Unfortunately I think you are SOL - if it was a disk based iPod Classic there certainly are applications that can do that, but with the flash memory based Touch and iPhone there's nothing that allows you to do it, AFAIK.

Thanks for the info.. the best I can hope for now is to find someone that might be able to access my hard drive.

I'm running out of powerboard space - charging up all my stuff for my trip and I've got a DSLR, video camera, iPod, PSP and Japanese cellphone all jammed on there and they still won't fit properly thanks to stupid AC adaptor bricks.

The question is, can I take the photos that are on my itouch and put them onto my new laptop? (I guess same applies to songs)

This link might provide some info, how useful it is though I do not know.

Copy Trans also looks like a very good solution. Free too it appears.

Also remember that iPod often creates optimised versions of photos for the iPod to save space, unless you specifically check a box to use the full size files. So the photos on it might be low resolution anyway.

Generally if the drive has failed recovery is going to be very troublesome. I've been through two such encounters in the past.

But hey, this is a lesson to backup in the future. I've seen 1TB external backup drives for under $150 recently, at place like officeworks or DSE. So go get one and make sure you backup often in the future.

You could try your luck with Anapod Explorer.

Regarding the hard drive, I know of a few places but none are particularly cheap.

Also, if anyone knows someone, or is able to do hard drive recovery (it makes a clunky noise when I fire it up), please contact me (I am in Mel, but go to BNE and SYD frequently if someone can help me out)

Oooohh...that's not good. It sounds like the click of death.

If you still have partial access to your drive (e.g. it reads some of the time), obviously try and move data off it. Sometimes this works better by having a good working machine and hooking up the gimpy drive as a secondary drive (e.g. via a USB cradle designed for external hard drives, or by simply hooking up the drive to the secondary controller if your computer has one. You might need some techie help with this.)

If the drive clicks continuously and is unresponsive, then you're in a bit of trouble. Some people try putting their hard drives in the freezer for a few hours, then plugging it back in and it seems to buy them a bit of precious time to get the important stuff off before it fails again. However, YMMV very much on this one!

If you really, really, really need the data off the drive, you can try and look up the name of a data recovery specialist. These people are supposed to be very good at recovering data from media, no matter what physical or logical state they are in. (Some of these people are trained or enlisted for IT forensic purposes.) Please note though that success is never guaranteed, nor do these people's services come cheap (and that applies even if they cannot recover any, all or the portion of the data that you want most). So this is option is a bottom-of-the-barrel, i.e. you really, really need the data.

You could also consider off-site backups, there's free ones such as Mozy (hosted overseas); or paid ones (locally hosted in Australia) also, depending on what your requirements are.

I could be wrong, but I think people used to say to put the hard drive in the freezer overnight.. ???

Yeah, that can work - make sure you put it in a freezer bag or similar to ensure that it doesn't get ice inside it.

I've tried it before with limited success, but it can work...

Mal.

Yay, I got my first call from a recruiter actually interested in me!

(with the UK job market the way it is, that is pretty rare!).

Time will tell if the employer is actually interested in me or not, and whether the recruiter actually puts forward my CV.

The pay for the role is bad (compared to my $A rate!) , and really involves a step back in my career, but I need a footstep into the UK so am interested.

Makes me happy though that finally a recruiter returns my calls!

There was a discussion on FlyerTalk about going to LON via JNB rather than on the Kangaroo route or Transpac, i.e. SYD-JNB on QF, then JNB-LHR on BA.

Just for fun, I tried looking up F seats for BNE-SYD-JNB-LHR-FRA around the beginning of November this year, which is when I have my existing booking (BNE-SYD-BKK-LHR-FRA).

It surprised me quite a bit that there are still seats left! Not on the exact dates I would want if I was booking the award for the same time as my existing booking, but the availability is certainly there!

Very big surprise on a route I had thought was touted on having very scarce availability in premium classes, even in cash inventory...

Good luck Mal. Once you have your foot in the door it won't be long before you get back to the heights achieved here in Australia....
