Yup. Didn't even ask as I knew it was a KC. The guy serving me simply said, because there isn't a QP here, we'll give you this voucher for food and beverage at the bar round the corner.

Nice! Always better when they do as they are supposed to be, instead of relying on you to ask them (cheaper for them that way). When PER Int was being renovated, it wasn't until I asked that I was given vouchers for alcohol (as they had just moved into the newly renovated QP but the "liquor license" hadn't yet been sorted).

How did I know they weren't forthcoming? Well, all the people I was talking to out in the public bar ..... were in fact from the QP and weren't too impressed when I told them I was drinking with vouchers the QP had given me! Needless to say they then went back and got themselves some vouchers also

Wednesday 12 August is a show day holiday in Brisbane, nice to be able to sleep in for a bit.

We used to have a show day holiday...someone called Jeff pinched it!
To be pedantic, there was an official ½ day "Show Day" and an official ½ day "Cup Day". "Show Day" bit the dust and "Cup Day" became a full day.

[pedant disclaimer]
The reality was that many would take both full days off anyway ...

Some of us are working in Brisbane on the Show Day...because I don't see the Show as value for money (haven't been for 25 years for the rides and showbags, only been a couple of times ~15 years ago for a drink with friends at the Cattleman's Bar).

It would be nice to actually get the show day holiday once in a while. I seem to never be in Brisbane during this week. So currently a regular work day here in Hong Kong, which means at least 13 hours of work today .

We do have cup day still... the Peoples Republic of Victoria will never release that one methinks - The State of Banana is difficult - if you are living in say Cleveland - you are technically not entitled to BNE showday as you are in a different shire - redland I think...

Mr!

Mr!

The show day for the Redlands and a few other outlying areas of Brisbane is on Monday.

Currently finishing off my trip report from last year; 4000 words and counting.

Hmm, well I've just had a great LHR-BKK sector. My Ashes tickets turned out to be a great purchase for reasons I'm not going into at the moment.

Now for the BKK-SYD sector. Will it be as good?

Oh, and also may have another interview lined up for Monday. This role is much more suited to my skillsets, and pays about the right rate for what I'm looking for in London. Only issue is that it would have a ~1.5 hour commute each way to my place. BTW, for those who are familiar with London, I'm living in NW2 (Zone 2 tube), so I'm hardly a huge distance from the heart of London!

Not my recollection at all. My understanding was full day holiday for all (in MEL metro area). Happy to be shown wrong...(ok, not happy to be shown wrong, but will accept with good grace :) )

Maybe you have only lived in Melbourne for 35 years(I could be out by a few years), maybe Serfty has lived there longer.

Maybe you got an upgrade; to either Premium Economy or even business. Nice one if you did. :D

My recollection as well.

I remember on those respective Thursday and Tuesday's shops closing at Midday and going to school in the morning but being let out at 12:00pm.

Were you in the metropolitan area or a country area?

Wasn't till I was actually retrenched from my job that I got to have them off having worked them both every year, indeed it was a very busy time in that role.

All I am going to say is that after some research found Melbourne Cup changed from a half day to a full day holiday in 1877 :)

All I am going to say is supermarkets etc did close at Noon on Cup day until sometime last decade.

You may have hit the nail on the head there Hvr! Country vs. Metro...I also lived in the country at one stage as a young schoolkid and we did not have Melbourne Cup Day or Melbourne Show Day off, but had a half day for the local racing Cup Day, and cannot recall what for the local show day. Perhaps areas close to Melbourne Metro went halfway.

I also slept in and then went to work. No point in me having a holiday mid-week in Brisbane. I will be taking the time off in lieu on my upcoming overseas trip....

Being a couple days behind and seeing the LA TT flight discussion.....

How many hours would I need to allow for a SYD-PER connection on arrival on LA..... separate ticket and allowing for possible LA delays.... Or just go whole hog and plan to ask the travel insurance company to cover the misconnect....

Oh yes LA N class does credit full miles to AA:mrgreen: (unlike QF fare classes below K) and the Biz seat on LA AKL-SYD is about twice the price of the Y one.....

Happy wandering

Fred
