The totally off-topic thread

Amex may regard that as abusing the terms and conditions of the promotion. What terms and conditions you ask? Amex will be mailing out the revised terms and conditions at the end of the promotion. ;)
How could that be abuse? You ordered a drink and paid for it. Then a while later ordered another and paid for it. Nothing wrong with that. And as that is the way you would pay if using cash, then it is precisely what Amex has asked you to do - to change your payment habits from using cash to using the card.

I did say Amex may regard that as abuse. I see nothing wrong with buying a number of drinks and counting them as separate transactions but I would not be surprised if Amex thought differently if only to try and dig themselves out of the big hole they are in right now....

in the spirit of thread competition, lets make sure the Amex thread discussion doesn't spill into this one..

The way the Amex thread is progressing it will be hard for this thread to catch up or even stay close. I can almost see the Amex thread continuing until at least March, 8-10 weeks after the end of the promotion, possibly further. The Amex thread could potentially have 5,000 posts by the end of this year. :-|

Not if people kept all off-topic discussion in this thread instead of creating new threads in the Playground. ;)

Wouldn't they all be paying for their own drinks, one at a time, on their Amex cards? That way each person gets n transactions where n=number of round :p

Some of us don't have Amex; like me, yes I have cash you know folding stuff, so if someone wants the extra points.

Not sure that the bar staff would be happy to process all those transactions, plus that would eat into our time to converse with each other. But, I'll give it a go :D

One evening last month I bought 4 or 5 drinks and paid for them one at a time. The next night they offered to run a tab and for me to pay when I left. I think it is time consuming for them to process credit card transactions every time you buy a drink but as the pub is not super busy most nights they accept it. These days I don't visit the pub every night and when I do I don't stay for long periods so I am only buying 2-3 drinks a night which I pay up front and just go back to the bar to collect the next drink when I am ready.

Drinks are on Wednesday 29 October at 6pm. The venue is The Mill Hotel Bar & Restaurant. It is located on Wickham Terrace, on the corner of Bartley St, next to Brisbane Private Hospital, opposite the old Tower Mill and ~100 metres from Jacobs Ladder.

And as mentioned earlier Amex is accepted....
Just to make sure everybody remembers/knows where to go soon.

I may drive there and park opposite the Hospital. Just too long to walk back to St Pauls Terrace (could always hop a cab instead and get another Amex transaction fro the month:shock:)

Cash is always welcome in my wallet - I never seem to have any.

Be even easier if AMex introduced PIN security.

Just back from UK and France where all the rest's and bars now used wireless terminals. Swipe card, enter PIN, receipt printed, all done....

Well, a good group met tonight in BNE...welcome to wallacej and then the usual suspects (JohnK, Aus_Mal, anatOl, Bundy Bear and special guest Freddie Jnr). Was great to meet old and new AFF'ers and get another 3 Amex transactions.

I think there will definitely need to be a return event in about a months' time...just so we can use our Amex's again ;).

I feel v left out of that v happening AMEX thread. I feel like applying for an AMEX now just to join in on the fun. :D

It was good to meet up with everyone again last night and also meet wallacej. The Amex connection had a good workout throughout the night.

Looking to have the next gathering for the last Wednesday in November....

Well that sure was an interesting evening... it was great to put some faces to the name - and even though I had not read the Amex thread before, I certainly have been updated :)

It was a good evening, and certainly on those nights where you think you are alone, it is reassuring that there are others in a similar situation.

Looking forward to the next catch up - and I encourage anyone that has not caught up for a drink to do so at the next opportunity.

What has happened to the Triple Million mile challenge? As per the terms and conditions I cannot continue as I got the challenge to LAX but I am sure someone can think of way to get to Asia from LAX with Skyteam and earn huge bonuses....

Hmmm...I feel odd beating an unconscious horse, but I was bored so I logged onto Flight Stats....and here we go:

How about LAX-LHR on AF61?

GCM gives 5456 miles.

Then bonuses IDA (LAX-LHR) and INT (international) apply, so that is 20% + 10% = 30% bonus mileage.

So total creditable to the SkyTeam alliance would be 5456 * 1.3 = 7092 miles (round down any decimals). The balances of the Oneworld Alliance and Star Alliance decreases by the current rate of attrition.

Attrition Rate: -1000 points/post
Bonus Rates (IDA/IDC/JDA/JDC/INT) %: 20/60/40/100/10
Location: LAX
Destination: LHR via AF61
Base Mileage: 5456
Bonuses: 1636
Credited Mileage: 7092
Alliance: SkyTeam
New Balances:
oneworld: 23,754
Star Alliance: 21,465
SkyTeam: 15,092

Aside: This one was tough for the SkyTeam to get out of LAX, because the best mileage on a SkyTeam flight I could find was LAX-SVO, except you only get +10% on that (no tricks with the IATA codes). Nothing good to Asia on SkyTeam to be found ex-LAX (LAX-ICN is good on mileage, but no good on bonuses). Looks like I'm not very creative either, since we're back to the start point LHR....
