The totally off-topic thread

News from home is that the youngest caught a pokemon in our backyard. Considering that wifi is the limit of her mobile internet access the game is probably pretty limited for her. At 12 I don't think she's on tinder yet.

His dad is 3 times his age when JohnK was born. So if he was 25 when JohnK was born, then yes.

At risk of being sent to the maths thread. The only time a parent can be twice the age of their child is when the child reaches the age of the parent when the child was born.

If the age of the father when child is born is X. Then the child is 0 years old when father is X. When the child becomes X age then the father is X+X, i.e. child half the age of father. When the child gets to X+X then the father is X+X+X years old.

Another 7 years till I reach my fathers age when I was born. Virtually no chance of my father being alive if I reach his age when my mine is half his. Would have to be a world record if he does make it.

The Pokemon go craze is getting a bit out of hand. Reading reports of some park in Sydney where people are hanging out all night playing. Plus the museum at Auschwitz has pokestops in the museum. Might have been photoshopped but allegedly someone found a gas pokemon at Auschwitz.

What is it people using Disabled parking when they don't have a permit? I and another car that had Disabled permits couldn't park in a Disabled spot because some bloody tradie was parked getting his lunch.

I caught my first pokemon today. Can see why it is addictive. And being school holidays there are packs of giggling teenagers everywhere hunting them down.
There will be tears.

The one good thing about pokemon go - you actually need to walk in order to play it. So it gets people off the couch.

There are definitely some benefits (increased movement - walking, etc).

I do worry about [young] people wandering around with little to no situational awareness. That is dangerous on several fronts.

Also, it is my understanding that you are sharing a heap of data with the game maker which may have privacy implications, as well as chewing mobile data.

Pokemon will chew through data - that's for sure as it constantly pings 'location'. Its only been out a few days but give it a couple of weeks when the parents get the bills for excess data usage. More tears!
But it is quite an amazing and clever game as it has pictures of places nearby where pokemons are waiting. It uses the phone camera. My first one appeared on the table at a cafe. So you see the real table, the sugar stand and the creature. I really understand the craze. :o

And I am packing to go to Melbourne tomorrow

And yes this could go in the Moggie thread but its about travel. Or - is that too Off Topic?

So there there.

If it's true that can't be good.

It's the old unintended consequences thing. Sometimes it's impossible to plan for things like this because people are not thinking of every single possible case. Whether a company decides to take that risk and their protocols for dealing with it when it happens is crucial.

This is why other contentious places like close to military installations, airports, even popular attractions (like Disneyland etc.)...

Did you take a photo of the vehicle and its registration?

What is the penalty for parking in a disabled spot without a permit? If there is no legal penalty or such, I can see why the tradie, or many people for that matter, are not going to care.

I guess you had the right to kick or key the tradie's vehicle. Just kidding.

I dunno - friend was telling me the other night he and flatmate decided to go cruisin' to catch Pokemon, i.e. driving.

It gets them out of the house - yes. I guess one could argue that has to be a good consequence in the most part.

The guy was still in the car waiting for his mate to come back. Told him off and took photos. Not sure who to contact as the car park is part of a shopping centre.

Just annoying because there were parks about 100 metres away but the bloke choose the disabled spot because he was too lazy.

I think privately owned parking can still be marked as disabled if desired, and regulation can still be enforced by the competent authority as if that authority were the direct owner of the parking area. Might be slightly different from state to state, or even city / council to city / council.

You could contact the shopping centre management and they may point you to the competent authority, which may either be the council or the state.

Or, I guess you could just name and shame by putting it up on social media, if you're brave enough.

I was thinking about putting it on reddit...

One other possible option may also be sending a copy of the photo to the employer (if applicable).

Of course, there might be a chance that the employer doesn't care two hoots about the "infringement" either, even if you mention that the details have been passed onto the competent authorities.

Good idea. I once rang a (landline) number on the back of a van that drove dangerously through a shopping centre carpark. The owner/manager was very keen to hear what I had to say.

I reckon the staff member will get a serve, even if it is just to stop the owner getting phone calls.
