The totally off-topic thread

One of life's little pleasures is sitting on our deck with a freshly brewed coffee and reading the paper on Sunday morning. The paper is not about news, but entertainment :)

Very relaxing

I definitely understand the relaxing bit. Just questioning the Sunday mail bit. Perhaps the Queensland version is better than the Advertisers version.

My dad switches ISPs almost every 2-3 years. After a while, unless you're using the line seriously for business, they're all a much of muchness, and not a good one at that.

TPG's customer service has always been pathetic, thankfully I'm not the type that needs to use it too often, usualll only when setting up an account etc. But the camel that broke the straws back, was when they advertised a better deal than what I was on, but refused to move me onto it as I was an existing customer. They wanted me to cancel my current contract, pay the break out fee, and then setup as a totally new customer including the establishment fee - and this is at the same address too.

I was irate with the "manager" that I was transferred onto who asked me, what they could do to keep my custom.

I still pay $7 a week to have the thing delivered, along with that I get through the paywall.

That price has not changed.

I say this making an assumption - Good to see somebody supporting a small business, the local newsagent.

Not sure the local newsagent actually gets anything out of delivery anymore. I have The Age delivered everyday and it is organised through Fairfax. Don't have any contact with anybody local.

I'm sure fairfax will be paying the newsagent.

Yep, the local Newsagent/(Licenced) Post/Office/Stationers etc.

Times are tough for them though - they can't afford to pay anyone to deliver these days - bought in about 6 years ago and are basically stuck with it.

Has anybody else seen this: Asiana Pilot Names Hoax...... how embarrasing

From my dealings with Fairfax and initial delivery issues I believe it is done by a separate company that only does deliveries, not involved with the newsagents.

Mine used to be delivered by one of the local newsagents. While the same people are delivering it, they no longer have a shopfront due to some dispute with the shopping centre (I'm guessing lease renewal/rental related)

TV Station Makes Excruciating Error, Reads 4 Wrong Names Of Asiana Crash Pilots, 'Sum Ting Wong' And 'Ho Lee cough' | Business Insider Australia

It was briefly mentioned on the Asiana 777 crash thread. Whether it's unfortunate, offensive or utterly hilarious is undecided... of course, it has also been deemed all three at the same time.

It's both racist and offensive. It is fairly poor if the source was the NTSB

Do you really think the NTSB would have given that information? I doubt it.
Some lacky in the newsroom was probably building the slides and didn't have access to the names so substituted something into the space and forgot to remove. Very poor.

The NTSB has apologized regarding the information so with that in mind, yes they were involved in this.

The NTSB had in fact verified those names.

The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.
Press Release July 12, 2013

It says something about the publics perception of the media, that just about everywhere I have seen where the broadcast was discussed, someone had decided that the broadcaster was not truthful in it's statement that they had verified the names.

Hellos are easy....
Gotta look on the bright side, JohnK - the hello is the good bit - there wouldn't be a goodbye if there'd been no hello…
And then there's the anticipation for the next time you can say hello. :)

Travelling a lot means one is always saying goodbyes. :(

The mode of travel, and destination, will of course temper this effect, JohnK - but not always for the better :(.

I remember telling Mrs Jukebox that Port Hedland* airport was unique, as it was the first place I'd been where people who were arriving (de-planing?... oh, please!) were the ones with tears in their eyes, and the people waiting for the departing aircraft were the ones with beaming smiles...

As a certain ivory tinkling pop star once mused, "Life is a series of Hello's and Goodbye's..."

*Of course there are many, many places just like this. Hedland was just my first exposure to this particular form of misery...
