The totally off-topic thread

Hahahaha..you are kidding aren't you :o. A late Sunday afternoon and you think you're going to get a "op up". Nope, be prepared to pony up points would be my only suggestion.

Well, I can spare the points required, but considering I'm still in O fare I thought your reaction would be much the same.

Still, wondering if people have any stories to share....

I've been able to snag an ODU twice, on an O and N class fare in the QP.

Oh, and best course of action is "just hoping I could ODU on this flight" NOT "I know I'm on a Red eDeal but......"; that always fails!

That was as a QP PS.

...
Taxi - I think (IIRC) Dave Noble used to tell me about 25 mins and $17 via the Eastern Distributor.
... try $30 on a good day! Tell to driver to take O'Riordan St through Zetland, save $5-$10 and take about the same time (being Sunday afternoon) .

I agree with Lindsay ...

Not sure about taxi timing, but can anyone relay some advice as to what the traffic is like on a Sunday afternoon in Sydney, particularly going to the airport?
Very light unless there are major sporting events.

Thanks for all your feedback.

  • Light traffic would be nice, although I have driven  in Sydney before on a Sunday. Not heavy traffic, but certain hurt mentally trying to get into the correct lane on the way to the airport. And certainly not a leisurely drive either...
  • Chances of op-up = negative one. ... nah seriously, much expected.
I was probably more chancing the probability of an ODU but from on O fare. I assume, too that would also be small (for the mathematically literate, probability = 1 x 10^(-infinity) ?)
On a more tangential note, I noticed that this great thread is only rated at 4 out of 5 stars.:-|

And at this posting rate, how are we ever going to surpass the Amex thread?

For the story you wanted, I just looked back on my flights log.

In 2008, I have been able to get 8 ODU's, no op ups (first ODU was as WP, rest as SG) from 22 eligible (domestic) flights. Note that I usually only try for ODU's on sectors longer than 2 hours, given better value for my points.

In 2007, I was able to get 8 ODU's from 18 flights, however 1 was an op up (so when I was a WP)

In 2006, I got my best results - 8 ODU's from 11 flights, no op ups...

What is it with 8's...lucky, I suppose

(Caveat....upgrades include both those opted for at/after ticketing but before 24 hour lock-out as well as ODU's at the QP - the majority received being from the latter).

Drinks are on Wednesday 29 October at 6pm, not tomorrow afternoon.

The venue is The Mill Hotel Bar & Restaurant. It is located on Wickham Terrace, on the corner of Bartley St, next to Brisbane Private Hospital, opposite the old Tower Mill and ~100 metres from Jacobs Ladder.

And as mentioned earlier Amex is accepted....

Is this still on?? I will be there.

Indeed I still intend to be there. I am meeting a client for lunch (12.30pm) at the Holiday Inn, so may make it a long, slow, late lunch...then a walk back up Jacobs Ladder for drinks later on. Should be a good day

Yes drinks are still on. I will try to get there before 6:00pm. More than likely we will be sitting outside as long as it is not too cool.

I should be there close to 6... also note that it is triple diners points on a Wednesday!! lol

How will I know who you are - or will it be THAT obvious :p

Just ask at the bar for John. I will let them know there will be a few people coming along. I will be sitting outside. I recognise everyone else that is coming along.

  • Listen to the general conversations and move towards the mob that keeps talking in AFF / FT speak.
  • Try and locate the individuals who are paying for rounds using Amex...perhaps also the group of individuals who are trying to work out who will pay the next round using whose Amex.....

See you there!

My goodness, imagine the SC/Point net worth in that photo alone. you know if all you guys got together you would have some real pull with QF..:p

Not sure about that.

I was on a full 737 flight from Perth to Kalgoorlie in mid-August. Pretty much every single passenger was off to work on the mine sites - hi-vis jacket wearers, white collars, you name it.

I wouldn't be suprised if every single one of those people was either a high QF SG or WP.

Oh good, my photo is there so you should be able to see me. I'll be arriving there between 5.15 and 5.30pm, as I need to leave by 6.30pm (my wife has a 7pm get together with our street's mothers group and I have to look after my daughter - not hard when she's alseep).

Look for me in a white shirt with very small blue checks and blue tie with box designs. I'll be leaning on the bar waiting....

Wouldn't they all be paying for their own drinks, one at a time, on their Amex cards? That way each person gets n transactions where n=number of round :p

Amex may regard that as abusing the terms and conditions of the promotion. What terms and conditions you ask? Amex will be mailing out the revised terms and conditions at the end of the promotion. ;)
