The totally off-topic thread

Chatted with a cardiologist last year who was a high activity level runner. They were perturbed to have just read a paper that said low to moderate activity running was more beneficial that high activity running.

Apart from possible adverse effect on heart high activity running may cause problems to joints from impact.

I think its not appropriate re Tara Brown as she has a young family. But I also have no sympathy. I think that channel 9 has confused a media programme with reality tv. Its an awful outcome and hopefully others rethink their strategies to get the viewer ratings. Journalism has gone down the toilet in favour of ratings.

I heard they actually paid the company for the extraction?

Nor do I have sympathy for her and the alleged criminals involved. Nor do I believe that her child status should have any bearing on her punishment if found guilty.

If she was truly concerned about her children then surely she would've considered whether or not her actions would harm them prior to agreeing to participate.

No. Agree hvr. I do feel sorry for the child though. Not her personally.

From a recent Brisbane Times article:

Judge Debra Mullins said she had no doubt Michael Smith regretted his actions, particularly given he needed to act as a carer for his sick wife.

"It is too late to worry about those whom you love when it comes to being sentenced," she said.

"You need to think about that when you engage in the criminal activity."

From a recent Brisbane Times article:

Yes. Agree. Parenting and being a responsible partner is way more than 'marrying' and bringing a child into the world and it should pretty much dictate your behaviour from then on.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I am not going to debate with you whether what the mother did is right or wrong. I would do the same thing faced in the same situation so don't need someone else's point of view or lecture. The law is irresponsible.

Let's not forget the father actually kidnapped the kids in the first place. True?

I dont think their story is as black and white as that JohnK. I understand the mother organised new passports for their children to go to Lebanon. She had originally been worried about their safety and had destroyed them. What changed? Safety was still at risk.

He didnt kidnap them. Mother sent them to Lebanon. Lebanon is not a party to our Child Protection Laws.

I fully understand the mother doing what she did. That isnt the issue though, it is Channel 9's involvement.

Sorry to disagree with you JohnK but if you go to a foreign country and commit offenses including assault and abduction, then you deserve to face the full penalties of the law in that country as well. One can perhaps understand the actions of mother, even though she has a new husband and child, but not the others. They should go away for a good period of time, IMHO. Of course one would think the CH9 people will get away with it after Foreign Affairs gets involved. The "mercenaries" not I hope.

Not being a cardiologist the details went over my head a bit. But ISTR that the issue was reduced life expectancy, so I'm guessing heart problems.

I think I've mentioned a few times that I would like heart problems over the other possibilities. At least then I'll be looked after by people who take care of themselves. ;)

Refusing to return someone is equivalent to kidnapping. Applicability of the law is irrelevant to basic ethical and moral conduct.

I agree that this isn't black and white. Hence why I can't believe all the white knights who can condemn one side over the other.

The reports this morning that the judge had told the parents to sort out their [instead words meaning solid waste from mammalian life forms] out were interesting and telling.

As an aside this is a topic, can these posts be moved? Also can any of my posts that end up being moved be deleted? I don't want to be associated with the unreasonable rantings against either side of this domestic problem.

Not having a good run to put it mildly. My dads twin brother just announced he has got (metastatic) terminal cancer and given us chapter and verse (report/results on his scan) - non operable and has probably has 12 months (6 months before he will need palliative care). Looks like I'll be making plenty of trips to Noosa over the next year. Anybody an oncologist here who can explain (off-line) the report?

Bloody hell, I HATE CANCER :evil::evil::evil::evil:

Both parents are wrong - both are using their children as pawns and chattels. Father takes their kids away from their mother and the mother attempts to do the same.

Obviously the interest of the child is paramount but both parents are putting their own interests first.

And Channel 9 - they are just out to get a story. Well they now have one. I hope they can get out early but I hope they would take a step back and understand their lack of insight and stupidity and get off their high horse for once and be a journalist of substance for once.
