Re: Socceroos 2 nil at the ½

Delayed ½ hour due to a down pour; I've rarely seen that much black on the BOM rain radar!

You BNE'ites - did you get washed away? Much ? 13mm between 6:30pm and 7:30pm
When I walked outside work to get to the train station the lightning was everywhere and I got soaked walking up the stairs. I got on the 7:02pm train at Toowong station which was already a few minutes late and waited on a packed train at Auchenflower for ~15 minutes as the train could not proceed to Milton station where the platform and concourse was full of people trying to get shelter from the rain. Finally got to Central station close to ~7:25pm, had a quiet ale at the pub and got wet walking up Jacobs Ladder.

My rainwater tank filled (from less than 10% starting point) in about 15 mins. The swimming pool was in need of adding water before the downpour, but no longer :). Had to rescue the baby guinea pigs before they drowned in the back yard. 43mm in my rain gauge this morning.

Freddie Junior?

How many people do we need to attend to officially be classed as a FT DO?

Looks like I am bringing Freddie Junior, but Mr X is someone different.

From FT,

Maybe you don't have enough time to check communitybuzz! often enough to be informed about the lastest DOs in your hometown, or a place you'd like to visit.

THE CONSOLIDATED DO-LIST THREAD

After some time on the BA board, it grew up and is now old enough to make attending DOs easier for everybody.

this thread is brought to you by:
the CommunityBuzz! Moderators

If you think we have missed anything, then drop us a PM or post in the thread to let us know and one of us will add it in :)
We'll try and add in any DO/Meet which has more than five FT attendees (let us know if we have missed any
Please use the same format as on the list! when telling us and be patient if we don't.

Is Wallacej a FT member, but looks like it could be classed as a regular(semi) Brisbane get together.

Let's not let technicalities of a quorum from another BB cloud our own judgement as to what number of AFF members begets an AFF meet. I'd say 2 members could technically be classified as a meet (Do).

New thread activity: Murphy's Laws of Flying

Use Google/Wikipedia if you're unsure about what is meant by "Murphy's Law". Then post your own which is related to flying.

Note that rules can be related to anything about flying. It is not necessarily constrained to one airline/alliance/nation/airport/etc. etc.

Now to start things off...

1. Priority baggage - isn't.
2. When you change your flight to an earlier flight on the same sector, your original flight will leave first.
3. Inflight Y meals were prepared by the lowest bidder.

<puts on flame shield>

Serving coffee on aircraft causes turbulence.
If you arrive very early for a flight, it will be delayed
No flight ever leaves on time unless you are running late
If you are running late for a flight, it will depart from the farthest gate within the terminal
Flights never leave from Gate #1 at any terminal in the world
The crying baby on board your flight is always seated next to you.
The best-looking woman on your flight is never seated next to you.

Another of Murphy's laws...

*sigh*
Anyway, looks like this little time-waster has jumped the shark....

On another note, is there anyone who would like a Qantas Club pass for free (or know someone who would benefit from one)? (I don't need it given I just qualified SG). There are some catches though:

  • BNE people preferred (or those passing through BNE), since I can hand it to you in person. The only exception is on 31/10, when I will be in BNE, MEL, ADL and SYD (departing for flights at 0555, 1110, 1330 respectively and arriving in SYD at 1555).
  • The pass expires end of October 2008. In other words, in just about a week.
Interested? Please PM me ASAP. First-in-best-dressed, no skill required.

What has happened to the Triple Million mile challenge? As per the terms and conditions I cannot continue as I got the challenge to LAX but I am sure someone can think of way to get to Asia from LAX with Skyteam and earn huge bonuses....

JohnK, can you or somebody else advise the venue for the drinks tomorrow afternoon...seems I have a goodbyde drinks for a colleague at the Pig N Whistle at 4pm, so I'll be walking back up the Hill at 5pm to meet up with AFF'ers.

Drinks are on Wednesday 29 October at 6pm, not tomorrow afternoon.

The venue is The Mill Hotel Bar & Restaurant. It is located on Wickham Terrace, on the corner of Bartley St, next to Brisbane Private Hospital, opposite the old Tower Mill and ~100 metres from Jacobs Ladder.

And as mentioned earlier Amex is accepted....

As another sub-thread(s) to this thread...

I am travelling to Sydney for the weekend of Friday 31 October (next week) and returning Sunday 2 November. I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Darling Harbour and my flight out on the Sunday is the 1700h QF453 SYD-MEL flight (connecting to 2005h QF636 MEL-BNE flight).

I've checked 131500.info and from the hotel to SYD T3 in order to arrive by 1600h (allow time for check-in and some delay):

  • 1523h to catch the latest train that will get me there on time.
  • 1454h to catch the latest bus routing that will get me there on time.
Not sure about taxi timing, but can anyone relay some advice as to what the traffic is like on a Sunday afternoon in Sydney, particularly going to the airport? Anyone care to estimate the PERT time (optimistic, average, pessimistic)? (Guess the easiest way is to take the train - no traffic...)

Ideally  I'd like to leave as late as possible but still make the flight. Yes I expect too much don't I ? I guess I also have a "one flight contingency" up my sleeve (but the ground staff will probably give me a very awkward vibe if they even reallocate me on the next flight without charge if I miss QF453).

On top of that, we also know there are several ways to get upgrades:

  • Points upgrades (from anything except N, O, Q and X)
  • Operational upgrades
  • On Departure upgrades (again anything except N, O, Q and X)
  • Bumping / reallocation to different flight (and put in J for operational / capacity reasons)
As a new SG, I have access to the QC now, but.... has anyone scored an upgrade "against the rules" and/or by simply asking for it (at check-in, or at the QC/JL)? Would anyone like to relay their scores/successes/stories?

Someone remarked that even a QC agent has said, "If you don't ask, you'll never know." But it feels so presumptuous to ask for an upgrade, especially if it were me in my case:

  • Only an SG, not a WP.
  • Don't think I'd rank very highly on the overall QF loyalty scheme of things.
  • Often travel on Red e-Deals (especially lowest fare bucket), which we know are non-upgradable.
I guess the worst that can happen is you'll get a "no", but it still feels slightly embarrassing and presumptuous.

I was thinking about my couple of BNE/MEL flights and one ADL/SYD flight that I have on that weekend, but again all in lowest bucket Red e-Deal........ (I'm the SLC everyone loves to hate, aren't I?)

Having stayed at the HI Darling Harbour a couple of times and caught the train, the best station is to walk to Central (perhaps 10-12 minutes, about 4 blocks IIRC). I'm with serfty, unless your planned itinerary of things to do means that you have fixed times, then I'd seriously consider ditching or paring down something to make sure I'd get there in time and aren't rushing...as you'll have luggage.

Taxi - I think (IIRC) Dave Noble used to tell me about 25 mins and $17 via the Eastern Distributor.

Hahahaha..you are kidding aren't you :o. A late Sunday afternoon and you think you're going to get a "op up". Nope, be prepared to pony up points would be my only suggestion.
