.
Down the back in Y, of course.

Maybe on that particular flight, they have decided that the seats for CR has been fulfilled, and they want the rest to be majority rev/$.
Esp for CR into J.

Yes, they are. For example…

How many seats and how far out are you looking?

Might get in touch after the trip. Fortunately/unfortunately we have already maxed out this one, might write a tr on it actually - it should be a fun (albeit very long) day of domestic travel!

Ok I could put in the upgrade request on MMB but not on app. Guess more Qantas IT things.

A simple question after an empty search: do we have an RTW planning thread here (using OW alliance) for paid travel? We have the OW award planning thread but how about for paid tickets, please?

Not that I have seen
Well supported on FT oneworld - FlyerTalk Forums
Mainly by a PER based OW traveller.
OW web site--> Multi-City Flights: Round The World Airline Tickets - RTW

Some *ONE* threads here --> The online OW booking tools has many bugs and useless for many itineraries. If you have over water AA flights can book via the AA RTW desk

Sorry for the simple post - couldn’t find what I was looking for with the search.

What’s the go with bulkhead / first row blocks on QFi?

Flying QF12 in PE next week and entire bulkhead row is blocked (EF says blocked not allocated). Are they holding in case 7 P1 book last minute? As a WP, you’d think you’d be able to see and access at least some of these seats, especially a week out.. From memory, these are not all bassinet seats either.

Was this similar to the row4 changes a few years ago, leaving WP to pray for some t80 love and I just haven’t noticed?

More or less yes. Held for P1/CL and released at T-80.

Although row 31A/B , J/K are bassinet seat and I see that on my upcoming flight there are infants assigned to my QF2 at 31A (JL MMB).

Hi All

I have a booked and confirmed QFF Classic Reward (booked 12mths ago) in Business from Bologna > Dubai > Brisbane at the end of April for 2x pax on Emirates. They are on the same booking PNR (even though in Qantas they show as two separate legs - possibly because I booked it through the multi city and linked it up with a long stopover in DXB (10hrs)

It looks like there is First Class availability released pretty regularly 3-4 days before departure and I have enough points for the difference between Business and First.

Hypothetically, pending availability if I wanted to upgrade the second leg (or entire booking if thats more straight forward) with points to First Class is this possible and how do I do it?

I thought
a) Try to rebook the entire trip BOL > DXB > BNE a couple of days before (probably wont be able to do this because without cancelling the current award I won;t have points). Then cancel the existing booking.
b) try calling the QF contact centre to see if they can just upgrade/update the second leg and charge me the points difference
c) ask at EK counter in Bologna (probably unlikely)
d) Leave it and don't mess with my current business award booking. Getting back is more important than a leg in First Class if for some reason Qantas drops the booking or doesnt come through - tight schedule with 2-3days to sort out if anything goes wrong

I had a bit of a search on the net and I couldn't find an answer specific with my requirements.

Thanks so much for the help/advice.

Unfortunately you cannot request upgrades on Qantas classic Awards unless they are on Qantas flights.
Not possible for these Emirates flights.

EDIT: If availability appears in F you can call up and ask to be rebooked in First and pay the points difference
