The totally off-topic thread

I watched one of those discovery channel shows a few years ago that was about container ships, or something. They made the point that it was cheaper to move a container from Shanghai to Hamburg than it was to then put that container on a truck and send it 100km down the road. Economies of scale.

In terms of fruit and vege, I recall seeing farms out near Fairbarn Dam near emerald that were supposedly producing fruit 365 days a year due to climate and water availability and sending out 5-10 semi loads a week or a day (iirc). That was in the mid90s.

Global economy and expanding populations mean that local seasonal fruit and vege is a thing of the past. The downside of the financial worlds constant growth model. More people requires scale and efficiency in feeding them.

The one I saw recently was talking about UK ports and how cheap it was to ship the container compared to trucking it 20km down the road. It is amazing.

I've shipped stuff back from Cambodia & Chiang Mai. It was many times more expensive to move the goods from the dock/home than from the jungle to Oz port.

For my own amusement, I did some screen caps of Breakfast on ABC News 24 as I was having breakfast this morning.

The PM is in Melbourne, live from Melbourne.

Client of mine used to be a monopoly in remote mining towns however now no longer exists as people can source things in other cheaper ways...

I still have contacts in parts of the so-called "ancillary mining services industry". It's basically a licence to print cash.

Sounds like they are in the adult industry. They are raking the money in AFAIK!
Miners need love and affection too ;)

They damn well rake in the money! Especially in WA compared to QLD where the latter's regulation and general view to the industry is more stringent.

It gets hilarious to read in the headlines that the adult industry is struggling when the resources industry experiences a shock / downturn.

I did seriously consider buying the Karratha brothel a couple of years ago. Think I mentioned it here as the workers were all subcontracted fifos.

Re: The totally off-topic threadt

Unless it is shaped into a patty at burger king. From memory it used to amaze me how much cheaper they were compared to Australia (and still advertising that they were using Australian meat).

Been a while since I've been to Thailand though.

Just as well. I find Burger King and McDonalds relatively expensive in Thailand. Cost of a burger or a burger meal close to cost in Australia.

One thing I try to avoid in Thailand is paying the same price for food as I sould pay in Australia. I am not going to pay 90 baht for a pie or 120 baht for a burger.

but but but... Maccas in Thailand has cheesy fries!!!! (for those who don't know... a large cardboard box filled with fries and salt and topped with lashings of melted kraft cheese :))

It is quite funny that over the years I have come across a number of Eastern European ladies travelling to/from Queensland mining towns and usually in business class.

They are definitely no miners. I used to think mail order brides but then things became clearer.

Good luck to them but I do hope they are doing their BAS regularly and pay the right amount of tax.

Wonder what they do for stocktake

On a more serious note, I suspect they are probably more accurate on their GST returns than the plethora of Sushi stores and the like that have sprung up in Brisbane, all insisting in cash only.

Not only sushi; almost any Asian food establishment that insists on cash only.
