Cricket Australia says it will make a "short one line statement with no questions" on Phillip Hughes in 5 minutes #PhillipHughes

"Phillip's condition is unchanged and he remains critical. If there are any further developments we will let you know immediately" CA Update

It appears no real news, still critical.. CA have setup a tribute page

I'm not to sure that the public will hear anything today.
As our resident princess said yesterday it is likely this was due to an Extra Dural haemorrhage. The point of impact is classical for this as is being conscious for a minute or two before collapsing.Often once the blood is removed from around the brain there is a good recovery. As he had emergency treatment with an airway established quickly you would hope he will fit in that category.
Unlikely though he will be able to resume his cricket career.
As it should be we must wait until the family wish to release information.

Appreciate the info from those that know these things, including our resident medico members. Thanks.

The reactions of players leaving the Hospital is not good. I need to be wrong. :(

with respect, they are cricket players leaving the hospital bed of a team-mate who is in an induced coma - I wouldn't expect their reactions to be very good.

I swore that I wouldn't get involved in this discussion, and I hope that I can keep out of it from here on.

Yes, agree. It would be distressing for them.

But I don't see the issue in discussing this. To carry on as if this hasn't happened seems callous if you admire the person. If you aren't interested in cricket then I understand, if you are, then there is no disrespect in commenting, quite the opposite.

Totally agree with you. What seems to be happening now in the limited info being released (CT today etc) seems standard management post-op.
I sincerely hope he fits into the good prognosis category.

I would have thought that it would have been a limited number of family only that could see him & not his team mates.

If I'm in a hospital, I usually walk past the entrance to ICU & spare a thought for the people inside.

I understand the public interest (partly because the media is extensively covering it & it is hard to avoid) but there must be several people with similar injuries that no one knows about.

I like this article: Cricket community calls for calm | cricket.com.au

in particular these comments:

A review of the current helmets is going to be the lesson learned from this experience.

The interesting thing to see is how this will filter down to the lower levels of the game where the money often isn't there to have the best/latest gear.

While the risk could be higher in the elite levels because the ball speeds are higher, players at lower levels may not have the skill & reflexes of an elite player to get out of the way.

I'm not in the least interested in cricket, I guess I should have made that clear, and I'm not really very interested in celebrity. It's awful when somebody has a serious accident at work, and this is how I feel about this issue. I do however understand that there's a passion for sport in Australia and that's why this industrial accident is such big news.

I really feel I should keep right out of any discussion, as I don't have the same feeling for it that many other people do - I'm certainly not criticising those who are upset by this, I'm just trying I guess to explain how I feel.

I understand then badgerboi. People experience all kinds of trauma and distress in their loves and it doesn't get a flicker of attention.

It is the same as when an individual's house burns down for instance; it's just another byline. But if that occurs in the midst of a bushfire then it is likely to receive headlines and all sorts of public donations are raised. Yet the trauma for the individual is the same regardless.

So I do "get" your position.

I do know what it is like to be hit in the face with a cricket ball - not my face but my partners. It wasn't pleasant. But nothing like this of course. It so depends on exactly where the ball strikes.

The comment I responded to said (I think) "the team". If that's the case, then understandable as his workmates they would be upset, but I don't think it's right to read more into it than that.

Again, I'm trying not to be harsh, I'm just having difficulty understanding the depth of feeling involved here.

Thanks Pushka. I'm not trolling or being nasty, and I'm pleased that people such as yourself can see that.

I've given up trying to understand everything that gets posted here. :p

As someone with inside information ;), I am certain that cove does not think that 67 is old.

I can't speak for my old year 3 classmate, but I can verify that I, at least, am not far behind you drron ;).

I think there are a few of us around drron's age. One of my daughters calls me the old boy sometimes.

This sort of thing goes beyond that though, it's the general cult of celebrity that has just passed me by, and I'm genuinely surprised at how big this story is. (I'm more upset by the awful story of the baby who was abandoned down a hole by his mother than this, that's something that is truly sad and awful.)

Same thing happens when I read the "celebrity" thread on AFF - I haven't heard of 90% of the allegedly famous people mentioned there, and of the ones that I do know I probably wouldn't recognise.

Yep, I have to google many of the celebs in that thread and even when I find out who they are, I realise that was 30 seconds of my life wasted.

It is a similar issue when Princess Diana was killed, I was surprised at how bad I felt. Not like I knew her.

I think that the issue with the current cricket story is that many of us have played, or have partners who have played cricket, or who avidly watch the Test and Limited overs cricket, or the State cricket and couldn't imagine that just playing a game like cricket could threaten someone's life. In this case I don't think it is a celebrity thing.
