Found out today that my job will be vanishing in the next couple of months. Lack of funding means the institute is 'missing' $2 million from its budget. Bit of a downer. Got a job interview Friday so fingers crossed!

Best of luck with that...hope it goes well!

And he would have been fine on this tour as well.

I cannot believe we are placing all our faith on 3 out of 4 top order batsmen averaging in the 30's and the other one just over 40 average.

Oh well. Hope something starts going right....

Interesting, if a little gloomy, article here re the Ashes prospects. Author suggests only two players (Clarke and Pattinson) guaranteed selection for 1st Ashes test.

I have never seen so many Oz fast bowlers break down until after they introduced the rest/rotation policy. I think our quick bowling stocks are actually pretty good if everyone is fit (I lament CJ McDermott's departure from the fast bowling coach position, he had them all doing the right thing), and Lyon is OK, not great, as a spinner (why on Earth did they drop him)?

He is unable to contain or take key wickets. I think 3/244 in first test was a worry. Not that the other 2 did any better in this test. They only took wickets when the Indians decided to attack more.

I cannot believe that for so long we had Warne and McGill fighting for the 1 spot in the team and now there isn't anyone.

Apparently the Byron Bay cookie company is facing closure after legal action pending from the ATO, not sure if the journalist is up to date with current events though:

Good Food - Byron Bay Cookie Co facing closure

Never struck me that Byron Bay Cookie Company was in deep trouble. Yes, those cookies were definitely not cheap, but damn they were tasty. Will be quite a shame if they're about to face the chopping block, but no excuse for tax evasion.

Another victim of the academic squeeze? :( Though may I say that there must be something wrong at the high level and / or budgeting if all of the sudden things went completely south by the loss of $2 million (either poor planning or contingency, and/or how the hell did $2 million just disappear - it was never assured nor contracted?)

Must say that sucks. Hope your new prospects translate to a new and exciting venture.

The more I see that academia is getting the blood drained from it in this country, the more I'm considering that my career will need to look abroad to have any chance.

Interesting... their shops at airports seem very quiet. I never saw how they could keep their business model up. I do see the cookies in the uk at times already so not sure how a franchise would be successful. And any person who invested in a franchise model where the manufacturer was in such (potential) trouble would be absolutely stupid. (Anyone remember quiznos?)

And who said I am not making the most of it?

Well flying back to Sydney every weekend means you aren't embracing the change. And while Brisbane is a hole, I have still managed to live there for over thirty years ...

Perhaps they need to spice up their cookies and merge with Byron Bay Chilli Company - Home

Interesting story about Byron Bay Cookies.

Let's hope we don't lose more jobs to overseas.

Westpac are capping their credit cards from June 17th on reward points so get ready with your scissors.
The only surviving card seems to be Westpac Platinum Krisflyer that remains uncapped.

I know dammit. Just when I was on a roll paying my taxes. :(

Out of 24 grant applications, we only got 3, and they all went to one lab (not mine). There's also a reduction in money for infrastructure etc. so they were 2 mil short of what they expected based on previous years. My boss is hoping to pay me from his grant for a few months so that I have more than a weeks notice. The job I'm interviewing for would be a big step up so I'm not sure of my chances but its a start.
