Passing kidney stones - the only time I've seen my brother is real distress.

Thank you for the support everyone I really needed it Saturday when trying to work out what to do. I went to initial hospital ER and have been here at the Mater since. I have an 8.9mm gallstone in my bile duct trying to get out through a 7mm opening. I am now a strange yellow colour, but my liver is holding up well and so far there is no infection. Any food sets off the pain so I am rapidly losing weight. The procedure (which I can't name) to crush the stone will be at the John Hunter on Wednesday.

This is the first time I've been able to access the internet since admission so may not be a get a signal again.

Thanks again
Fiona

presumably an ERCP - painless and you'll have a lovely sleep then start passing very orange wee (or some other weird colour) and feel so much better. Then you need to get rid of that foul organ---the gall bladder

What purpose does the gallbladder serve? Is it an artefact from a diet of thousands of years ago?

My father had a ruptured gallbladder. He was in a serious way.

These are all over Thailand. There are 3-4 in this street alone in Chiang Mai.

it basically concentrates the bile that the liver constantly makes. when fat comes through the duodenum( just after the stomach) the gall bladder contracts and the bile breaks down the fat to aid in digestion

I had a kidney stone episode 2 years ago. It was one of the most painful experiences I've had. I was given morphine at the local hospital, which greatly helped.

The specialist gave me a script for endone and with a wry smile told me I was going to have the male version of giving birth :|

Thankfully It passed without me feeling anything!

I think others describe that experience as taking your lower lip and stretching it up over your face. :p

I spoke to a fellow patient when I was in the ED with my kidney stones & she said she'd experienced both stones & childbirth. She prefered childbirth.

Coincidence. First heard the term ERCP at work yesterday. Just about to observe a couple.

Are some stones smooth and others - prickly?

Actually I would say definitely smooth and rough and misshapen. I have seen some very large gall stones that do look and feel like rocks - and one patient even had hers made into a necklace ! Kidney stones don't get as large as gall stones but they can be smooth or lumpy too.
