I visited the site of the Twin Towers World Trade Centre memorial this afternoon. Coincidentally it was the same day as the opening of the new '1 World Trade Centre' building. I have to admit it brought a tear to my eye as I sat and contemplated such an enormous loss of life. More than 10% of the casualties were fellow emergency service workers - police, fire and paramedics - going in when everyone else was coming out.
Very sad the Melbourne cup favourite has passed away.
The 2014 Melbourne Cup has taken a tragic turn with Admire Rakti dying and fellow runner Araldo fighting for life.

It's been interesting to follow what various people in my social media circles have been saying about horse racing in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup.
People are entitled to believe in whatever cause they believe in. When they only go on about horse cruelty for the Melbourne Cup & ignore the other races around the country & around the world, it makes it harder for me to take those people seriously. Reading these people, it as though there's only 1 horse race in the world & that's today in Melbourne.
Then the horse died & another one might be in the same situation soon. This ramped up the arguments that the people had with a "told you so" mentality.
Tomorrow that will be forgotten & the racing on the weekend will go ahead as normal & the bandwagoners will focus on something else.
As I've said to certain people before, if I was to get upset about every issue that people on the internet says I should be upset about, I'd be in the corner of a dark room in the fetal position.
I think the dishlickers have an even worse deal than the horses...

Yep. Was going to mention greyhounds too but didn't want to confuse the discussion.
Maybe it's about time people stopped making money out of animal racing
Anyways, I just donated $50 to animal welfare league.
I think you misread those people.
It's not just an issue of the Melbourne cup. I dislike all horse racing, and especially hurdles racing such as at Oakbank in SA. Rodeos. Melbourne cup is simply the spotlight race where media attention is directed. Those people may well protest at all races and I know they protest at rodeos but the media doesn't bother to report it.
This is an interesting article on Equine Frequent Fliers
