The totally off-topic thread

Normally totally clueless about IT - but I managed to follow a set of what seemed like rather complex instructions and hacked into my new DVD player to change the region settings the other day. I didn't realise it wasn't region-free until my new Entourage DVDs bought in the US wouldn't play. Felt like I'd accomplished something big.

Lindsay, is resetting the iPhone back to factory defaults an option? That would surely do it
It's an option...so is throwing the iPhone out of my first floow window at the moment. It's not bloody (simple) user friendly.
Lindsay; to transfer contacts.
Current sim in N73; go to contacts; and copy contacts to sim card.
That only transfers one entry at a time, doesn't it (well that's what it is doing for me). With 278 contacts, that'll take way too long for me to do...
Then take out sim card from N73 and put Iphone.
Then copy contacts from sim card to iphone.
That is the hope
When I went from N73 to Iphone I decided to start again with my contacts, first wrote them to a note pad, got to love pen and paper.
I hope you don't mean a paper note pad ;), but rather the computer based note pad

Take that Apple!

To be fair, doesn't Apple boast that their products are pretty resilient? I mean, I've dropped my iPod nano 3G quite a few times from a distance of 1 m, and it still seems to work. OK, it does have a tough plastic protective case around it......the case does have a few dents and scratches in it....

You're presuming I know how to do even this (probably a simple task to those IT savvy)

I tried to save what I thought was my pared-down address book onto a mini SD card that I bought with the N73. Went to the iPhone, put in the SIM and SD card and found the area where you can transfer it.

Seems it transferred the old listing. Now I have to find out how to delete the address book on the iPhone and try again. Frustratingly, I can't even find an area to do that - surely I don't have to delete one-by-one :o

Needless to say, back to using the N73 until I can find out how to use the iPhone
Mr Wilson can I suggest you have a look here.
How to delete all contacts from IPHONE at once - iPhone Forums

If you really don't want the iphone I am sure I could find someone who wants it; as long as its unlocked or locked to the Telstra network.

NIGELINOZ, thanks (but why so formal :?: ). Now that would be handy if I only knew what the hell they were talking about in the first couple of posts. The pthawley post made some sense to me, but my iTunes isn't enabled yet.

Looks like I'll be simply deleting unwanted entries and altering the ones I want to keep (plus looking at the ring tones again)...I suppose this way I'll get to know the phone a little better.

IainF, calling IainF.... :oops::lol:

Though Lindsay is about 5 years younger than Mr Wilson of DTM fame.

Are you crazy?

At least 5 years younger!

Plus his first name isn't George...although I guess that's something LW might have to be prepared to hear when mini-LW starts primary school and the kids come over for birthday parties.

NIGELINOZ, that might be easy to the initiated - but I am a simple soul. I use Outlook but already have an address book operative. Not about to start transferring another and have me (an unitiated) delete the wrong one. Too much could go pear shaped.

As for the George Wilson quip, my nephew already gets that at school (he's in Year 12 and yes his name is George).

Am reasonably certain that you can sync with contacts in a Google account as well.
With anything Apple, you have to do things The Apple Way :p - so you'll need to choose an app to sync from. Apparently, you can sync with Yahoo! Address Book, Google Contacts, Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), Windows Vista Contacts, or Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 on a PC.

See http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_User_Guide.pdf (page 14) for more info.

FWIW, I've never ever had a problem with iPhone syncing and deleting stuff that it shouldn't. I seem to recall that there's an option in iTunes that will allow you to delete everything on the iPhone before syncing - that may be worth looking at.

One can merge your Contact lists from several sources and rationilze them (deleting duplicates, redundant one etc).

After that you keep them updated in the one central source (e.g. Outlook) and down load them to your 'phone and any other place you need them.

I don't believe it; how can Qantas loose someones bag on a simple Brisbane to Sydney flight, I was surprised when our staff member rang to say Qantas has lost his bag.

It will turn up,

They wish I had booked them on Virgin Blue.

Another reason not to have checked luggage.

Do you mean "lost" as in the bag is MIA or as in they know where it is but it just didn't arrive with the same flight as the pax?

I haven't had bags go MIA before (well, Mum did once and we were travelling together, but she had to bark at MH, not QF). I've had one in the latter case; last MEL-BNE of the day and bag wasn't on my flight; it was located by BNE ground services after I quizzed them that night, loaded on the first MEL-BNE flight the next day with RUSH tags and delivered to work.

Most important thing is to keep bag tags and get a tracker number.

Oh I don't know BB,Rex lost one of my bags on a flight from ABX to SYD last year, they found it a few days later sitting in the baggage room at Merimbula:!:

I have an Ipod touch. I have photos that I loaded onto it, and kept it in sync with my laptop.
My laptop (complete with photo files) suffered an unfortunate incident that in effect killed the hard drive.

The question is, can I take the photos that are on my itouch and put them onto my new laptop? (I guess same applies to songs)

I understand that if I simply try and re-sync with my new laptop that songs and photo files will be wiped.... too many photos/memories will be lost.

PS - let this be a lesson to all, keep a back up of your photo files!
Also, if anyone knows someone, or is able to do hard drive recovery (it makes a clunky noise when I fire it up), please contact me (I am in Mel, but go to BNE and SYD frequently if someone can help me out)

Unfortunately I think you are SOL - if it was a disk based iPod Classic there certainly are applications that can do that, but with the flash memory based Touch and iPhone there's nothing that allows you to do it, AFAIK.
