The totally off-topic thread

I've finally got my address book in my Nokia N73 up-to-date (had 1,100 contacts, now pared down to 280).

Now to try and work out how to transfer it to my iPhone (which I got out of it's box for the 2nd time since I bought it 6 months ago).

This is probably a better subject for a new thread :o

If your sim-card has enough free space transfer your contacts from the phone to the sim, although you may lose certain info by doing this.

You're presuming I know how to do even this (probably a simple task to those IT savvy)

I tried to save what I thought was my pared-down address book onto a mini SD card that I bought with the N73. Went to the iPhone, put in the SIM and SD card and found the area where you can transfer it.

Seems it transferred the old listing. Now I have to find out how to delete the address book on the iPhone and try again. Frustratingly, I can't even find an area to do that - surely I don't have to delete one-by-one :o

Needless to say, back to using the N73 until I can find out how to use the iPhone

To be frank, the best IT people discovered how to do things by trial and error, not by RTFM :p We only invented that acronym to stem the production of idiots.

Surely there must be some interface or software that you can use on a PC to link with your iPhone and more easily handle your contacts as required?

Or, there might be an iPhone app that can help you :p

Hmmm....just logged on to check my PC account and it seems I've hit Gold.

Should I expect anything good? (I still have some PC stays coming up.)

I should say, rather oddly enough, I've received quite a few upgrades on check-in even though I was a PC Club on cheapest rate rooms.

Frankly, WTF is RTFM ????????? I'm not about to waste a lot of time with trial and error.

Again, there probably is, but I don't know about it and not about to waste a lot of time looking for it - looks like a trip back to the Optus shop and beg them to do it for me.

Occasionally I'd get given a voucher for a free drink, or vouchers for cheaper breakfast. YMMV

And Lindsay, is resetting the iPhone back to factory defaults an option? That would surely do it

Lindsay; to transfer contacts.

Current sim in N73; go to contacts; and copy contacts to sim card.

Then take out sim card from N73 and put Iphone.

Then copy contacts from sim card to iphone.

Last week brought 3 new phones for work, I did that with old Nokia 6210 to new E51.

When I went from N73 to Iphone I decided to start again with my contacts, first wrote them to a note pad, got to love pen and paper.

Keep in mind that when putting across to a SIM card, it will only store one number per contact. So if some contacts have 2 numbers e.g. you've given their home/office number, and mobile, plus e-mail even; then you will see some interesting results

Nokia 6110 Navigator for me,has everything I need, bluetooth, camera, office applications and free GPS unlike the 6210 Navigator where you have to pay for GPS access.
Picked it up on Ebay for $100.00 because the previous owner couldn't get the GPS to work,I formatted the memory card, updated the software version and reinstalled everything and presto,a phone which still retails for about $250.00 for $100.00.:D:D

This is why I didn't immediately shine well to throwing my SIM into my N73. Since the N73 basically enforces the use of its internal contact system rather than allowing direct reading from the SIM card, everything is "messy":
  • By default, SIM contacts only have one name field. N73 solves this by making the "SIM name" the "Last Name"
  • As Flashware said, SIM contacts can only have one number per entry; N73 can have multiple entries (apart from address, birthdays, what is their favourite colour, etc. etc.)
I still haven't cleaned up my N73 contact list, for that matter....

My original solution would have been use Nokia PC Suite to export the N73 contacts into a CSV, re-map the fields if necessary, find software to link to iPhone, re-import to iPhone and voila. In English, that is
Code:
ERROR! Divide by zero.
:p

OK I'll be good now. Hope you work it out Lindsay, or find someone reliable to do it for you.

Read The cough* Manual ?
If all else fails read the instructions.
But IT instructions are written by IT geeks so no use to the rest of humantity.

Them or the same robot that is used to produce English menus for restaurants in China.

Buying unique IT components such as a USB Simcard reader, which is often developed and produced in China, Taiwan, etc. also provides for some interesting manual reading

Not just IT components either,I bought an espresso coffee maker on my last trip to Hong Kong and when I got it home I started to read the manual and was struck by the line "Remember to reinvigorate the resins on a regular basis":!:
I still haven't worked that one out. although I think it's something to do with cleaning out the coffee residue.

Oh you mean "free" as in "download your FREE printer driver here" on a website you go to when you lose the driver cd that came with your very expensive laser printer which the manufacturer no longer supports?.
You then spend half an hour reading advertisements before the website gives you a download link which asks for $5.00 for the driver.
