The totally off-topic thread

Hmmm...I feel odd beating an unconscious horse, but I was bored so I logged onto Flight Stats....and here we go:

How about LAX-LHR on AF61?

GCM gives 5456 miles.

Then bonuses IDA (LAX-LHR) and INT (international) apply, so that is 20% + 10% = 30% bonus mileage.

So total creditable to the SkyTeam alliance would be 5456 * 1.3 = 7092 miles (round down any decimals). The balances of the Oneworld Alliance and Star Alliance decreases by the current rate of attrition.

OK, let me be lazy again. Lets fly LHR-MEL on QF10

GCM gives 10503 miles.

Then bonuses JDA (LHR-MEL) and INT (international) apply, so that is 40% + 10% = 50% bonus mileage.

So total creditable to the oneworld alliance would be 10503 * 1.5 = 15754 miles (round down any decimals). The balances of the Star Alliance and SkyTeam alliances decreases by the current rate of attrition.

The way the Amex thread is progressing it will be hard for this thread to catch up or even stay close. I can almost see the Amex thread continuing until at least March, 8-10 weeks after the end of the promotion, possibly further. The Amex thread could potentially have 5,000 posts by the end of this year. :-|

If there are a bunch of people getting letters about having their participation in the promotion pulled, then it might get to 5,000 even faster!

Possibly. For all I know I may be one of those people. Don't get back home until tonight. I just love surprises....

I may be as well, but
a) I don't get home till tonight
b) Mail deliveries, at least to my part of Melbourne, seem remarkably slow compared to what I have been used to, so even if I do have a letter, I may not get it till next week

At risk of making this sound like another AMEX thread I've seen or heard nothing since I first registered for the promotion.

No POC's, no letters no notification of any kind. I do have two witnesses to my original registration which was done in the QP AKL (one posts here) though so I think I'll just sit back and see what happens.

The you've heard as much as me!

I have three MR account which I registered for all three promotions on/before 18th September.

What have I had in relation since?

I've had 2 x 5K bonus points on the one account and two 10trx=10K letters, neither identifying the account they related to.

But that's it.

Anyone using Vista Business? Have you had to make many changes to improve performance? I have been advised to search the internet and disable many features of Vista Business. Some simple things like running programs, copying files are not that simple when Vista Business continues to ask for administrator permission. It is not a network it is a single user machine. Who thinks up this garbage?

I have to ask, but "Are you sure you want to disable those features?"

:p

Maybe a computer programmer; do you know any of them. ;)

I am still with Windows XP waiting for Microsoft to fix up all the bugs with Vista before I buy a new machine.

Well i have been with vista for 18 months now-home premium.touch wood no major problems. Then again I have always found computers just do what they want to anyway.

JohnK,

I use XP on my PC and Vista Business on the lap top. I have to agree that some of the garbage they come up with on Vista makes life a real pain whenever you want to do something.

The other problem I see though, (conspiracy theory) is that as the updates are added to XP it just gets slower and slower as if on purpose. Windows 98 suffered the same way. It almost seems that the slow down is intentional from MS to make things so bad that people then want, or need to update to the newer product :!:

I don't use Business; I've got Home Premium. Not much major functional difference between the lot, however, except for perhaps Basic. (Mostly specific functionality is what divides each version).

There's quite a few things you can tweak to run Vista a little better, especially if you are using it for something more than your run-of-the-mill lay person's computer, e.g. software development. Apart from the usual show all hidden files and file extensions, turning off that administrator thing is not a bad idea (it's called User Access Control. It's supposed to mimic the security like system on Unix - i.e. on Unix normally you can't do things that a root can do unless you log on as root or you use the sudo command. Vista: good idea, horrid implementation.) Just make sure that you, of course, are a full administrator rights user.

Also, if you're not a fashion freak as such, you could turn off all the glassy effects etc. and possibly regain a bit of memory.

Apart from that, Vista seems to work for me just fine. XP never gave me many gripes either, mind you. 98 was good at the time but in retrospect now it was crash palace and I'm glad to be rid of it. (Let's not start with ME...*shudder* I never had to go through that personally...) The problems with Vista start rearing with legacy hardware and some old software (which may not be so "old", but certainly DOS based programs may start to bring on a hullaballoo).

I don't know. I have been advised it would be a good idea by a PC support specialist at work who also worked at Lenovo.

My biggest issue right now is AFF does not function with shrink wrapped Vista Business. Why?

Maybe a computer programmer; do you know any of them. ;)
Any half decent computer programmer in their right mind would not have anything to do with PC operating systems. ;)

From what I heard Vista is dead. The new product is apparently called Windows 7 which is based on Vista but worse.

Can you describe the ill-experience? Are you using Firefox? I'm using FF3 with Vista Home Premium right now, with no ill side effects. AFF doesn't use Java - thank goodness! (= less overheads)

Tell that to the many students who study third level Operating Systems at my university. They almost crack their heads open from banging their head against the wall trying to grapple with Minix and recompiling the kernel again and again and again and.................

That's comforting to know. :( Especially with some of the pundits out there calling Vista the new ME.

Not a fan of Firefox. I have a brand new but superceded Lenovo R61e with 2ghZ Intel Celeron 550 processor, 3GB ram, 120GB hard drive, IE7 and Windows Vista Business installed. I downloaded and installed a free 3 month trial of Norton.

I can view posts on AFF but I cannot reply to a post or add new posts. The tab just remains blank waiting for something or other. I have no isses with Flyertalk or other forums. I thought it may have been Norton phishing fliter so I turned this off but still does not work.

Well, like the tree said to the woodsman, I'm stumped.

On another note - new subthread - does anyone want to hazard a guess as to how systematic (or not systematic) is QF's flight numbering system?

I mean, most (all?) of the BNE/SYD flights are QF5xx, SYD/MEL are QF4xx and BNE/MEL flights are QF6xx - that completes the vital East coast triangle. But the rest seem rather random. I thought that ADL/??? flights were QF7xx, but I'm not too confident on that on. I'm not going to start with international flights.

I wonder what flight numbers were chosen for QF's new routes; I guess one that comes to mind is SYD/EZE.

Anyone want to weigh in?
