Actually at one time Japan was absolutely peppered with golf courses. Due to the economic downturn, many Japanese couldn't afford their golf memberships and some courses have had to close.

Sounds like the Gold Coast post Japan GFC.. Easier solution was to evidently sell off the course & or void land at a huge loss.

Our newest driver is about to have her wings clipped with a 3 month suspension
Got back from PER today to find a fixed penalty notice from a speed camera in Pacific Highway Sydney North Shore. Luckily for me I was at work over a hundred ks away ;)
Luckily for her we'll be in the LOTFAP for most of the suspension period, I can only hope it's taught her a lesson :!:

Geez... must've been pretty fast to have all the demerits from a P wiped out at once.

Unfortunately, I think a tough but good lesson to be learnt early on in one's driving career.

Sounds like it's time for her to visit the local emergency rooms to see what happens when speeding cars collide.

2 points for the offence but in NSW any speeding offence on P1 plates is an automatic 3 month suspension.
Tough love I think ;)

Tough love or whatever - it's the consequences.

I got my P licence in the days when the P1 and P2 system didn't exist (at least in QLD), plus there was no need to log 1000 hours of experience.

I got a speeding ticket whilst on my P licence, driving 64 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Paid the fine but didn't lose my licence / have it suspended.

Have never sped since, but I seem to find that if you're not speeding, you're not driving fast enough according to everyone else on the road. The only time everyone drives to the limit is when you know there's a speed camera approaching. Apart from that, driving 5 - 10 km/h above the limit seems compulsory. That said, I always stick to the limit.

Ouch! That is one way to learn a lesson about speeding.

Yep - lost mine for 3 months for speeding within my first year of driving. Never lost it since (and you now know how long that is, cove ;)).

My nice new white secondhand car in Perth has front and rear radar/laser detection seeing we live in Western Australia where it is legal. The system reports red light and speed cameras as well.
Naturally I have tried hard to keep my 12 points intact and so far so good.
It was really funny that we were at the same primary school only 55 years ago JohnM. Now that is a coincidence to meet up thru AFF.

It's Loy Krathong in Thailand, with a touch of Guy Fawkes night.
Full moon, BBQ, a monster bonfire in the back yard, industrial strength karaoke and a truck-load of of illegal fireworks.

Better start watching that Chevy Chase movie where the family drive to Wally World which of course is Magic Mountain in Valencia (about 75minutes/ miles north of LAX) in California.

Yes JohnM 55 years later we can still drive past that school year 3 class in Wembley but we both left the suburb. Of course we haven't changed a bit.

So where would be a good place to "get out of Tokyo", preferably a place accessible via a direct Shinkansen?

Sorry, don't quite fit the bill with number one choice. Takayama is in the hills about 5 hours West of Tokyo, reachable by direct bus, or via Shinkansen to Nagoya, then a 'local' train to Takayama (nice trip through the hills). Lot of history, and a welcome change to the hustle and bustle of somewhere like Shinjuku.
Of course, Osaka/Kyoto/Hiroshima are all among a number of cities directly accessible by Shinkansen, and the latter two (have not been to Osaka) are eminently visitable cities, but of course are also large cities, though not as large as Tokyo of course.
