Anyone remember a service station that pumps your fuel and while that is happening checks your tyre pressure, oil level, brake fluid level and washes all your windows and wing mirrors?
Yes our local does all that in California and Mrscove is impressed. You pay a bit extra for the fuel.

Still available in my town-Wauchope NSW

I worked at one. My first job. And it was great to have more customer interaction than simply standing behind the counter (and steel bars these days).

It was suggested to me (years later) that fuel companies stopped full service because they wanted customers to browse the 'store' and pay huge markups.

I recall years ago we went to a servo (on the Mornington Peninsula) to check the tyres and had to put in a coin! Two days later we watched the first 'Back to the Future' film and cracked up when one of the earliest scenes showed four chaps in uniform (remember the Caltex people wore them) lined up to snappily attend to the customer, one for petrol, one for the tyres, one for the windscreen and one to check the oil. Don't think I've checked the oil since actually

Next thing I do is I put the higher grade fuel into my hire car in America just to have the hope of getting extra power to get past any dangerous situations. Had to go ninety to keep up with the traffic flow when driving to Las Vegas last month going downhill.

In S America it is usual practice that attendants pump fuel - and often offer to check other things.

Yep, I remember the Golden Fleece servo on Bulcock St Couloundra well.

As I remember, by law in Oregon since 1951, self-serve petrol is not permitted. LOTFAP!

Contrast with BC and some US Sates where you have to pre-pay (by law)! O/S cards inevitably mean a visit to pay at the counter and then there's not much chance of getting them out from behind the counter to fill 'er up!

I remember them fondly.

The one close to my [current] house in Melbourne closed down about 15-20 years ago, and has since been turned into an apartment block which is now dated.

As a side note, do any Melbournians remember the former Toorak Gas Company?

I remember ages ago when a couple of gay guys took it over and they would give ridiculous service. You were practically being given Champagne and Caviar while your car was refueled and "serviced".

How times change... Now when you fill up it's all about price, and you're lucky if the "console operator" can speak five words over the course of the transaction to pay for your fuel.

Looking for any general suggestions for relatively secure (think term deposit) accounts to achieve some income from a few tens of thousands of $$.

not investment advice. Just some ideas to research further.

And that's why Woolworths Petrol disabled the pay-with-card-at-the-pump facility earlier this year. They wanted customers to walk past the lollies and chips on the way to the cash register. Pathetic - I liked the pump-pay system.

so QF shares don't do it for you? :)

We're not that reactive. Besides missing the boat when the share were $1. ;)

Currently looking to term deposits as a short term measure. But need some ideas for other things.

I'm considering formally asking one AFF member who does that sort of thing, IRL.

and tips as well?

In old days, battery had to be checked with distilled water top up, if required.

I remember 5 years ago in Tassie.... Hire car... Full service... Jumped out of car thought they were fiddling with the fuel cap... Out was their policy to supply service but I think they wanted full tank
