My logic is the teams placed 4th and 7th are fighting it out for place in grand final while only 1 team of the top 3 will be there. The finals system is a joke.

Isn't the idea for the team that performs the best for the entire season, including finals to be the premiers? The first 4 teams all get a second chance versus elimination each week for the 5th to 8th teams. Teams 1, 2 and 3 only have themselves to blame.

What we should do is have 24 rounds of home and away and then all 16 teams have a chance to play in grand final. Even the last placed team. Makes sense?

So why bother with the home and away season? Just have the final 16 finals series.

You beat me to it. I think this finals setup is the best system ever. It rewards performance in the regular season and during the finals.

Really? Have you checked soccer tables around the world lately? Don't see any finals series there after 38 regular season home and away games.

Was it last year a team with more losses than wins made the finals? Yep. Consistency at it's finest.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry sometimes.

Ordered 2 refurbished computers before I left 2 weeks ago and was told they would be shipped next day. Amex credit card charged full amount the next day.

Computers still not arrived. Asked my brother to call on Friday as I was overseas. They will ship this week. Morons.

Another week without a computer. A phone is definitely not a replacement for a computer.

And there was I thinking that it was a new money saving measure as tow truck drivers get paid less than firies - silly me!

The truck driver delivering the first truck & swapping with another truck is a fire service employee.

In some instances, the truck being replaced has some issue which requires a tow. Not sure if this is the case on this occasion.

The trucks in question are heavy rescue trucks so there might have been more urgency compared to a regular general purpose fire appliance.

Well besides the world cup. But this just supports my point, no need for a home and away series and then all teams in a finals series. Just have the finals series.

Finals series are stupid. Home and away is enough to determine best team. Any team can win 4 games straight. Even one that has lost their past 22 games.

And let's not get into the incompetence of the referees. These people are supposed to be highly paid professionals making simple mistakes.

Only trouble is it is not a full home & away draw in the NRL. I also prefer how the AFL "seem" to just get on with it rather than harp on about refs/umpires (at least in my reading in NSW). The NSW NRL press (paper, radio & tv) just bait the public about refs all week until the next round of whinging is orchestrated

One of the reasons the Refs are such an issue in the NRL is the constant changing of rules. One punch send-offs, but ok to shove someone in the face with an open hand. Mucking around with the "0" tackle and when it applies. No consistency, and just brings the focus back on the Refs.

I have largely given up on the NRL and stick to the A-League. That is another comp where "they just seem to get on with it" as far as refereeing goes. Its never perfect, the refereeing, but rarely does it become the central topic of conversation!

One of the reasons we have finals matches is because they make lots of money for the league.

As for soccer they play in lots of different competitions, not just their league. So in a given season they will play lots of league matches to see if they will their league premiership, and they also play in different competitions, for example the FA Cup in the UK. This means it is possible to win several trophies in a season.

Different strokes for different sports.

You're the one who suggested a home and away series and a final series involving all the teams in the competition.

Btw it is not possible for a team to lose 22 games and still make the current finals series. Now if there was a final series involving all competition teams that might be different, but then it would require winning more that 4 games.

One referee in rugby league can affect the outcome much greater than the 3 or 5 or 7 (or whatever number it is) referee's in afl. Especially with the scoring system being so different, one try can turn a game whereas one goal has less impact when each team has a large number (>10) of scoring opportunities each game.

For example the port hawks game last weekend. 11 minutes from the end the radio commentator said port can't kick the 5 goals needed to win. I see they ended up 3 points behind, less than one goal. So they kicked at least 4 of the 5 goal deficit, not counting any additional scoring from the hawks. There is no way a rugby league team can score 4 tries in 11 minutes.

Nb I was listening on the radio and don't know the progressive score at any point, just drawing a conclusion from that one statement and the final score.

Rough day, my dad called me at work this morning and said "call me an ambulance" They were on site by the time I arrived, helped perform CPR with them, but we lost him. 77 is good innings, but he was still my dad. RIP

I'm so sorry, that must be quite a shock.

That is so sad. Sincere condolences for your loss.

My dad is 76 and I am always fearing I will get a similar call. I should go back home.
