So I take that to mean as long as the F check-in is open, I can check in how ever early I like for QF133; e.g. if it's open 8am in the morning, I can check-in for QF133 at 8am, clear passport control and have almost a full day at the FL. Sounds nice to me :) So looks like the plan might be a day in MEL before heading across the Tasman...

Just called QF then and I was advised that the earliest I could check-in for any flight was 3 hrs before hand - no earlier. :(

So I might consider flying on 28/05 (then overnight in AKL) rather than overnight in MEL then go 29/05 (followed by a slumming in AKL until my flight AKL-SYD in the morning). It might be a good idea to leave some time anyway, just in case QF133 freakishly gets cancelled, which would seriously put me into the drink.

Just trying to mobilise now that there is a trans-Tasman sale right now. I do regret not buying the Business Saver fare AKL-BNE last week - $500 for 80 SC - but I couldn't afford to plonk another expense on the cards until my next billing cycle. :( I wonder if they'll have another one.

On the other hand, red e-deals from NZ to AU seem to have dropped......

Re: Another installment of random questions for the IPOT* initiative

51. A list of the ten most visited cities in the US (in alphabetical order):
Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando, San Francisco, Washington DC

Rank them in order of priority of visiting, starting with the city you want to visit first.
San Francisco, New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Las Vegas.

52. If you had to live somewhere else in Australia apart from your current city/town of residence, where would that be?
Melbourne, without a doubt. I love the city.

53. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Malay/Singaporean
Rank these cuisines in order from your most favoured to least favoured.
Malay/Singaporean (I've had a resurgence of this recently!), Japanese, Korean, Chinese (if we're talking Sezchuan, not Cantonese-style), Vietnamese, Thai.
54. In your opinion, what is the most useful benefit from having status with an airline FFP?
I'll tell you by the end of the year - I'm on a plan to reach Platinum after my fellowship exams are over.

55. Describe the longest transit journey you have ever undertaken which was not a flight (e.g. train trip, bus ride, cruise, etc.)
Canberra to Gladstone QLD by bus. It was something like 38 hours. I'll never ever do it again. Ah, the joys of being a student!

56. By what means do you normally travel to get to work/uni? And normally, how long would it take (from out of the door to in your office/campus)?
I tried public transport (and really wanted to, but the rapidly moving shifts and start/finish times meant that I was spending around 15 hours a week commuting). I had to give it up. It can take as little as 22 minutes outside of peak hour but up to 65 minutes in peak hour (the joys of the M4/Parramatta Road/City West Link!).

57. Name up to three full cost (not low cost), non-defunct carriers which you will never consider flying either in the near future or ever. (For a bonus point, give reasons.)
Garuda, Aeroflot or Korean (or the African airlines!) - safety is the main reason.

58. Where in the world have never been to before that you would like to go to next?
Spain. Finally!

59. Money and necessary health reasons aside, would you ever consider going into outer space? Why/Why not?
Absolutely - I'd love every minute of it. I've been fascinated by outer space ever since I read and re-read the "Space" article in World Book Encyclopaedia when I was 5.

60. What is your favourite oneworld, QP or QP-associated Lounge outside Australia?
Sadly, no experience with these yet - no overseas travel since I bought QP Life!

Just called QF then and I was advised that the earliest I could check-in for any flight was 3 hrs before hand - no earlier. :( ...
OK, so the QF telephone agent read from the manual.

Trust me - they don't necessarily read that part of the manual at the MEL F check-in (nor SYD). Never any guarantees of course, but with no checked luggage you would be almost certain of being able to do same day check-in.

Tip, don't even acknowledge any such 3 hour limit when entering to check in, just enter and politely present your WP card, PP and e-ticket print out and tell them where you a going with a happy smile.

There are rules, and there are rules that are often flexible.

As an example - back in Dec, I left Brisbane domestic pretty early in the morning, flying Business to Melbourne, and then had about 7 hours or so (can't remember the exact details) in the F lounge. I basically spent the entire day there. This was with checked luggage.

Boarding passes were both issued in Brisbane, and as Immigration hadn't opened the flight in MEL, they needed to call a supervisor to open up the flight for passengers.

I've also checked into International flights early, but there are certain limitations that apply - eg with no checked luggage, then they are more likely to open up a flight etc.

Ahhhhh no wonder why you guys are WP's ;)

*A smiling & polite DYKWIA ... WP! So check me in*

*A smiling & polite DYKWIA ... WP! So check me in*

There is a marked difference between a WP and a DYKWIA person. The WP who isn't a DYKWIA person is checked in, whereas the DYKWIA Wayne Kerr is told to take a wander elsewhere.

I've noticed this behaviour many times. Being a level headed WP helps immensely in these types of situations!

Yes I understand Mal - was merely joking at the thought and the words just didn't convey the tone the way it was meant (but that is how words are sometimes). And yes simple courtesy and politeness will go a long way regardless of being a WP or not.

Thanks serfty and Mal.

I will be travelling with checked luggage (can't see myself going a whole week and a bit with only carry-on luggage), so that's one trump card out of the hand.

The plan was to fly from ADL early-ish and then stay quite a few hours (more than 3) at the MEL T2 FL. Like Mal mentioned, if I can check-through from ADL and collect both BPs there, then there is no problem. Not sure if that method could backfire (either by ADL saying we don't do international check-throughs, which would be a load of b***s***, or saying that the timing isn't correct so you'll need to claim and re-check at MEL T2).

As I said earlier, I stuffed up the timing of the ADL-MEL flight, so my choices are overnight in MEL and fly MEL-AKL next day, or fly MEL-AKL on same day as ADL-MEL then overnight in AKL. Inherently the latter option is "safer", but what are the chances of QF133 being delayed or - gulp - cancelled?

Personally I'd balk if I tried to front up at MEL T2 F check-in and then was forced to wait 2-3 hours so QF133 was ready for check-in. So looks like the "safe" option it is....! Guess I better start investigating a decent hotel near AKL I to stay the night (don't really feel like going all the way into the city just for an overnight stay).

anat0l,

This place is not bad. Fairly new, clean and with free shuttle and free breakfast. There is a good pub (The Toby Inn) just a couple of hundred metres away.

Auckland Airport - Ventura Inn & Suites Hotel

Happy Birthday serfty,
Thanks for putting up with our rants and ravings !:)

Happy birthday serfty (he's 6 days after Charlotte).

I'm not on Jury Service today (my number wasn't called), but almost certain to be on again tomorrow. Tuesday was very instructive as my first time. But there were also 200+ other newbies so I didn't feel out of place.

Got empanelled for a Supreme Court trial (GBH and Manslaughter) and the Judge's Associate felt obliged to call my number out. Approaching the bible, I was 2 steps away when the defence barrister called "Challenge". After hearing the details of the case before being excused, I feel certain I know why I was challenged. Others took it not as well as me (one girl glared at the defence counsel on her way back).

JohnK, can't make it tonight as I need to be home to look after Charlotte, as Mrs LW is playing tennis. Alas, she's definitely not old enough to bathe herself, read a book to herself and climb into her cot - but she can eat by herself - that's a start).

NIGELINOZ, that is much too bright and colourful!

Happy Birthday serfty; Bundy Bear, you already got yours yesterday

I'm surprised you married her then.:mrgreen::mrgreen:

(Sorry couldn't resist )

Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Los Angeles...:D
Hmm, then maybe Miami, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, Las Vegas, Orlando... can't I just leave out San Francisco??

52. If you had to live somewhere else in Australia apart from your current city/town of residence, where would that be?

Brisbane - the up-and-coming trendy city. :)

53. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Malay/Singaporean
Rank these cuisines in order from your most favoured to least favoured.

Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Malay/Singaporean, Thai

54. In your opinion, what is the most useful benefit from having status with an airline FFP?

Priority assistance queues/phone numbers when things go wrong

55. Describe the longest transit journey you have ever undertaken which was not a flight (e.g. train trip, bus ride, cruise, etc.)

Road trip last weekend - 1400km over 2.5 days

56. By what means do you normally travel to get to work/uni? And normally, how long would it take (from out of the door to in your office/campus)?

Tram, about 20 mins. Taxi if late (though as I've realised in Brunswick, this doesn't always work with the busy Sydney Rd and Lygon St traffic!).

57. Name up to three full cost (not low cost), non-defunct carriers which you will never consider flying either in the near future or ever. (For a bonus point, give reasons.)

Garuda - safety concerns

Thai on long hauls - i don't appreciate the Russian roulette game with what kind of equipment I'd get

Probably some of the African airlines - again safety

Malaysia Airlines - a great airline in many ways and I've always enjoyed their flights, but I can't credit any of their flights to a decent FFP (*A or OW) - so not flying them unless they join one of the major alliances (preferably OW)

58. Where in the world have never been to before that you would like to go to next?

South America - some serious partying going on there.

59. Money and necessary health reasons aside, would you ever consider going into outer space? Why/Why not?

No what's there to do in space? I'd be so bored. I wouldn't even go to things like safari parks.

60. What is your favourite oneworld, QP or QP-associated Lounge outside Australia?

Probably Cathay's lounges in HKG.
