The totally off-topic thread

... After I posted on this thread I left work earlier as I was not feeling well. The 3:09pm train left on time. I got to the train station at 3:18pm and the 3:24pm did not arrive until 3:40pm and that is 2 days in a row my train has been over 15 minutes late ...
This morning I was up and about and ready to go a few minutes earlier than normal to catch my Bus. I normally hang around a bit in these cases; but as it was only a couple of minutes I decided to depart.

Good thing I did, as:
  • The Bus was about 3 minutes early; leaving at the normal time I would probably have missed it.
  • Being early, the bus arrived at the station in time to catch a 'stopping all stations' train scheduled five minutes earlier than my normal express .
  • As the express train normally overtakes the stopper, I was going to let it go.
  • As the stopper was pulling in I received an SMS - looking at it I saw it was from Connex; the express train had been cancelled. Ooops - I jumped on the stopper.

Lucky I left home two minutes early eh?

(Of course, I have other days where all the holes line up in the other direction ...):-|

With almost all the kids on holidays now (and the uni undergrads finished for the year), bus transport has become relatively prompt - perhaps a bit too much...

Where I get the bus, normally the buses would arrive about 3-10 minutes late. Now they are about +/- 4 minutes from scheduled departure, with the mean probably being on time.

Moreover to that, since there are no kids on the bus, that means almost all the seats are free. When the kids are on, not only do I never get a seat, but often someone (me, another pax, driver) has to harass them to stop crowding at the front and move towards the back so that more pax can get on.

As for the Airtrain, I've only caught it twice. Once was in the morning (first service), so save me God if it was late, and it wasn't. However, I did almost miss it because the stupid station staff at Roma Street decided not to open up the train station until about 3 minutes before that train arrived (leaving a very frantic window to grab a ticket then run up to the platform).

Another time was in the Friday rush hour of around 5pm, similar to JohnK's predicament. Funnily enough, mirroring JohnK, the train arrived late by about 30 minutes. In retrospect, it was a bit hard to tell if it was late, or simply did a no-show and we ended up catching the next Airtrain. Since I don't catch the Airtrain often enough, I didn't know this lateness affair was chronic.

Airtrain services (AFAIK usually) run from Airport-Gold Coast, so they should be one of the few trains that ever run late, let alone do no-shows. Most embarrassing for Airtrain (hence the laughable patronage) and even more embarrassing for Brisbane. Coachtrans shuttles probably do a better job.

The train to the Gold Coast runs every hour while the train to the airport runs every 20 minutes so it is possible they just didn't run the train that would only stop/start from South Bank.

I have only ever caught the airtrain 4 times, and only once was I actually flying. From where I live on the Cleveland line it doesn't connect properly to the air train line so a 20 minute taxi trip would take 1 hr 30 via train.

I don't know much about buses but I definitely know there is a sign on trains stating that any school kid travelling on a free pass should vacate a seat if there is a paying adult standing. Hardly ever see this gesture extended to anyone. And many times school kids have their legs stretched and rested on the seat in front.

This I find quite common.

Sometimes it cannot be helped; on a crowded train sometimes the kids are encroached into their seats. Making them get up and having an adult try to take their seat is genuinely awkward. Moreover is when an adult refuses to take the seat vacated by the student, again very awkward.

Adults also feel relatively apathetic and/or embarrassed to tell students to give up their seats. And if it hasn't quite ticked on anyone here, kids actually find it somewhat amusing and "satisfying" (can't find a good word here) when they attract the attention of a berating adult. They just laugh, quietly remark "what's his/her problem" (in their minds: referring to that old hag/d***head) and may or may not comply. In short, you haven't achieved anything except lose some face.

Misbehaviour is typically reported to schools, but most schools try and wash their hands of responsibility (it can't be our student, how can we possibly make students follow the rules, etc.). I've reported ill-behaviour to a couple of schools and have got the latter response, i.e. completely washing their hands of responsibility with little regard that the students are tarnishing the good name of the school.

There are rarely any guards/ticket inspectors on trains (almost impractical in the peak hour) to monitor and check on this kind of behaviour.

Moreover, I've gotten quite used to never having a seat (notwithstanding having a job which is in front of a computer for hours upon hours in a day), so most of the time I do not bother unless I am really tired. I do get highly annoyed by students who insist on standing where they are just to have a chinwag with their friends, not realising that there is space in the bus/train carriage that could otherwise be occupied by ever boarding patrons that is rendered relatively inaccessible due to their not moving. This gets particularly annoying when a bus driver is apethetic about this and declares a bus full, thus missing passengers along the way, although there is space for at least 6 passengers (but the space is at the back of the bus).

There is absolutely no excuse for kids - or anyone for that matter - to have their feet on seats. Again, however, enforcement is lax and apathy on part of the fellow pax to tell the offender to stop infringing is ever present (with the exception of a crowded train).

My experience also. *waves his cane* "Get them darn kids off my lawn!!"

My high school must be the exception to the rule then, they took things like that very seriously even to the extent of if you're seen off campus, in uniform on the way home looking scruffy you could still get in trouble..

Nice to see we've taken a different track. We were getting too close to turning this into a public transport thread.

/train on/ I've caught the airtrain only once. Ran on time. Problem was they were renovating the valley station, so i had to change at bowen Hills. Glad it wasnt pouring.

The reason patronage is so low on airtrain is mostly that (especially from where i live) it's <$30 in a taxi, but it's $13 each person, and takes twice as long, plus the walk to the station, plus the having to change trains was a pain. So the train is only good for single travellers. The second there's 2 or more of you, taxi is by far the better option.

Make sure there's no red ink of course.......

(Ugh, they're getting worse)

I used the Air train frequently 04-07 when I used to stay at my B-I-L's place two to three times per month.

Firstly Auchenflower, then Southbank.

I used the pre-paid voucher that you can get at a good discount in books of 10. $120 now - they used to be $80!

Note these tickets are not good for Auchenflower, nor Southbank but I was never pulled up.

In any case, I always had my 'hick' Mexican spiel pre-rehearsed "What, South bank? I thought this was South Brisbane?" (the tickets were good for South Brisbane, but not South Bank - ~300 hundred metres along the line).

A different track... oh... I see what you did there

A ripper of a storm passed through the northside of Brisbane about an hour ago...but understandable as by 7am it was oppresively hot.

The storms have been getting earlier & earlier.
