The totally off-topic thread

So, I guess it's check the cheque mate. :D

Trust you to cheque in to this chequered topic. :o

But on that note, I can't remember the last time I've seen a cheque, except for ceremonial purposes with the big novelty sized ones, lottery wins or any time that you get paid off by a large corporation (e.g. compensation).

We were taught in high school Business Principles & Practices class that, except for petty cash, all business expenses are paid by cheque, which means that the cheque number can always be used as the folio reference. Of course, we were also taught how to correctly fill out a cheque, including drawing the line to fill up any blank space on the fields; we were also taught what the meanings of all of the different possible crossings were, but in the end people really only used two kinds of "crossings" - open bearer (i.e. no crossing, "or bearer" left untouched, usually made out to Cash), or not negotiable.

You'd be lucky to be able to find a retailer that will accept over the counter payment in cheque these days, let alone a cheque not directly made out to them.

As far as moving posts goes, not only is that something only a mod can do, but logistically it probably works out easier for them to create the target thread in the first place rather than moving and merging, which might do something odd to the sequencing.

All this starts with either a mod noticing or a post report. I think the mods haven't been as fast off the mark in moving subthreads off TOTT into new threads, compared to before (splitting off maths, grammar, cats and household appliances).

The main headache will be for a mod to extract only the relevant, related posts; for medical, that's very broad, and has posts spanning back months (not the same subthreads, but certainly medical related).

There is nothing to stop someone starting their own thread. Merging is not going to be an issue - incase you haven't noticed each post has a date and time.

Post report is interesting comment. Personally I would've thought that the person who WANTS a thread would report it and ask for a new thread rather than rudely writing "Oi MODS".

And given the number of posts in this topic, I am certain the mods would CAREFULLY consider the consequences...
But then, will the topic be subject to the curse of 65535 (hint: JohnK amongst others should be able to explain.

Happy (mathematical) wandering

Fred

Yeah, I reflect on the number of posts. At least 3 times separate threads have been create when I post twice on a subject. But we've suffered numerous posts in TOTT on the topic of one person's medical problems.

Seriously medhead, if you are going to call my post rude then quote it when doing so.

I think the mods know (or maybe I presume too much) that my post was meant to be light hearted and a cryptic apology in taking the off topic thread to be way too health related. But so far you seem to be the only person offended. Sorry for sharing too much. Please put me on 'ignore' and save us both the angst. I've enough to deal with right now.

Good news and bad news for a friend. Good news - courtesy of his partner's work, they received 2 tickets for a table at the Brownlow Medal dinner. So what is the bad news you ask? They will be on a holiday in Bali and cant go. We would cancel the holiday! But then, for the same reason they get sponsor box seats to every AFL grand final so it is probably a bit meh to them.

I suppose the Brownlow dinner is a bit ordinary for some people; not me though! Different people's views of what is important is all part of life's rich tapestry as they say.
I thought you were going to say that they offered the tickets to you :)
No good for me to go....haven't got a thing to wear :)

Actually I read the 'oi mods' as a bit tongue in cheek as the thread seemed to be moving a bit on-topic (medical) :). Others may take a different view I suppose.
Like most threads there are times when one topic seems to predominate then it moves on. This is no different IMO.

Ha - we will be in Bali too. :o. MasterP has asked about it. I think it would be a long night but I am prepared to endure. Our friend is a bit disappointed actually.

That's been done before - Rebecca Judd for example just to name one, but admire two.

I considered the benefits of moving the medical posts in this thread and found the benefits to outweigh the detractions and hopefully no unintended consequences. There was no change in my BP but I did enjoy a cuppa as I did them.

Now please back to more totally off topic talk here...

I am seriously running out of off-topic topics to post.

I found myself counting again. Todays magic number is 14....

Burial or cremation...topic 15.

UNDERTAKER: (Graham Chapman) Morning!
MAN: (John Cleese) Ah, good morning.
UNDERTAKER: What can I do for you, squire?
M: Um, well, I wonder if you can help me. Um, you see, my mother has just died.
U: Ah, well, we can 'elp you. We deal with stiffs.
M: (aghast) What?
U: Well there are three things we can do with your mother. We can burn her, bury her, or dump her.
M: Dump her?
U: Dump her in the Thames.
M: (still aghast) What?
U: Oh, did you like her?
M: Yes!
U: Oh well, we won't dump her, then. Well, what do you think: We can bury her or burn her?

Burial or cremation...topic 15.

My office was just having this conversation as a weekend visit to Costco had coffins.

I know in the US it was stocked but I wonder how the Aust funeral industry feels about a bring your own coffin.
