The totally off-topic thread

Speaking of which, when I grow up, I want to move to a winery... I am not convinced it would be sound business decision to own a winery, but surely I could get a cottage for a song and just drink all the stock?

In the early 2000s I met up with an ex-researcher who had come from a top 5 Pharma from overseas - I learnt a lot about Statins and what was in the public domain and what was not. Some predictions were made about what MAY come out in the next two or three years given what that person knew.

Also something I uncovered (personally) unfortunately is a drug being used in estimated 80%+ of all nursing homes/retirement homes in Australia is a drug ONLY LICENSED for use for teenage psychotics by the FDA. Johnson & Johnson marketed in the US (and worldwide) for use by elderly - or rather use ON elderly to boost their profits as the teenage psychotic market was simply not big enough.

These drugs are more or less banned for use on elderly or high blood pressure or stroke survivors etc overseas. Many hundreds of millions in fines later and criminal cases in the US - they are used everyday in Australia - RIGHT NOW.

Unfortunately too many people want to believe that all doctors really know or care what they are doing. The reality unfortunately is different.

Just as I recommend when ringing a call centre - when dealing with the medical fraternity - take a notebook, date, time, name and write down whatever you think is relevant. Makes a big difference to the degree of care that ends up being taken.

My problem, unfortunately, was not knowing every question to ask.

.

Your first point is an anecdote which nobody can confirm or refute.
There are many lawsuits settled in the US by various companies including but not limited to drug companies. I think this may have a lot more to do with the nature of litigation in the US than veracity of all of the claims.

Your second point is incorrect. Risperidone is used in the UK for aggression in Alzheimer's disease.
The FDA has issued Black Box warnings in the past for other drugs which have been at best contentious eg. Droperidol.

As someone in the "medical fraternity" I can assure you that the vast majority of us are there to treat our patients to the best of our ability.
Whilst I openly encourage my patients and carers to ask questions, the care I give is the same regardless of whatever information is taken down.

I'm truly sorry that you have experienced difficulties obtaining good care for your mother. IIRC you have previously written about these experiences here.

If you drank all the stock ... you wouldn't be singing for very long.

Due to work stress I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol when I was in my early 50's. My GP put me on a statin which had some side affects so changed to another one (caduet)

This brought my BP and cholesterol down to acceptable levels. I have been taking this statin drug daily for more than 20 years and last week my BP was 128/79.

I am aware of the issues some people have with statins but they work for me and I will continue to take them.

I started work in Sydney with CSR in 1963 at 750 pounds per annum payable monthly in arrears.

BP is interesting. How can they isolate work as the cause? I've had it since my thirties.

I think work stress can be a bit of a furphy for BP. Genetics play a much more important role IMO.

Yes. Agree. And possibly ageing process and lifestyle. I'm surprised when older people dont have it. I thought it came with the territory.

And speaking of dogs, how is Miss Daisy going, BC? Still got you wrapped round her little paw?

She's good. Going through that toddler stage of testing boundaries  But started practicing how to sit yesterday, which is going ok except that its far too exciting to sit still for more than a second.

While it is lovely to see them growing up and learning new skills, wouldn't it be great to just retain their puppy/kitten faces?

Actually, that statement applies to babies too.

Ooh, I like this TomCat! Great idea.

Sure would. She's quite a cutey and a good size to carry around at the moment.

Thank you for the photos and stories blackcat20. I love dogs and hope our family will have one someday. I grew up with a dog and got to enjoy other peoples dogs as well but for various reasons we don't have one yet.

Does anyone use an RFID blocking device for their cards ? Something like this =

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-...ection/648142/

I have been tossing up whether we should get these !

I did post this on the "thefts, pickpockets, security and general safety" thread but didn't get any answers, so trying here :D

I havent but the current tap-pay system totally bothers me! Great convenience, great risk.

I have used the little sleeves to put my CCs and passport in, but nothing as sophisticated as a jammer.

Ditto...........

I purchased one of these blocking devices before a trip to the US and China late last year - made me feel better if nothing else and I love toys

I am sure they work, but unsure if they are really needed...

I had a store credit expiring and thought it better used for one of these than lost
